His name is Hurley, but in this picture with his favorite chew toy, he looks more like Groucho.

That'll be a balm for your pain

It's a good thing to do but often needs outside pressure for it to come about. Glad that it happened for you.

My beautiful new baby has been ripped away from me at 4 1/2 months - she got over wall and was killed by neighbour's dogs..... I am sick with grief!

Thanks guys. We have virtually decided we cannot have another Cat as we are surrounded by big dogs and the stress will be too much! A small dog such as a Yorkie will be much safer and I am home almost 24/7 so it will be well cared for.

So unfair that my pet choice is dictated by my surroundings!

Tinkerbell crept into our hearts from day one and even my Mum is crying... :(

The house is 'empty' without my little 'White tornado'  :'(

My deepest sympathies to you for Tinkerbell, CleverCat. I grew up with cats and dogs, but spent my adult life with cats. If you ever want to try for another kitty, when you put her outside for the first couple weeks -or months-, every time she goes out, put her in an all-wire (maximum x-y-z visibility) cage big enough to take a step inside of; she'll be all ears, eyes, and nose in every direction, but be restricted so she can learn the dangers through her senses before being exposed to or entering into their domain and danger zone, and also orient herself to her own territory. I've done this, so I put great faith in this method. For the road out front, sit beside the cage with a slap stick of two flat thin boards to make an artificial 'bang' when vehicles go past, to startle her and build a healthy mental association-aversion reflex. Again my deepest and most sincere sympathy and condolences. PS - I posted this under the assumption you have a solid 2-meter high fenced back and side yard, and that the neighbor's dogs don't ever run loose; otherwise, all bets are off. BTW, I once had a pint-size kitten leap almost straight up and attain the top of a 2-meter wooden board fence and hook her little paws over the top; hence, the cage training regimen approach, which worked quite well in teaching her to beware of unfamiliar dangers, and not to wander. Another 'feline survival tactic' is to set up many escape routes and narrow access barricades on your property which only a cat should be able to take advantage of; trees, porch crawl spaces, escape holes, and so on.

Sorry for delay in replying but was busy adopting a rescue cat! She was rescued and given to my neighbour's niece who had to re home her after 3 months as her Himalayan was fighting her. Previous owner shaved her and did a hack job....

Meet Isabella Maria Garcinez - a Pedigree Silver Back Chinchilla who doesn't climb trees but offending tree will be drastically trimmed!

holt you are correct - 6 foot concrete wall and a 30 meter driveway to road with 10 foot front gates (This is crime ridden South Africa!) She bolts indoors at any noise...

[/quote]CleverCat, that is an awesome pussycat!  :-* Loved her at first sight! The all-wire cage I used as a 'kitten playpen' to yard train our cat was actually an old chinchilla cage. Big and roomy even for a full size cat, and even more so for a junior.

I just wanted to add another tried and proven method for even the worst dog problem; toss the dog/s treats (from a safe distance) daily, or whenever you see them. Get the owner's permission if you can, or sneak-toss the treats if you must. It is virtually impossible for a dog to eat and bark or bite at the same time. At first, the dog will be suspicious and grudge you an angry bark, but over time, a few days or weeks, he'll change his attitude, and can become much more friendly. The only dogs this may fail with are those little high-strung yappers, or specially trained guard dogs. It may not stop him chasing cats, but his basic disposition will be enormously improved, which is definitely a step in the right direction. I've done this many times.

My friends say she is Royalty!

We don't even see those dogs behind the wall and they live with a cat so the owner was perplexed they would attack...

There are several cats in my household, but the one who declares me as her "person" is Casey. She's a little sweetheart with a soft meow and purr. Her favorite toys are crumpled papers and cardboard boxes. While she usually sleeps with someone else in the evenings, she like sleeping on the cat tree next to my desk while I program.

Sadly, my kitty passed away today. It's only just now hitting me.

He was an angora that I found as a stray sometime in 2001 or so.  I was working a paper route very early (~3am) in a low-income housing complex when I turned a corner and about a dozen kitties scattered.  I made a smooching noise, and the fluffiest white kitten I had ever seen was the only one who turned back.  I gave him a few pets and he followed me around the complex on my route.
casper.jpgShow us a photo of your mutt or other creatures..
I had wrapped up my route and he was still following me, so I took a look at him in the streetlight.  His eyes were crusty, he had some tape on his tail, and the whiskers on the left side of his face had been burned off, probably by some neighborhood kids.  I decided then to take him home and take him to the vet when they opened.  The vet said he was about 4 months old, and had a mild case of distemper.  She gave us some medicine and he became a permanent part of our household since then.  We named him "Casper" cause he was so white.  He had the most loving temperament, always down for a good petting or lap sit, and even when we scolded him, he would just lay over on his side and give us "the look" demanding a kitty massage.
20151223_233731.jpgShow us a photo of your mutt or other creatures..
About 5 or 6 years ago, he developed cataracts and was totally blind within a few months.  That didn't stop him going where he pleased, and he never lost his way around the house and yard.  About 2 months ago, we started noticing him slowing down quite a bit, and losing some strength in his back legs.  He seemed to recover a bit after a week or two, but never got back to full strength.  The vet said he was just getting older and to just keep him comfortable.  As long as he was eating and drinking normally (which he did), he would be fine.  About three weeks ago, it seemed it was all he could do to lay on his bed, eat a teaspoon of food every now and then, and take himself to the litter box.  Eventually, he wouldn't eat more than a bite or two if at all and couldn't make it to the litter box, so we made him a bed out of a foam pad, a plastic bag and a towel.  This morning, my wife called me at work to let me know he had passed.  My son said that around 8am he meowed feebly a few times, then stopped breathing.
I only wish I had been there.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, Edvard.
I lost my cat over a year ago and i still haven't gotten over it.

You gave him a great home and a place to live a full life with people who loved him.. none of us can ask for too much more than that.

That brought tears to my eyes Edvard. 15 years is such a long time (which makes it even harder).
