HELP! How do I download a movie file in a swf Flash file?
« on: February 20, 2006, 07:16 AM »
Plse Help!

I'm using URL Snooper to try and download a short movie, the URL it gives me is http://www.dancingonice.com/goodfellas/main.4.swf  How do I get a movie out of that?  And how can I download it?

I've watched it many times online, but want to download it before they take it off their site!

Any help would be gratefully received!

Many Thanks,

Angela

Online flash movies are usually FLV files. After viewing them online you can find a copy in your browser's cache (Temporary Internet Folder). Just go there, copy/move the file or use Skrommel's CacheSort (just be sure to add FLV as filetype in CacheSort.ini).

Anyway, since I was kinda bored at work (ssshh, don't tell), I've leeched all videos and copied the download path from the browser's cache. Just right-click and save as.

To view FLV files you'll need a FLV player. Get one here:

There are also FLV to VIDEO (avi, wmv) converter tools, but I know of no freeware.

Hello I did some research on FLV files, seems videolan player can handle it and to convert using freeware found two programs.
Riva FLV Encoder and SUPER if one fails try the other, not all Flash movies are created the same way.

Media Player Classic will play .swf
http://fileforum.bet..._2000XP/1045531002/1

FLVplayer will play .flv files
http://www.martijnde...e/flv-player-updated

Both are freeware

You can actually configure (in the options tab) url snooper to launch a non-default browser i.e. download manager.
I use Net Transport but i've been hearing good things about gigaget http://www.gigaget.com/,which basically does
the same thing.I highly recommend complimenting urlsnooper with a download manager that can download streams.

I found this posting from a few months ago and tried the programs that are mentioned in it  but as far as I can tell, none of them will allow you to download and save a flash video file running on a website.

Is there is a way to do this?

jdd,
this is one of those cases where it's really far easier than you might think.

an .swf is just a file, the reason its hard to download from your browser is that your browser wants to play it!

so you can use any download manager to download an .swf, for example the now completely free flashget (http://www.flashget.com/en/download.htm).

note you still have to find the url of the swf file, usually easy but if you have trouble, try our own URL Snooper(https://www.donation...rlsnooper/index.html).

Mouser posted while i was editing this but i'll post anyway even if it's redundant :D

This recipe should work, but i'm increasingly running into harder to get to media, and flash seems to be
a good way for people to hide their media

You basically need three things

The finder (finds whats going on in the background when you visit the webpage )<-this is essential to the whole process. The flash file should show up with an extension like,flv.,fla,swf.

Use mousers' url snooper
1)https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/urlsnooper/index.html
Right click the Url you find in Url Snooper

And shove it into the...

The download manager
2) I can't really speak for many other download managers, cause i've only used Net Transport, cause it
handles streams so well, etc. But i think a "plain jane" downloader should work

You should have the file on your hard drive at this point to play...
3)The Player,FLVplayer and Media Player classic as mentioned below should play them.

And if you want to convert, well it's kinda a jungle out there, this is the only freeware i can find for that
http://download.riva...ivaEncoderSetup2.exe

A guide for Riva Encoder
How to convert .flv (flash video) to .avi
http://www.videohelp...archive/t259578.html

Here are some flash utility resources i have in my bookmarks ( i haven't used them, just stuff i've glanced
at and might purchase later on)

Amor SWF to VCD SVCD DVD Creator & Burner
http://www.zealot-soft.com/ <i'm thinking about buying from these guys, there programs look pretty
nifty,though i wish they'd combine their resources into one app,i think it's a sales gimmick,but oh well.

Some stuff over here looks promising

Oh i almost forgot,if your dealing with youtube,google video,etc.

Thanks Mouser and tinyvillager.  I've got some homework ahead of me....I tried downloading some flash with with Flashget but it was not as intuitive as I exepcted it to be.  I guess I'll have to play around with it a little more.

Since I hadn't yet downloaded URL Snooper, maybe it will work better when I've done some snooping.

And finally, I also found the last free version of Net Transport so I'll have to give that a whirl as well.  I'll report back later.

thanks,
jdd

it should be as simple as pasting the url of the .swf file into flashget as a new file to download and saying download.

I've posted an alpha version of a youtube downloader and converter (free for testing).
If you're interested give it a shot - it's nothing fancy at this point and you'll have to download ffmpeg separately.  I provide a link to both on my page below.

Feel free to go here and read more.
http://www.krahne.com

It converts to MOV, AVI, MPG and MP4.

-tinyvillager (March 02, 2006, 05:55 PM)

okay, this is veering off-topic but seeing as I found the info here :)

I managed to find in Opera cache the flash file from this page
http://www.vimeo.com...mbed&sec=1109226 as mentioned by justice in Radiohead Nude - by Epson, Hp, Spectrum & harddrives

as said found in opera cache, without extension so I added that (.swf) and tried it in Media Player classic without success
then I tried VLC Media Player (VLC_Portable_0.8.6h, from portable apps) and it played but the colour is appalling - very dark & very over-saturated

just wondering does anyone have any other player tips ?
Tom

there is a nifty tool by Nirsoft that scans the cache folders of IE & Mozilla and list all the files currently stored in those folders.

MozillaCacheView

I managed to find in Opera cache the flash file ... without extension so I added that (.swf)

- it is a .FLV file, (and is 37½ MB).
RealPlayer 11's download manager will grab it without any problems.

thanks Curt - funny that it worked with the wrong extension :) explains why it didnt work in Media Player Classic though

Lanux -
that sounds good, esp for FF cache where files dont seem to be recognisable
PS/edit
thanks for the player tips in the other thread too

... to try and download a short movie, the URL it gives me is http://www.dancingonice.com/goodfellas/main.4.swf

From where I am situated there is no "www.dancingonice.com" except being redirected to iTV.
And on iTV there is nothing at all, (no videos, that is) because it is all for U.K. citizens only.

iTV.gif

And not one of wr975's many links gave me anything...
