[reply with little or no help]Not that I know of, but I suppose it might be possible if you use sticky notes that can be completely transparent (except the text of course) and be "stuck" to the desktop (on bottom, as it is). I've never really been into sticky notes myself, so I don't know if any can do that…[/reply with little or no help]

1. Set your windows wallpaper to pint to a blank .bmp file

2. Create a .lnk to the .bmp file and plop it on your desktop

3. Double-click the link; use the Text features of whatever graphics editor you have associated with .bmp files

4. Right-click desktop / Refresh

5. ...

6. Profit!

I was just going to make Ralf's point.

Depending on your system you could  also look here:

How big of a note? If not too big then simply RightClick - New Text File and then create your note as part of the file name.

You might have to click on the icon to see the full text. You can even be creative and use a blank icon.

Is there a way to directly write notes onto the Windows desktop?
.. if you use sticky notes ..

- as TucknDar said: NoteZilla > Create Note > (Settings) > send note to desktop:

DesktopNoteZilla.gif

And what's more: the note will stay on the desktop, even after a PC restart!  Edit: - and you can combine the note with a reminder - popup, or a sound track!

Maybe this would solve your problem:
Desktop Notepad - Desktop Notepad is a tool which displays the text on your desktop wallpaper. It is user-friendly but feature-rich tool. Now you can write down reminders or work plans and you will see them on the screen. Desktop Notepad can be used to streamline your note-taking. Move your mouse over Desktop Notepad text and the tool will 'wake up' and display its transparent and resizable window.

I *think* masu wants something that will allow him to type text directly onto the desktop without having to open a new note. Kind of like setting off a big part of the desktop as a scratch pad? I was going to suggest Notezilla myself but for an awesome FOSS alternative look no further than Stickies.

Installing Vista! ;D. There are quite some apps like the one Darwin mentions. I swear we ever have a thread discussing them... let me check... em, no, we have some isolated threads discussing specific programs, but not a cumulative thread. Anyway, you have the option of NoteZilla and Gizmo mentions a couple of options in his website. I've used ATnotes in the past, and liked it.

Another option I found this morning is Note-It by our fellow DCer Veign.

Veign's Note-It even has the rare feature to "Store images inside a note - simply paste into the note"

Thanks to all of those who have suggested NoteZilla.

@Curt: NoteZilla also lets you to insert images inside sticky notes. You can also copy from a website and paste it in to a sticky note. Did you get my reply to your email about the same question?

... NoteZilla also lets you to insert images inside sticky notes. ...

To the best of my experience and (lack of) understanding, NoteZilla will merely copy the address of the image, not the image itself. Edit: What a bummer, Curt: Just right-click, and click "Insert Picture"!!

@ Gautam, thanks for participating here at DC. The last mail I received from you, was when you asked me >>what exactly you like more in Stickies so that we can take only the best aspects of Stickies?<<. (see edited)

If you use MS Outlook (not Outlook Express) for your mail, you can use its note function to create a note on your desktop that will be shown there whenever Outlook runs. Can't remember exactly how I did it. Try to drag and drop a note to the desktop. That should do it. Saves having another program running if your using MS Outlook anyway :>)

This has been mentioned in a couple other threads here, but I just found out about it today:

Active Desktop Calendar

It allows you to put a calendar on your desktop with calendar items in a list, as well as a tasks/todo/notes area. You can also import your calendar (ICAL) from Google or Outlook.

Lifehacker recently posted this: Geek to live: Incorporate text files into your desktop. It describes how to use Samurize to accomplish what you're after, masu.

Take a look at this:

I think it fits the bill perfectly, and is light on resources.

Thanks Darwin & Manimatters,

To update the list, should we have to open the text file each time? Oh.. that seems tedious if we have several lists.
