+ Added option to add a "(1)", "(2)", etc., to the end of duplicate folder
      names.  (Thanks, Kevin H.)
+ Added a note to the help text that if you use Unicode characters in your
text file, to make sure you're saving it in UTF-8 format.
    * Moved the "Send to" menu shortcut creator option from the menu to the
      Options tab.

Hi, zwow, and welcome to the DonationCoder site.  I think your request might be a little out of scope for this app.  However, if you're interested, I can show you how to easily create such a list using my List Numberer application.  You could then paste said list into Text 2 Folders.

Hello,

New to the DonationCoder and to Text 2 Folders here. Like some others, I'm a photographer and creating the same set of folders for each event I shoot is tedious. Using Text 2 Folders, I can create a root folder and have the subfolders I use in an event created, without having to go through one-by-one and type in the names.

I do have a question though: is there any way to create subfolders with the root folder's name as a prefix?

A typical event for me will look like:
Root folder: yyyy_MM_dd-[event type]-[client name]
Sub folders: yyyy_MM_dd-[event type]-[client name]-[image type]

For example:
2014_04_28-wed-smith
   2014_04_28-wed-smith-reject RAW
   2014_04_28-wed-smith-master RAW
   etc.

The only way I have been able to attach the date/event/name prefix is to copy and paste it in to the front of my \[subfolder] in the text file or in the manual entry within Text 2 Folders. Eliminating the copy/paste of the root's name would be a huge time saver.

Thanks in advance! It's wonderful to have a accessible program like this with a responsive community working around it.

Hi, nosch455, and welcome to DonationCoder.   :)

is there any way to create subfolders with the root folder's name as a prefix?

Not currently, no.  However, something like this shouldn't be too hard to add.  Let me see what I can do.

Hey skwire, were you ever able to add in an option for a root folder as a prefix?

Apologies, nosch455, this slipped my mind.  How about if I make it so you could use "$root" as a token to do what you want.  For instance, based on your above example:

Root folder: yyyy_MM_dd-[event type]-[client name]
Sub folders: $root-[image type]

Of course, I would strip the "c:\" portion of the root path.  Would that work for your purposes?

Here's a beta build for your testing:  http://skwire.dcmembers.com/apps/text_2_folders/Text2Folders_.zip

Enable the option in the Options tab.  Also, to keep consistency with the %ts% token, I used %rp% instead of $root.  Please give this a test and let me know if it works how you envisioned.  If it passes muster, I'll promote the build and release it.  Thank you and apologies for the delay.

It's nearly perfect (and already saving me a ton of time). The only thing I would change is, as of right now, using the %rp% token gives the full folder structure, starting at the drive/partition.
For example: my folder structure for a shoot this past weekend goes:
Y:\
   PHOTOS
      2014
         2014_05-May_2014
            2014_05_31-wed-[client name]

Then the various subfolders within the 2014_05_31-wed-[client name] folder. When I use the %rp%, it includes the "PHOTOS"; "2014"; "2014_05-May_2014" bit inside the "2014_05_31-wed-[client name]" folder when I set it to the root. Any way to bypass this? If not, I'm fine with just dragging the newly created folders back into the "2014_05_31-wed-[client name]" folder and deleting the old string. It's still saving me a lot of time by automating it.

Again, thank you so much! this is immensely helpful.

Hello,

i like your app very much. Could you tell me if following customisations would be possible:
- decide in the config file if the button "text file" or the button "manual" should be the standard
- decide in the config file if after starting the app the button create folder is automatically clicked and the app is automatically shut down?
this would help because i have to write the same folder structure again and again!

Maybe this is possible
Thanks!!!!

EDIT: I found the option to add something to the command line
I tried to add this to a link to the .exe and added the root path , a input file and the [-q]

The -q didn't work in that way. And also a problem is the root path: I added the link to the send to and want to ann the structure to the right-clicked folder.
But if i have defined a root folder that dowsn't work!!!

Could you have a look at this?

Just wanted to say that I've been using «Text 2 Folders» on Windows 10 a lot lately, and everything works perfect.

I Want to see if someone might help me sort an UNC issue im having with text2folder.  I have set my batch file to run from the right click windows context menu so I can run it on any folder I want and it works perfect for drives that have drive letters. But gets this type error text2folder error.pngDONE: make folder set out of a txt file when I try to run it on a mounted drive without a drive letter.  It is getting the path and adding its own drive letter but it is adding <> around the path and this is causing text2folder to error out on line#423.

