LATEST RELEASE:

v2.11.01 - 4/23/09
  • Live update of cpu usage is disabled while changing rules -- avoids problem where grid updating disrupts the modification of rules.

v2.10.01 - 3/27/09 beta
  • Added support for the ConfigDir.ini file (allows setting custom directories for config files; better Vista and portable use).
  • Updated manifests to insist on administrative rights (needed for Vista and later).
  • Fixed issues in vista and with large fonts.
  • Packaged more recent dcuhelper.exe update helper.
  • Changed start-with-windows process to use registry instead of startup group.
  • The programmers who designed Vista should be shot -- they have made it virtually impossible for me to make Process Tamer start with windows.  Vista insists on blocking it at startup.
  • Fixed some hints and tab order in the Configuration dialog.
  • Increased size of Min. Change Interval option.

v2.09.01 - 8/18/07
  • Added support for update checking
  • Compiled with manifest to force ProcessTamerTray to run with elevated administrator mode on Microsoft VISTA, which is needed in order to reduce process priorities.

v2.08.01 - 10/08/06
  • Process view now remembers sorting order.
  • Stopped pointless announcing about increasing it's own priority.

OLDER VERSIONS

v2.07.02 - 10/02/06
  • Added advanced killing for processes that resisted termination in the past.

v2.06.01 - 9/18/06
  • Code added to enable Process Tamer to control priorities of stubborn services (for example winlogon.exe, etc).
  • Added tips+troubleshooting help page.

v2.05.02 - 05/11/06
  • [documentation] help file now fully up to date with current pictures and help and tips
  • [new feature] you can now independently turn on/off balloon tray message for taming by cpu use, untaming by cpu usage, and priority adjustment by explicit rules
  • [new feature] foreground process boosting option.
  • [new feature] foreground process protection option.
  • [new feature] option to run PT always at high priority (prevents other apps from being evil)
  • [minor improvement] option to hide < 1% processes now doesn't hide non-normal priorities
  • [cosmetic bugfix] configuration form checkbox was displaying where it should not.

v2.03.01 - 12/22/05
  • [new feature] you can now toggle on/off the taming of processes by cpu use (i.e. only use explicit rules if you prefer)

v2.02.01 - 11/25/05 - Maintenance Release
  • [bugfix] rare bug was causing sequence of error message in the GUI configurator tool if left running for long periods.
  • [bugfix] apps sending timer broadcasts could confused process tamer and cause it to start taming apps prematurely.
  • [new feature] option to automatically remove processes with <1% usage from task monitor after a small delay.
  • this is a minor release but fixes some bugs that i thought should be addressed.

Ok,

Keeping with the new policy, i have released the new version as a beta with both last stable version and current beta available for download.

The new version has some nice features, most of which have been requested by users, including better control over which messages you want to see, and some interesting foreground boosting options (you can choose to always boost the foreground process to high priority, or just to always keep foreground process from being tamed; make a rule to ignore an app if you want to exclude this behavior for a given app).

i've also added an option that lets you tell process tamer itself to always run at high priority which can be useful if you have apps that sometimes uses so much cpu that you can't get control of it (thanks eFotografo for the tip: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3563.0).

Screenshot of new version:
Screenshot - 001 , 11_09_PM , May 09 2006.png

note:
if you check both "boost foreground" and "protect foreground" then you could end up in a very counter-productive situation where the foreground app is out of control and is given HIGH priority instead of being decreased in priority - which would make the situation worse.  Having both checked would really only make sense in some rare cases.  But having only one of these checked will avoid this.

yay! processtamer is back, baby!  ;D
hey mouser, is this version ok to use on dual core/ dual processor systems?
example, I can have a process pegged at "100%" but my cpu having dual cores will only read "50%" load.  does processtamer know about this?  I think this may have been asked before but not sure I recall what your answer was.  Sorry if it's a rehash.

I'm proud to say that the Process Tamer help file has now been fully brought up to date.

In the coming months all other main DC apps will get a similar treatment.  Thanks for being patient

Note: As with all my apps, you can also view the help files online (and see always version info at end).

Is there some way to turn off the info balloons that keep popping up? They are distracting...

Do you have any idea when Dual Core support will be out, and is there anything that can/should be done to facillitate that?

lupis,
let me give some thought to this -
it is in the planning to add more sophisticated taming rules and processor affinity rules.. but i haven't figured out a timeframe for this stuff.. i will try to get it done this summer.

Do you have any idea when Dual Core support will be out, and is there anything that can/should be done to facillitate that?

Anyone who has experienced issues in the past where ProcessTamer could not change the priority of a service should try now - the new version (2.06.1) grabs privileges now that should enable it to tame them.

Hi, I updated process tamer to v2.06. the version number still reflects the older version of 2.05. I reinstalled and same thing. This is not any problem for me but I thought you should know aout it. Thanks, Scott (Member)

Although i have been known to occasionally forget to update the about box, in this case the new version does indeed say 2.06.01, and so does the installer.

so if your version says 2.05 then you are not using the latest beta version.

make sure you
1. download the BETA link (the webpage has both 2.05 and 2.06 available for download, make sure you grab the latest)
2. exit process tamer from the tray before installing the new version over the old.

direct download of beta: https://www.donation...eta/ProcessTamer.exe

Mouser, I might have a dual CPU system I could send you. To cut down on shipping costs I could just send the vital components - motherboard, CPU's, memory. Not sure if it's of interest but if you're getting asked to dev for multiprocessor support it might be handy.

minor update but fixes an annoying tendency to announce its increasing its own priority.
i've also added a better process killer for stubborn processes.

would it be possible, on the next update of process tamer, to have the tray icon more visible?

it just needs something to make it less dark as it's almost invisible against a black background tray (this will be more of a problem with vista on the way).

I have to agree with Nick.  Since I do use a dark window motif, I find it by looking for the "balnK in the systray.  Just my :two:
