Firefox --3.5-- Extensions: Your favorite or most useful

The other "Firefox extensions topic" is long and quite old so I figured a new one is in order. But, if the powers that be decide to delete this thread that's no big deal.

Now that I'm back to using Firefox I've realized how much I enjoy tweaking my browser. Here's my list so far...

• Flashblock - I'm sure most of you know about this already, but for those who don't: it blocks flash objects and replaces them with empty boxes with a Play button. Click the Play button to display the flash object. Useful because flash stuff on webpages is often annoying. It also comes with a button that can be added to the toolbar that enables and disables the extension.

• Download Statusbar - Adds a small... uh... status bar to the bottom of firefox for each download. (Similar to what Chrome does, but this was released long before.)

• Findbar Basics - I got this because it makes "Ctrl + F" both open AND close the find bar, it has a couple other features too. - Thanks for the tip Innuendo!
  
  
• Nuke Anything Enhanced (Aardvark looks better, see posts below) - This is mostly for printing, select stuff and "nuke" it, which removes it from the web page. Now when you print you aren't wasting ink on a bunch of ads and junk.

• Close Tab By Double Click - You can normally middle-click to close tabs in Firefox, this lets you close tabs by double clicking, just like in Directory Opus.

I prefer Aardvark, (kudos to Mark0), rather than Nuke Anything Enhanced - saves a lot of right-click menu work which I find always annoying.

And rather than Findbar Basics, I just remove the find qualifier, (usually '/'), so that when I start typing, (outside a text box), it starts searching, then F3 to repeat as necessary - the Find bar disappears after a few seconds of no entry or just hit Escape.

The add-ons that I have normally installed:
Aardvark - Override compatibility and it still works.  Let's you remove whatever you don't want on the page temporarily before printing/saving.
Adblock Plus - Gets rid of ads.
Advanced Dork - Highlight a word and search using Google's advanced operators, eg. intitle, link, movie, etc, etc
BugMeNot - Let's you try and access a site using registration someone else has provided.
CustomizeGoogle - Let's me disappear Google ads except when I don't want to as well as a bit of obfuscation.
Download Statusbar - As per Hirudin's post above.
ErrorZilla Mod - Gives a few more options to a failed page load, (I'll probably replace it with ErrorZilla Plus).
FireFTP - A really excellent FTP client, saves me opening a DOpus lister
Forecastfox - Saves me from opening the blinds to see if it's raining.
Greasemonkey - Can make websites so much more than what they are.  Coupled with Greasefire to make finding scripts easier.
Linkification - Converts text links into clickable links.
Nightly Tester Tools
NoScript - Stop unwanted script/Flash from executing.
Speed Dial - Quick access to your most visited sites.
Tab Mix Plus - Make Tabs work the way you want.  You need to get the latest build from the forum.
TrashMail.net - Create disposable email addresses for websites.

Wow, Aardvark is very, very cool, thanks for suggesting it! I didn't know Nuke Anything had competition. I'll keep both installed, but I have a feeling Aardvark will be the only one I install in the future. The "Kill"/"RIP" feature sounds awesome, have you used it 4wd?

No, I only use Aardvark when I want to print/save specific info from a page otherwise I prefer to see it complete, sans ads of course.

Hirudin already mentioned Findbar Basics which I recommended in the old thread.

I'll re-mention Lazarus, an extension that can save web form data in case something goes wrong in the submission of the data you're not stuck having to type all that crap in again.

Oh, and I've used Download Statusbar for years. It is SO much better than Firefox's built-in download list & has many different ways to customize it.

Firefox does a Google 'I feel lucky' search by default for anything you type in the address bar that isn't an address.

It is not only the "I feel lucky" function. You can set it to display up to 50 results.

Xmarks - Though the amount of memory and processor usage is pretty criminal.
All-in-One Sidebar - Control your sidebar and have everything there instead of popping up in windows.
Compact Menu 2 - Cause Firefox needs less menus.
Evernote Web Clipper - Cause no matter what, Evernote is still cool to me. 
Fast Dial - I know there are other alternative, but it gets the job done
IE Tab - For those times you just have to use IE, but don't want to.
Linkification - Cause everything that looks like a link should be clickable.
OpenBook - Cause I hate the limits of the new bookmark dialog
ReadItLater - Another extension that links to another service- but it makes keeping track of things without cluttering bookmarks a breeze.
Smark Bookmarks Bar - My bookmarks bar has too many entries- this keeps me from having to scroll
Smart Stop/Reload - Why do you need to see both at any time anyway?
Update Notifier - Keeps all of the above in sync

I have others at home I don't have here at work, which is why I should use that one that lets you sync extensions between browsers...

I tried installing it, but it didn't work properly. I don't know if it that's because I'm running over 30 extensions and something is interfering with it or because my Firefox profile is very old being used from Firefox version to Firefox version and from one OS install to the next for many years. I just didn't have the energy to sort it out.

Tab Mix Plus has ALWAYS been a favorite.  I install that even before NoScript (#2), & DownThemAll (#3).  Lastly, I always add IETab for those sites that INSIST that the IE engine is the ONLY one that can render HTML (Stupid sites - don't the webmasters know there are standards for a reason? </rant>)

After that, I usually install, in no particular order:

UnPlugged - a FireFox extention that does more or less the same thing URL Snooper does, but it is dead simple to use.  No configuration, just use it and it either works or doesn't.  When it doesn't, that is where URL Snooper comes in  

ForecastFox or ForecastFox Enhanced (depends on mood at the time) - see above

Flagfox - tells you which country the server serving content appears to be located.

I also have played with, and have on a few installations:

SpeedDial - Open several preset pages at once.

FlashGot - Another download manager I used before DownThemAll.

FEBE - Bookmark synchroniser

Delicious - Online, social bookmarking

Firebug - Website debugger

iMacros - Create macros for Firefox (not as useful to me as first imagined, because there is not that much I do so repetitively).

However, I have come to like Vimperator A LOT, because I also love vim.

Better Privacy and NoScript I use to protect a little more of my privacy (I hope it works).

And because I still haven't found a decent replacement for Google Reader, I use Google Redesigned to do away with the boring default look.

There was some discussion of Last Pass on the earlier FF extensions thread.  That's how I learned about it, I think.  I like it a lot, though I prefer RoboForm on Firefox; I find it's somewhat more easily controllable.  I use Last Pass primarily for Opera, since Opera can't use RoboForm.  Of course, RoboForm costs $$ whereas Last Pass is free.  I suspect that if I didn't already own RoboForm, I might just decide to go with Last Pass for all my browsers.

Don't forget Hyperwords. Just select any text on a webpage and choose from a number of useful searches, translation, conversions, etc! It even makes a handy search bar replacement.
