<Yoda> Cheaply forth you must go with spares!

I would have thought:

Cheaply forth you go, spares you have!

But that lacks the sense of urgency that the word must adds, and everything Yoda said was incredibly important... (hehe)

the drama continues...

i'd put in an "offer" on eBay, not realising that if the offer is accepted - i've won the item. i thought it was just an offer - like a suggestion, maybe i'll buy the item, maybe i won't.

so, offer accepted, i've won. i'd changed my mind (a little bit) overnight about whether i wanted to spend £750 on a tablet. but the decision has been made for me; my gmail inbox says so - the tablet is mine. so i've paid.

this is what's on the way: http://www.motioncom...s/tablet_pc_le17.asp

0048.JPG

if it's better than my Wacom Cintiq 12WX then i'll be happy. if it weighs so much i can't hold it or rest it on my knee then it's back to pencil and paper.

I've always been a pencil & paper fan; then I flush out and digitise my notes when I get back to the office. The LE1700 looks cool, but 3.3lbs?

*Shrug* ...Might not be too bad come to think of it. I've got the sales manager's HP Mini netbook sitting on my desk now, and it's ok at 2.4-2.6-ish. The tablet style will have better balance so it could actually be better.

I really hope so, otherwise it's a pretty pointless device - something i should have thought more about when i was telling myself i must have it.

3.3 isn't so bad in a tablet.  That's actually a *really* good device from what I've read.  My original tablet was a motion, and they do make good tablets.  If it wasn't for the fact that my tablet was an interim solution, I might have gone with that.

Okay, well, fingers crossed then. i'll let everyone know what it's like when it arrives. it could be the device i'd always dreamed of (i've wanted a tablet for years).

I'm very interested to hear your thoughts!  The motion tablets look pretty awesome to me.  Another one I like is the Panasonic toughbook C1, which is a rugged tablet.  It's built very well.

^ That one is a bit on the large side to me.  That let's them stuff a *lot* into it in addition to the ruggedness, but it seems like it would quickly become annoying.

Yeah, but sometimes I don't mind the extra size if it means i get more flexibility.  For example, I LOVE how you can easily slide in an extra battery to get 8-hours on it.

nudone...if i could find a motion tablet like you did for half-price, I'd strongly consider it.

i think there were two available at the time - but it is the UK eBay; so, it's probably not worth the trouble with the shipping.

here's another - cheaper, less RAM: http://cgi.ebay.co.u...;hash=item4aa45980b4

I wouldn't do that one... no OS/Restore CD means a lot of trouble to even get started...

But it does come with a XP license so a normal XP install CD is OK and the drivers are downloadable.

So not having a recovery CD is no great hardship.

A normal XP install cd doesn't install tablet edition... and that's the point of getting a tablet, isn't it?

My bad - I noticed XP had 'Tablet PC' support and didn't realise that there was other tablet apps that were installed.

I did find this however and XP Tablet PC Edition isn't that hard to find on the net since you still get a license for it.

But does a normal XP license (which seems to be what is included) work for tablet edition?  From other tablet sites I've frequented, I seem to remember that it doesn't... and if you install standard XP, you don't get tablet functionality.

Update: That link is pretty cool!  However, you can get a tablet for a little more (from what I found when I was looking) with tablet already installed, making initial setup a bit less intensive.  I think that the older models of motion pcs have reached the wholesale market and you see a lot of these on there stripped down.. many with no HD.

Here's one on eBay that's a *slight* bit more after conversion...

According to the User Manual it came standard with XP Tablet PC Edition - so that is what the COA sticker should be for.

According to the *listing* it comes with a COA for XP Professional.  Again, with those warehouse specials, in a lot of cases they don't have the original license... so they also get a stack of XP COAs to include...  that might not be the case with this one, but...  (given, it does say that it still has it's COA sticker attached, but I wouldn't assume...)

aaaaaaaaargh.

someone has just bought it before me. i give up.

 :'(

Sorry to hear that. I know how you feel. I always lose on bids at eBay. I've tried to get some new camera lenses... No luck. I don't want to pay 75% of the price of a new lense for a used one, so I lose. Maybe it's time to try my luck again...

http://www.auctionsniper.com

It's worked miracles for my percentage of bids won, and also, though I pay for the bid, I end up getting it for a lot less than I would have if I'd ended up in a bidding war.  And you only pay if you win... and it's a small amount.  I sound like a paid endorsement, but I'm not LOL :)

Hmmm... Might be an idea.

A fellow I know wrote this one:

http://www.auctionsentry.com/

He sold it a while back, but he was the first in the market. Do you know how it compares?

I used to use auction sentry, but I jumped ship a little before he did.  The major advantage of AuctionSniper over AuctionSentry is that you don't have to depend on your own hardware/connection.  It also has several tools to allow you to do nifty things like place snipes on a group of auctions and stop after you've won a certain amount, so if you want an item you can find all of the auctions and group them and stop after you've won one or something like that.  Also, it's easier to add auctions in my opinion.  Of course, the downside is that you pay when you win using AuctionSniper, but I've even done such things as bid normally on an item, then snipe it... if I win with my bid, I don't get charged.  I really like it.

I use Gixen because they have both a paid and free service, (which is what I use).

Gixen features:

    No download required!
Gixen automatically places your bids on eBay at the last moment.
Entirely automatic - your computer doesn't have to be on.
Group bidding: first successful snipe cancels all the others.
    Unlimited number of snipes.
Free browser plugins for IE, Firefox and Chrome.
Gixen is provided to you completely free, no catch.
    Gixen is completely secure.
    Gixen is 99.5% reliable.

Gixen Mirror Features:

All the Gixen main service features, plus:

Gixen Mirror is a multi-server, fault-tolerant sniping service, unmatched by any other sniping service or sniping software. Your snipes are sent twice, from two different hosting locations.
No ads in the logged-in area.
Contingency group bidding - first failed bid cancels all the others in a group.
Wider choice of snipe time choices (3,6,8,10,12 and 15 seconds).
Auction end times refreshed hourly, as opposed to daily.
Gixen Desktop Manager - schedule and monitor your snipes from your Windows desktop.
Other small perks provided to Mirror users only, such as CSV export / import and Gixen API.
100% reliable (*). No other sniping service provides this.
Cost of Gixen Mirror is a bargain at $6 a year.

It's quite obvious you're going to have to buy it to put this speculation at an end.....I'd offer to do it but my wife would kill me :P

Hey... I just got an iPad!  My gadget budget is blown for a while...

As for Gixen, thanks for putting me on the track of this.  It looks like a pretty cool site!
