winamp 5.5 is fantastic (I thought I'd never say that)
« on: November 25, 2007, 04:03 PM »
winamp 5.5 is fantastic (I thought I'd never say that)!

I grew tired with musicIP constant crashes and lack of features. The new standard UI for foobar 9.5 is quite cool, but I'm too lazy to spend dozens of hours chasing all components to make it work the way my 9.3 does.

So I hit winamp. Holy shit. They have improved a lot.
They grab album art quite well. Even fix tags. Album art is displayed in all sizes very well, and the entire thing loads super fast!

Give it a try and tell me what you think...
Plus, it has a MusicIP plugin so you can still mix the way musicIP does (the only saving grace of a tool that looks more like the flintstones' car now than ever :) )

I was pleasantly surprised with the new winamp to. all my music was at once available easily, even though my tags and some of the directory structure is absolutely stuffed  :-[  (we live and learn i hope lol) and its sound is as good as any other i've tried to my ears so what more can you ask for?  Ohh and i think it looks good to :)

It's nice eye-candy, I'll give you that. But it's slow to load and stutters when there's heavy multi-tasking going on. :(

Yeah, they finally fixed that lame tag dialog...I was waiting for that for years. Other then that, Winamp has always been awesome.

You know, I used to preach zoom player, however lately I've moved back to winamp after many plugin/codec issues with ZP. It sucks that I jumped ship so quickly to ZP and spent the money because the issues show no sign of resolve in the upcoming 5.5 beta :-/

Right so there's an Auto-Tag option for single tracks only (shame- quick way to fix tags in many songs would be appreciated). There's also a play similar song option using audio fingerprinting.

Nope.. On the media library, you can select a bunch of songs and select "send to autotag" ;)

There's also a play similar song option using audio fingerprinting.
Oh, i'd like to know about that. Where can i find it?

I think you can do it using gracenote's recommendations.
Plus, you can install the musicIP plugin and have the same recommendations you would using musicIP.

http://winamp.com/ (PR=8)
This was the first music player most people started using. They are celebrating their 10th anniversary. If you cannot find that page... well. There you go.

Folks, I have a ton of mp3's that are untagged... so it makes a right mess of my MP3 player (creative zen vision:M) when I load em on to it.
Is there a good way to bulk fix the tags on a load of files?
I tried that godfather thing but it really doesn't cut the mustard...

Thanks
Vida

@ auto-tagging: add your songs to the media library. Select the songs you want to tag (preferably per 100 songs or so in case of instability -i had a few pure function call crashes with this), right click, Send to: auto-tag. Apply changes after you're happy with the results - it seems to be more accurate than musicIp the few times I used it so far - however YMMV. I assume this requires the track to be fingerprinted? not sure.

@audio fingerprinting: select one song in your media library - right click again, play tracks similar to <song>. The first time you do this a dialog with preferences will popup. If it doesn't check Options > preferences > plugins  > Media library > Nullsoft Playlist Generator and click on Configure selected plugin to access the settings (quite a find). If winamp crashes on exit then this is a known bug with this plugin - wait until it finishes or download the 5.51 beta from filehippo.

The crashes i experienced make me a bit hestitant to use it at this point but once these are ironed out it would be the best auto-tagging solution i know.

Wow, you're not kidding!  I am glad you pointed this out again.  I am a Pro registered user, but I had given up on it.  The interface was starting too feel archaic.  The new Bento skin is awesome and the features are great.

Thanks for the tip!

Justice, I still haven't been able to make it recommend a single song.
It crashes. (using 5.51 here).

Same for the musicIP plugin. It has a mind of its own. I have all my collection analyzed already, I'm sure the MIP tags are on the files, not in the db. Still, the plugin window shows 34000 tracks, 34 left to validate, and pressing the button does nothing.

I have no idea when it's analyzing, or doing what... but it sure doesn't work.
Will post at the MIP forums.

PS: the winamp process is reading from the HD, so it might be doing something. No progress bar or numbers, like the gracenote one does.

I have to say, replaygain in Winamp is weird.
Experienced level of suckage: medium-high
Keyboard shortcut are so-so in customizability.

Crashes are not rare... be warned.

winamp 5.5 is fantastic (I thought I'd never say that)!
... the link www.winamp.com

Thanks!

I haven't/hadn't tried Winamp for quite some years - I only remeber that I didn't like it - but urlwolf's praise made me try it again, and I have to say that this 5.51 really is among the very best, if not The Best! I like my WMP 11 and RealPlayer 11 and K-Lite Media Player Classic and the VideoLAN VLC and the Korean KMPlayer a lot - they are all the finest - but yesterday I removed MPC, VLC and KMP, and made Winamp the default player for all media file types. It really is The Finest. But of course, I don't play around with tagging and what else some said can cause troubles.

Thanks a lot, again, urlwolf!

However, I don't understand why Winamp has to have a button in the taskbar all of the time (it doesn't obey DM2). Can I make it move to the systray / Notification Area?

Yes, there is a option for that in the first sections of the "Preferences" screen, in the "File Types" screen IIRC.

- I have the Agent icon displaying, but I have not yet found any way to remove the taskbar button. Can this be done?

Edit: Of course, I should go ask in the Winamp forum.
