From this report, another 'XP extended..." announcement. I don't know why Microsoft would fight this. If people want to buy an OS -- even an unsupported one -- sell it to them and pocket the cash!

I'll gladly kill it when Microsoft releases Windows 7, provided they do deliver something finished, and not an OS requiring a Service Pack to work correctly. The truckload of architectural changes and new features in Windows Vista, combined with all the nice things in Windows 7 they have showed 'til now will mean a kickass upgrade :D

I was just reading about that too on TechRepublic ...gotta make you laugh.

So system builders can sell XP until the end of June 2009 and net book manufacturers can see it for a year on top of that (orm a year after W 7 is released which ever is sooner).

Does this mean they are going to produce a version of W 7 that is lean enough to replace XP on net books? AT least that might be a step in the right direction (if they release it for everyone).

Of course it already is dead. I have a XP machine standing which I cannot repair properly because I can't get my hands on a XP Home SP3 disc. So, dead it is.

The same goes for my 2000 Pro SP4.

Why can't you get an XP SP3 disc? Just slipstream a previous XP disc with SP3 ???

I have no previous discs, remember? And the file that I do have has proven to contain errors, because I slipstreamed SP2 almost a year ago, and it didn't improve.

I did try to purchase a disc from MS, as you recommended, but something was wrong, I think, because I was always taken to the same page leading to nowhere. Maybe I should try again in a different way.

I am not too sure that Amazon etcetera also are offering any Danish copies, and if they do, I imagine they would be full priced, as was your link.

Can I suggest you telephone MS to get a disc - it will save a lot of headaches as the MS website s***s in so many ways!

Win2k is pretty easy to find as well... there are still copies available on eBay and from on-line retailers (often sold as OEM, which means you'll get an ancient modem or something with your purchase

), for example. I guess the big question is: do you have a standalone licence for either of them? If so, all you need is the media from someone. If not, I'm not sure what the implications are (other than the obvious, which I will not dwell on

).

You started a second thought inside my little square mind, (the first one was last year): I am not going to use these computers any more - I am only whining because the old XP really isn't that old, and because I have 20 GB of irreplaceable data out of reach on the Win2k, which I would like to regain - so do I need a Danish CD at all? Or can I perhaps make repair-installations regardless of language, as long as it is the same version otherwise?

Am I the only one who thinks that Microsoft is pretending to work on Windows 7 when in reality they're just rebranding Vista so we all think it's a new product?

They already tested this with Mojave. They're taking that experiment to the next level with Win 7.

It's just buzz word speak for integrating a service pack into a OS distribution media. Means you don't have to install the OS and then install the service pack.

Slipstream SP3 into XP install CD

As long as you have your 'key' u can use someone else's disk surely?

I slipstreamed from here http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/ in May and it did it beautifully without having to do loads of updates after install!

- sure, you clever cat, but quite frankly I don't know anyone that has a CD for Win2000Pro (for which the key is on (inside) the blocked machine only). Most people just stare at me with this special kind of look in their eyes, "What operating system was that?", or even "What kind of disc?" In my circle of acquaintances no-one is a computer expert, and in my physical neighbourhood no-one even has a computer - or they are running Win98, or Vista, or Mac.

But I have gotten my hands on a XP disc, so in the next couple of days I will try to improve on that one machine.

I’ve got a Win2k disk I can copy and send to you - you should be able to get the key off your harddrive by hooking it up to your Vista box and lookiing for it. Interested? Let me know...

You should create a 'BartPE' CD/DVD, this is a bootable CD/DVD that starts a minimalistic Windows environment from CD. In a way, similar to live-CD from a Linux distribution.

The advantage from a 'BartPE' CD/DVD over a Linux live-CD is the support for the NTFS filesystem. Sure, Linux knows about this filesystem and can read from it, but warns against writing to such filesystems (there are several NTFS filesystems, one for Win2000, one for XP and one for Vista).

Check the link for a how-to. Years ago I took the effort in building one with most of my favorite tools and I'm still reaping the rewards from it

Always write your key down off the PC or on a flash drive - encrypted of course...

Of course, with programs like THIS, XP may survive a little longer :-)

Thanks to gHacks for telling

The default language of the software is Polish but it can easily be changed in the config.ini to English so that the language line looks like this: language=english. The only options provided by the interface are to enable or disable the blur effect.
