Yea, I won't be getting an iPad anytime soon

I can see the value of the concept, but essentially you're paying a monthly fee ($15-$30) to use it as you would an iPhone.

SOME EARLY REACTIONS:
Walt loves it:
http://mossblog.allt...le-ipad-impressions/

Tim Lee hates it, says Apple wants people to pay for content when marginal cost of copies is zero:
http://timothyblee.com/?p=2169

Newspapers see subscription money from it:
http://www.guardian....ipad-save-newspapers

Myself? I'd rather have a touchbook for half the price and none of the monthly phone/network fees:

More reactions from around the world here:

I can't see the 'netbook killer' concept in this.  If positioned as a e-book reader (with a lower price), then I could see it in that market.  Otherwise, it has all of the disadvantages of a MID and none of the advantages.  No multi-tasking in a device this size?  Yeah.. right.

iPad = Newton for the 21st century

Was the Newton a success?? I heard about it, never saw one, or even any reviews really (ok: I've obviously never looked either...)

I love the graphic btw:

it will be interesting to me to see how well it sells.

i do see the gut-level appeal in a nice touch tablet -- and yet tablets have been around for many years and the practical use for them seems limited.

there are other deal breakers for me -- the lock-in the apple application store is totally unacceptable and alone would make the device something i wouldn't want to get involved in.

plus i'm holding out for a proper full-sized ebook reader with e-ink style display that is easy on the eyes.

I think we are in store for some really brilliant satire making fun of the iPad.  Here's one:

@mouser: ohmygod, that's the funniest mash I've seen of that clip to date.

Alex Balk said:
This is a very rough analogy, but the iPad is a lot like Barack Obama: everyone was able to project their own fantasies and aspirations on a product with which they were mostly unfamiliar, only to sour on it once they realised that it did not live up to their impossible expectations. Only, with the iPad, it took about seven minutes for the disappointment to set in. I think this says something about our accelerated culture or how we confuse hype and excitement for the tangible realities of life. Our ability to trick ourselves into imagining that we'll get exactly what we want is being outpaced by the swiftness of our disgruntled reactions when things don't turn out how we planned.

Not even a good e-reader (you can't transfer your books!); a terrible "computer" if you're expecting that. (And no USB ports, no multitasking, only runs Apple apps and music bought from Apple, etc.) In Jobs' mind, the whole world pays him to even turn a computer on.

I've never been an Apple fan anyway but this iPad sounds horrendous. Besides Tablet PCs have been around for a decade, big wow here comes a crippled one.

not being terribly interested I haven't been following the development, but from what I've seen and heard to sounds like all they've done is produce an iPod (or touch) for the vision impaired

The most interesting thing about Apple's several useless crap is the press. I really wonder what all these journalists get for writing positively about anything starting with "i".

A very expensive, crippled iPhone, right?

couldn't agree more, apple need to get a grip on reality and make something useful, maybe an iCar would be ideal, or an iPlane.

p.s.

I can't wait for Apple to actually try to reinvent the wheel - I'm sure there will lots of ways they can cripple that too.

It is going to be a trendy device for those iClones that need to show everyone they have one.

To save you the time of having to work out what Apple’s iPad doesn’t have, here’s a quick list:

  • No camera/webcam
  • No tethering
  • No voice support
  • No TV subscriptions (widely rumored)
  • No textbooks (again, widely rumored, especially after McGraw’s slip the other day)
  • No background apps
  • No new notifications system
  • No complex multitouch
  • No Adobe Flash support
  • No brand new platform (basically it’s the iPhone OS under the hood)
  • No new take on the tablet UI, no significant on-screen keyboard advances
  • No USB port for device connection, such as flash drives (a problem for road warriors hoping that this will replace a notebook/netbook)
  • While the device is unlocked, the choice of micro SIM limits carriers
  • No pre-orders (yet)
  • And no, it’s not going to be the savior of the newspaper.magazine industry

is the iPad the premature iPril Fool joke for this year?

i hope it dies the slow agonising death it deserves, with all the owners pulling their hair out with frustration when Apple closes the apps store down for it in a years time.

it's another iCube - soon to be erased from memory by all Apple fanboys.

Ouch... that's a bit harsh, isn't it?  I'd hope it gets upgrades soon.. especially for multi-tasking.  It's not a bad device in my book... just not positioned and/or priced correctly, with some addressable shortcomings.
