Great job on this program, mouser.

I have 3 questions about Process Tamer:

1. Do you have any information as to how it will work with Vista? Sorry if you've already posted it, but I can't find anything about this topic.

2. I'd like to include it on all the laptops I service at the college I work for. Is that ok with you?

3. If the answer to #2 above is in the affirmative, can you please include a feature in the next build to hide the icon in the system tray? Perhaps a hot-key combination could open it? That way it would be less likely to be messed with by users who have no business messing with it. (I must allow all users to have administrative privileges.)

Thanks- ssoundman

as for #2 -> i guess i'd consider all schools as in the same class as non-profits and thus free to use all of our software as free site license; you should email me for a site license made out to the college or department with your (or some other support person's) email.

as for #3, i suppose i could add an option for this.

as for #1, i think the current reports i've gotten back are that PT has to be configured (right-click on it and choose properties) to run with administrative priviledges in order for it to do its thing. what i need to do is add code to check for this and report if its not running in such a way on vista, and instruct user how to fix.  and maybe see if i can't get the installer to automatically configure this on install (anyone know code for doing this?).

Just a head's up:  the link to LATEST RELEASE  Download v2.09.01 on
https://www.donation...proctamer/index.html
actually downloads v2.08.01  (as of 21 Aug 2007)
Think you need to update the link on this page (and a number of sites linking via this link, e.g, MajorGeeks.com)

The link on this page, https://www.donation...ftware/releases.html
is OK

Thanks lrlewis, i think it should be fixed now, unless there are some cache issues.

(i recently released updates of most of my software to add update checking options and to make the installer able to shutdown the programs during update and in the process all of the new installers had their names changes and i had to modify all the web pges, etc.)

To all users,

Please post each new BUG REPORT in it's own thread. Do not use this thread for bug reports. You can add them to the Process Tamer forum. After one is posted, we will add it to the Process Tamer - Official Bug Tracking Thread. This will help eliminate the clutter that was the old bug tracking thread.

Thanks for your help!

Josh

1. Could you add in an option, that when a program is at 100% cpu utilization, it activates another program?

The reason why is that when it hits 100% and lowers the thread priority, I would like it to run a shortcut that overclocks my computers, and when the cpu drops to a lower value and the thread returns to its normal level of priority, to run another script to downclock again.  Is this possible.  By the way, thanks so much Mouser for all you have done.

Mouser,

Did you ever get around to adding processor affinity control?

note yet i'm afraid.
not only that but Jeremy seems to have gone ahead and beat me to implementing it on Process Lasso!  Might be worth a try for Process Tamer fans: http://www.bitsum.com/prolasso.php

It took me a while just to get it recompiled with latest compiler, etc. so this is a minor release:

v2.10.01 - 3/27/09 beta
  • Added support for the ConfigDir.ini file (allows setting custom directories for config files; better Vista and portable use).
  • Updated manifests to insist on administrative rights (needed for Vista and later).
  • Fixed issues in vista and with large fonts.
  • Packaged more recent dcuhelper.exe update helper.
  • Changed start-with-windows process to use registry instead of startup group.
  • The programmers who designed Vista should be shot -- they have made it virtually impossible for me to make Process Tamer start with windows.  Vista insists on blocking it at startup.
  • Fixed some hints and tab order in the Configuration dialog.
  • Increased size of Min. Change Interval option.

I'd *really* appreciate a report from existing Process Tamer users to let me know if this version works ok (as well as previous version!), so i can push it out as a public update.

FWIW, I installed 2.10.01 and have been using it for some hours w/o noticing any problems.

I had a recent report from someone that the configuration tool was crashing as soon as it was started.. If this happens you could try the previous version of Process Tamer while i investigate.

Yes, same here. The config window just flashes for a second then disappears. I have gone back to the previous version.

The trick to getting a program to run at startup with Vista is to create a scheduled task for it.

yes, thanks uryan, i should probably add a help item / tutorial for how to do it since it seems to big a pain for me to do it programmatically.

minor bugfix:

v2.11.01 - 4/23/09
  • Live update of cpu usage is disabled while changing rules -- avoids problem where grid updating disrupts the modification of rules.

Can we expect a new version of Process Tamer in the near future?
It's almost a year that no new version has been released.

(I don't have problems with the current version, b.t.w.)

I hope you'll still develop for this program...
It's just awesome how it works! No program can do this, what this can do!!  :)

+ 1 from me.
Yes, it's certainly a very useful and rather nifty proggy.
I don't see anything needing fixing though, and have no major new requirements.
