Itching to code apps
« on: January 21, 2011, 03:25 AM »
Hi Guys,

NANY 2011 is over and next one is after 9 months (to code for). But.. what if I am itching to code new apps before that ?
Is there a way where I can post for new apps and get suggestions ?

Please guide.

Regards,

Anand

Sure. Just code and post~! :D

There's always someone available for feedback.

don't forget we have a whole section of the forum dedicated to people requesting small utilities: The Coding Snacks section.

Also there are many ideas submitted for previous NANYs as well:

Maybe we should bring unused ideas forward? They tend to get lost once the year goes past...

Agreed! I've always wanted a more dedicated "idea bank" area where requests/ideas could be submitted (maybe tagged with "NANY" as appropriate) and stick around persistently, be searchable, etc. If it were done with our existing Redmine system, ideas could even be easily spun out into their own projects, publicly track "percentage complete", that sort of thing. Though that would probably be overkill for most "coding snack" type things.

Maybe not even make it specific to NANY, but to borrow your term, make it an 'Idea Bank'.

Yes, exactly. What I meant when I said "tagged with NANY as appropriate" was that only NANY-related suggestions would be tagged that way, but there would be many more ideas, and even the NANY-tagged ones would still be a part of the greater idea bank.

The only problem with using something like RedMine is that it's probably a bit "dry" and feels more oriented towards tracking issues with existing applications.

I know it also has a wiki, but is there something more GUI-wiki-like out there with perhaps a better focus on the Idea Bank (love that name btw) approach?

Yeah, there are lots of systems that would probably work, and perhaps work better than Redmine. I just liked how easily things could be "promoted" from ideas to fully tracked projects with Redmine. Redmine is actually pretty friendly for a bug tracker too. :D I think with a little tuning, an "ideas" project could be stripped down to be pretty simple and easy to use.

It was difficult to go from link to link to find any idea, which I can fulfill or can try, but managed to make a small list, as below,

bzeng, User-Editable Help Menu
IDEA: Allow input commands to be sent to background windows.
IDEA: Copy and Paste from a txt file to a directory
IDEA: Detect and warn when any key is stuck
IDEA: Gracefully close Firefox on PC exit
IDEA: HTML Mail Merge
IDEA: Insert Anywhere Date and Time utility
IDEA: Make window transparent when moving it.
IDEA: Movie Mode
IDEA: On Screen Button That Sends Keyboard Commands
IDEA: Replacement Power Options applet
IDEA: Shell extension to show total play time of media clips
IDEA: Show App CPU/MEMORY Usage on taskbar button
IDEA: Wireless sensor
IDEA: consolidate multiple IE Windows' tabs to single IE Window
IDEA: drag window to edge automatically resizes it
IDEA: slideshow for toddlers
IDEA: tile open windows for given task in task bar
Idea: Utility to allow user to set delay for AutoHide toolbar activation

Though "User-Editable Help Menu" is also one of my priority, I am hoping Mouser will add similar feature in FARR, very soon, if possible.

It is difficult for me to find out which idea is pending, half done, abandoned or finished (why do you think I made Park Cursor Aside, if I could lift my hand so often ?)

Can we (the coders) have  a better way than this ? JavaJones and wraith808 suggestion may solve to some extent.
