MAN YOU ARE A GENIUS!!! YOUR APP IS AMAZING!!!

(first my english is bad)

I come from Linux, I am sysadmin, but now i need to use a windows machine. In linux I have a "custom desktop" very minimal, and i use gmrun (is old and simple but works)

Now I needed something similar but in windows and i found FARR, IS GREAT!!
To many configuration and clears, very flexible. Has everything i dream :P.

So many thanks, And I want to thank you at least with a possible bug  ;)

First: i used a "vanilla" configuration

Second: the problem is when i use a configuration like (image farr1)

farr1.pngLatest FARR Release 2.250.0 beta - Mar 23, 2020

and i search more than "my windows size" FARR generate the scroll, but if i want go down using the keyboard the scroll not response, "the selected item go lost"  like (image farr2)

farr2.pngLatest FARR Release 2.250.0 beta - Mar 23, 2020

the next item "dont get down" the window remains fixed. If i move the scroll with the mouse works ok!.

Third: i think "is a bug" because when i change the option "result display style" to "small icon report, the scroll go down perfectly with keyboard and mouse, like (image farr3)
farr3.pngLatest FARR Release 2.250.0 beta - Mar 23, 2020

Thanks and regards, On my next "internet purchase" I will buy a license from the site (the US Dollar is expensive for me )

Edit1: I'm using the portable version, I do not know if that can influence

Welcome to the site, insulae
I'm glad you are liking the program.

Someone *just* reported this same bug the other day -- I'm not sure how/when it slipped in.
I'll be away from my desk this week but I'll try to get it fixed next week.

Beta release (see first post in thread for download url).

Nothing really major but hopefully this will get me warmed up for some bigger improvements, and it fixes the weird titlebar date bug.

Version 2.233.01 beta - Feb 10, 2018
  • [BugFix] Titlebar with date and time in it (Advanced Visuals options tab) was being overwritten with fixed date/time.
  • [Improvement] Variable replacements (like %APPDRIVE%) are now performed on external tools paths, making them more suitable for portable use.
  • [Improvement] Added context-menu item to copy all result paths to clipboard.
  • [Feature] Added an advanced-user feature for customizing the htmlview mode using a custom css style sheet.  See the Html View Mode help page for more info.
  • [Feature] New ability to specify custom directories to load additional alias files from (could be used to point to a shared dropbox folder for example, to aid synchronizing accross pcs).
  • [Feature] New ability to specify custom search folder paths  (could be used to point to a shared dropbox folder for example, to aid synchronizing accross pcs).

Thank you for not abandoning my favorite piece of software, Mouser. Since you broke cover and stepped into the crossfire, it's only fair that we should pelt you with bug reports and complaints.  :P

A minor snag: cpanel aliases (actually, all aliases, but that is the only one I use) don't seem to display icons on my Windows 10 system.
0.pngLatest FARR Release 2.250.0 beta - Mar 23, 2020

When I peek with Process Monitor, I see that FARR is trying to access the whole alias definition as if it were an actual *.ico path.

No rush, just FYI.  :D Thanks again.

How strange! I shall look into it.
So you say it happens with all of the alias icons on windows 10??

Missing icons is not a minor snag -- icons are a key feature of FARR!

Yes, that has been my experience. As I said, I don't use the majority of built-in aliases and most of them don't even have icon definitions, but the ones I tested all show up like this.

I have another installation on Win8 but I have gotten so used to broken icons due to the Control Panel weirdness that I honestly don't remember if the situation is different on that computer. I can report back later if you like.

If you could check that the alias folders have the icons in them.. and let me know if this is a portable or setup install.

Can anyone else confirm this issue?

I have long been using the Chocolatey setup (latest stable).

Today I figured something could be wrong with that package so I uninstalled it and installed the version you posted at the top of this thread. (2.233.01 beta. Not portable)

Icons look like they're where they're supposed to be (I have "C:\Program Files (x86)\FindAndRunRobot\AliasGroups\Installed\cpanel\Region.ico" and all its friends).

Switching to large icons and clearing Windows icon cache did not help. Not using any font overrides.

Regarding icons, it could be really handy to add a feature/option to show batchfiles icons in a different way:

if a batchfile named "testfile.bat" has, in the same folder, an icon file "testfile.ico" it could use that icon instead.

(I often use batchfiles, but don't want use a tool like bat2exe to embed the icon because the antivirus incorrectly usually detect the output exe as a virus)

:D

This is an interesting idea.. perhaps an option to set custom icons by file extension would be useful..

Strange, testing it on a vmware windows 10, the cpanel alias icons all showed fine..

I went ahead and switched to a brand new windows user profile and sure enough, cpanel icons are working nicely in there. So it looks like something about icon associations is kinda borked on my main account. I'll post an update here if I can figure out what it is.

One other thing I noticed though: In the new profile, I created a duplicate copy of cpanel in myaliases and named it "cp". (I also do this on my main account to save keystrokes.) Afterwards, the real "cpanel" aliases were still working ok, but the custom alias "cp" all showed a generic icon. This generic icon was different from the one shown in my main profile, so it's entirely possible this too is caused by something borked on my end.

Lastly, deleting the DonationCoder directory in MyDocuments and starting over with a clean setup did not change anything, so it's most probably due to some other Windows setting on my user profile.

Anyway, thank you for your time.

**A great idea about custom icons for batch files**

I too would love this feature!

I'll have to go remind myself about creating duplicate aliases.  It may simply be that it copies the alias but the icons aren't in the new alias directory so they aren't being found.

One thing you should check out though is that FARR now has a "Quick Search Words" area specifically designed to make it easy for you to specify shorthands for things, so if you just added
cp=cpanel
To that, you could type cp instead of cpanel.

Ding! That was exactly the case with my test profile. Everything was working after I copied all icons to [Documents]\DonationCoder\FindAndRunRobot\AliasGroups\MyCustom

"Quick Search Words"

Well, that's a much cleaner solution now, isn't it?  :-[

I still will need to use a custom alias for the time being though, because at least one of the cpanel aliases is not updated to show up on Win10 (namely, "Region").

When I set the winvermin to 6.1 (as opposed to 6.3), it starts working for me. Dunno if it would break anything for other people though.

Region | %windir%\system32\control.exe international /ICON=Region.ico /winvermin=6.1 /winvermax=6.3

Well, that's embarassing. Turns out something was wrong with the *.ico file associations in my profile. I don't know what exactly fixed the issue, but I reset/deleted several different things and all is fine now. Sorry about the bother.