So I need ideas on how to eliminate the <> when the %cd% runs in my batch file.  I have tried Pushd and popd but could not get that work yet either.
Since I am running it as a contextual menu item I have both a registry entry and my batch file and here are both of them

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cadastralfolders]
@="Create Cadastral Folders"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cadastralfolders\command]
@="cmd.exe /s /k pushd \"%V\\\"&call \"\\\\server2\\data structured\\PROJECTS\\CADASTRAL NETWORK\\Text2Folders\\cadastralfolders.bat\" \"%V\" \"exit\""

@echo off
start "" "\\SERVER2\Data Structured\PROJECTS\CADASTRAL NETWORK\Text2Folders\Text2Folders.exe" "%cd%" "\\SERVER2\Data Structured\PROJECTS\CADASTRAL NETWORK\Text2Folders\cadastral folder stucture.txt" -q
exit

I was wondering if it'd be possible to change the folder icon? With custom made icons?

That way when I generate folders I can have each generation to be set as different folder icons... Currently, I am forced to manually change them individually... (win1064bit insider preview)

I am aware that all images would need to either be saved as .ico formats or converted to said format. Hence the request for the feature.

Or better yet add a color option per folder generated. Example #-Z or A-Z if you prefer, A=Blue, B=Green, C=Red etc.   Or 1-12 folders = custom folder font color Blue 13-25 folders = Red, etc...

Just think it'd be a nice feature to add... Lol, well I guess feature's now.

Wondering how to do this:

Set of Folders:
1)   Root Folder
a)   Folder A
b)   Folder B
c)   Folder C

Need to create the following with a wildcard variable:
%RS\*\subfolder 1
%RS\*\subfolder 2
%RS\*\subfolder 3

So it will look like this:
1)   Root Folder
a)   Folder A
i)   Subfolder 1
ii)   Subfolder 2
iii)   Subfolder 3
b)   Folder B
i)   Subfolder 1
ii)   Subfolder 2
iii)   Subfolder 3
c)   Folder C
i)   Subfolder 1
ii)   Subfolder 2
iii)   Subfolder 3

All the subfolders would be the same just need to go into sub-root folder to create them

Hello friend,
Nice app you have there, unfortunately needs an update  :D.
I'm trying to run a bat file to make the folder structure to include also the folder of the  Text2Folders and no luck.
The app is requesting me all the time the root folder.
Until now I managed to generate the folder structure outside the Text2Folders directory but with the ROOT folder there.
So basically what I want to achieve:
Text folder should contain:
1.Folder
2.Folder
3.Folder
....
And after running the bat the end result to be
1.Folder
2.Folder
3.Folder
........
Text2Folders
AND NOT
ROOT\1.Folder
ROOT\2.Folder
ROOT\3.Folder
.....
Text2Folders

So now I'm running the following command line:
start Text2Folders.exe "..\ROOT" "folder_structure.txt" -q

Unfortunately the following code will not work.
start Text2Folders.exe "..\" "folder_structure.txt" -q

Also
As improvement the program should be capabile to accept extra parameters by running in code mode.
For example all the parameters from "config.ini" should be possible to be added in command line. Now you have to run the program
to set the parameters (like open the folder structure after is created) generate the config file and after run the command line.
Also running the program with some parameters will allow you to add "special" things only for that command line run.
Another improvement could be some special characters for adding some comments in the folder_structure.txt, characters that will indicate the software that line is only a commend (all programing software have this feature).
And the last one improvement (to write less text in the folder_structure.txt file) something like the below example.
root\folder_a1\folder_a2\folder_a3\
root\folder_a1\folder_a2\folder_b3\
root\folder_a1\folder_b2\folder_c1\folder_d1
root\folder_a1\folder_b2\folder_c1\folder_d2
To be written like
[root\folder_a1]
    [folder_a2]
         folder_a3
         folder_b3
    [folder_b2\folder_c1]
         folder_d1
         folder_d2
So the square brackets to be heritage for the below text.
Thank you for your time.

Thanks for the feedback.  However, if you're already writing a batch file, why not just create the folders you need directly within the batch file using the "mkdir" command?

This is a great little utility and has been very helpful.
I am creating folders from 2 types of text files. One is set up with returns separating each folder name; the other is a list with commas separating the desired folder names.

For the second type - I have to open as CSV in excel and transpose. Then save and use. It does not take long, but...

It seems like it it would be a easy option to add, as commas are commonly uses as separators. This may be useful to others as well.

 - - -

A note on the send to function in Windows 10 (latest update) it places the path\file name in the root folder not in the text file box. I'm not sure if this really the intended operation. It would be nice if both fields were filled out... or only the text file field.
Now I copy and paste the text; then delete the file name from the root folder field.

Thanks again for the time saving utility - very helpful.
