General Software Discussion / Directory Opus 10

For those that may be interested, Directory Opus 10 has just been released:

Directory Opus 10

Hmm... I can't really see much in the way of options for viewing feeds in Feeddemon 4. I'd be happy to go screenshot happy and show you what it looks like in various configurations, but I don't see any style options, just "Theme" (Blue, Orange, Olive, Black, and Silver).

The style options are not in the options dialog, which is where it seems you looked. There's a drop down menu at the bottom right of  the window, called "Styles". The four styles available - Expando, Speed Reader, Surfer, Time Cards - can be selected from here. Alternatively, you can change newspaper styles from the Advanced tab in the Feed Properties dialog.

- you were warned. I did say I don't use themes, meaning I have no idea what to do!

From the text file included in the themes ...

"Requirements: Windows XP with a patched uxtheme.dll file.

An universal uxtheme patcher for XP can be found here:
http://www.softpedia...e-MultiPatcher.shtml

Doubleclick on the *.msstyles file to use the theme."

You could try working through the suggestions in this FAQ - http://resource.dopu...viewtopic.php?t=6285

Working beautifully now thanks Mouser.

One comment though, the settings you've added are not immediately obvious to someone unfamiliar with the terminology. To me it would be sensible to have options like "Include Windows dropshadow" rather than "auto-remove area outside border with alpha less than (default 200). Nothing in that points the lay person (ie, me) as to why the shadows weren't being captured. No doubt there are plenty of people who understand exactly what you're talking about so perhaps I'm in the minority here. Anyway, food for thought.

If your needs are very simple you could try my very old and very basic feed editor - http://banham.cc/feededit/index.htm

It's free at least :)

Screenshot Captor / Re: Capture rounded corners in Vista

but really you can just wait for my next major transparency mechanism.

Ok, will do. I only posted and experimented because I thought you wanted feedback on the newest beta. Perhaps I misread. :)

Ok, with the black border option removed I get the following (note the small black dots on the corners). I've played briefly with the transparency options but nothing seems to remove this artifact.

I've just tried today's beta and the results are somewhat mixed. It seems to now recognise the curved borders but the active window (using Alt-PrtScr) is captured in Aero Basic mode rather than Aero - is there a setting I've missed which controls this ?

Also, for the life of me I cannot work out why there's a black border around the image. No doubt I've missed something though I have turned off: Preferences/Post-Capture Options/Add Border to Image

One small thing I'd love to have changed is the "ding" sound played whenever I select a thumbnail in the Screenshot Panel. I cannot find an option for this, it appears to be using the Windows Default Beep sound. A small thing, sure, but an annoying one. :)

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout (audio player)
« on: April 17, 2010, 02:16 AM »
A tiny little buglette I've just noticed. If the first line of the seekbar text contains a space, it will be gone when Trout restarts. Spaces at the beginning of other lines work fine.

Sounds to me like this tool would be of more use to pirates for finding cracks...

Thanks Lanux, I wasn't sure and didn't think to check web.archive.org.

Not sure if this is the same program - http://www.magister-lex.at/RUNit/

General Software Discussion / Re: Stop Forum Spam
« on: March 29, 2010, 08:43 AM »
I'm the admin for the DOpus Resource site and I haven't seen any bot spammers at all since I changed two things in phpbb3. Firstly, only members can post, and secondly instead of a normal image captcha I am using a question captcha which asks a question regarding the authors of DOpus. This seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks. Of course, this won't stopped a real person from spamming but we've rarely seen that. In phpbb2 I used a mod called "Textual Confirmation" which does that same thing as the question captcha. Again, it solved the spam problem.

Whilst the stopspam site is a good idea, it slows down the registration process for new users and/or creates a lot of work to keep on top of the list.

Any thoughts ?

For comparison purposes, here's the same window, captured with WindowClippings. The white background was added by Screenshot Captor when I imported the image to use the blur function. WindowClippings itself uses transparency instead of a white background.

Here is an image created using Screenshot Captor using the Grab Active Window function.

Nope, nothing unusual at all. Bog standard Vista Aero.

Am I going mad or is this still broken ? I've never been able to capture Vista rounded corners and drop shadow with Screenshot Captor - it's the single reason I still keep WindowClippings around.

Actually, what I did first was use Everything to see where it was.  But maybe I wasn't looking for the right word or something.  honestly, it was just a major brain fart.

Like I said earlier in the thread, the Opus log would have told you where the files had been moved, saving you the hassle of searching for them.

What's showing in the Opus log ? Normally it would show you where the files went.

I read in the FAQ that it runs on Netbooks

You did change the settings to Netbook mode ?

Heh, you don't have to like it. I found that it was well worth the money - $22AUD for about 20 hours of solid gameplay (that's just completing the main storyline - it continues on after that if you want to keep playing). Compared with the $100AUD games which I've bought in the past that gave me very little.

Still, each to their own.

Torchlight is great fun. If you enjoyed Diablo and Diablo 2 then you will certainly get your money's worth from it. As for the single player only aspect, I liked it, it made a change from loads of annoying kids online ruining the fun for people. It's a good game to unwind with minimal brain required. Apparently there's a multiplayer version under development but for now I was more than happy with paying $20 for the single player, let alone this discount.

In my case I certainly wasn't implying that there was a security issue with your software. I've installed other things with very few users and they havent made Norton delete the archive though. Perhaps you could post on the Symantec forums and see if there's a solution.
