Torchlight 50% off until Monday at Steam

Torchlight is an action RPG à la Diablo, however it's single-player only.

however it's single-player only.

Are these kinds of games even fun without multiplayer?

Torchlight is great fun. If you enjoyed Diablo and Diablo 2 then you will certainly get your money's worth from it. As for the single player only aspect, I liked it, it made a change from loads of annoying kids online ruining the fun for people. It's a good game to unwind with minimal brain required. Apparently there's a multiplayer version under development but for now I was more than happy with paying $20 for the single player, let alone this discount.

Agreeing with the others in the thread. This is a great game. I haven't finished it yet, but I'm almost at the end of the main quest.

Someone is reportedly working on a multi-player mod for it & the company is using this as the basis for an MMO to come out at a later date. For $10 this is a steal, but if you still aren't convinced you can download a demo at www.runicgames.com.

here's a recent review of this game from 2404.org, they gave the game a respectable 8.2 from a possible 10.

A thing to note is there is apparently also a fledging mod community behind this game

Torchlight is great fun. If you enjoyed Diablo and Diablo 2 then you will certainly get your money's worth from it.

Diablo 2 is one of my favorite games, but I still only play it with other people. If I ever do play it single player, it's only to work up my character in some way so I can show him off to my friends I play with.

As for online griefers, I never have that problem because I only play with people I know. So I get all the benefits you just described about a limitation of Torchlight while still retaining full benefits of being free to play with other people.

They say there is a multiplayer game coming from the developers of Torchlight, but from what I've read, it's an entirely different game that you would have to buy separately, plus it's an MMO which probably means monthly fees and those pesky griefers.

Torchlight just sounds too much like an extended demo/proof of concept to me with so few characters/classes and other limitations. They even say that the game was made as a framework to base their MMO off of.

I'm sure it's probably fun, but I still haven't seen or heard any reason why I should choose Torchlight from the myriad other Diablo-esque hack'n'slashers out there that feature multiplayer.

EDIT: Grammar and clarification.

Heh, you don't have to like it. I found that it was well worth the money - $22AUD for about 20 hours of solid gameplay (that's just completing the main storyline - it continues on after that if you want to keep playing). Compared with the $100AUD games which I've bought in the past that gave me very little.

Still, each to their own.

I'm not saying I don't, or won't, like it; I haven't even played it yet. I'm just fishing for reasons to spend money on this game when what is, in my opinion, the best thing about these games, multiplayer, is nowhere to be found.

Diablo 2 is a great game, but the reason why I'm still playing it today is because of the multiplayer. I doubt I would have played it much after completing it nearly ten years ago.

So I'm still wondering if this game is really so great that it compensates for the lack of multiplayer, or if it will be just a good 20 hour game with virtually no replay value.

It's more of a coffee break game that you whip out for a few minutes or an hour when you have nothing better to do. The game isn't really all that complicated or deep but it IS quite fun to play in short runs of 15-90 minutes. I am not sure if it is worth the 20 dollars they sell it for normally but it was certainly worth 10 dollars

fwiw, the 50% offer is now extended until the 3rd of January but as Lashiec noted on the other thread, it's best to wait until the last day.

It should also be of note that presently it is 75% off! It won't last long however (As far as I can figure out, ending in about 20 hours)

This was not a game I planned on purchasing, but with the rave reviews and the 75% off and the fact that it is now under $5, I bought it. I'm absolutely sure I will get more than $5 worth of entertainment out of it.

I can't stop playing it.  It even runs decent on my Netbook! So, uh, anyone find the Shimmering Ember in the place surrounded by water yet?  I can't seem to find it anywhere....

I read in the FAQ that it runs on Netbooks so I downloaded the demo and tried it out. Well... it did run, but it was not a pleasant experience for me. It was way too choppy and slow. I guess your mileage may vary when it comes to netbook play.

I might have purchased it for $5 but I missed it. Rats!

I just finished the main quest & have started working on the "infinite dungeon".

It's a fun game, but I'm one of those weird, anti-social gamers you hear about that only plays single-player games.

Once again it's $5 today only (for 16 more hours). I'll stay true to my word and buy it now. I hope it's as good as you all say!

So I've given Torchlight a try on a PC that can handle it. A few thoughts:

Loading times take forever! Probably 20-30 seconds any time I go from town to the dungeon. Also, why the long load time just to show the menu, which upon clicking Continue makes it load all over again before letting me play? Ugh!

Being able to send your pet to town to sell your stuff is a great idea! Too bad they totally ruined it by completely interrupting the game whenever your pet returns. Is there any way to disable the "Your pet has returned!" notification that breaks the flow of gameplay? They have a voice announce the return of my pet anyway. So why couldn't the pet just come to you and drop the money at your feet, which would make you automatically pick it up and then you'd know how much he earned selling your crap without interrupting the game?

What's with the vague/interchangeable classes? I thought I picked the magic class, so why am I able to spend skillpoints on improving armor or melee or ranged weapons? Where are all my cool spells?

I'm not finding that the game flows very well. I find myself constantly stopping to sort the loot and send my pet to town to sell, which then stops the game again in a minute or so when he returns.

I'm practically falling asleep playing the game.

The music sounds very similar to Diablo music. Yeah, I know, the same guy did the music for Torchlight, but it just reminds me of Diablo and makes me wish I was playing it with some buddies instead of Torchlight alone.

I'd say it's a mediocre hack'n'slash with some (one?) really good--though poorly implemented--new idea(s). All in all I'm very glad I waited until it was $5 before I bought it. I would feel extremely disappointed had I spent more on it. I don't understand why everyone else seems to have nothing but high praise for it.

that's quite a number of times this game is being on sale. maybe they're taking advantage of the delays in Diablo 3.
