Twice I've tried to install this program and twice Norton AV2010 has deleted it, with a notice about suspicious activity detected. Whilst I'm sure it's a false positive given that others seem to be having no problem I thought it worth mentioning because there may well be something the author can do to prevent this happening.

Any thoughts ?

I know you've already fixed it but couldn't you have just turned off the associations in 7Zips options dialog ?

Screenshot Captor / Re: "Sent to Imageshack" option
« on: November 04, 2009, 02:24 PM »
For Opus users, uploading directly to Imageshack is very simple and doesn't require any additional tools.

Opus already has its own uploader built in and it can be configured to send the current screenshot:

Title: Imageshack
Program: "C\Program Files\GPSoftware\Directory Opus\dopusrt.exe"
Working Dir: "C\Program Files\GPSoftware\Directory Opus\"
Parameters: /CMD Image FROM="%file%" UPLOAD=imageshack

This will, of course, use your current Opus settings for Imageshack and can upload the file to your registered account, and/or copy the url to the clipboard in a number of different formats.

Perhaps you need to run it initially as Admin under Vista/7 so that the settings stick ?

A small bug with the resume playback. Well, it might be intentional but it's annoying. If the command line clears the playlist and a new album is loaded then the resume actually resumes a track from the previous playlist.

are there any Outlook command lines that I could integrate in FARR?

There's a full list of available command line switches here : http://www.outlook-t...wto/commandlines.htm

Whilst it's not what you wanted I find it useful to have a couple of frequent email recipients set up on hotkeys. One of mousers recent video tutorials (any more of these coming ?) explains how to do this - this is shown from 4:50mins in the video. That way, after hitting the hotkey, you only need to type a suitable subject and hit return. Very handy for a few recipients.

For someone who hates Windows and moved to Linux and has been raving about it ever since you sure do post a lot of Windows topics.

If a price would depend on the product's usage, I wonder if the Firefox guys were millionaires...

Firefox generates millions of dollars.

personally I don't see $75USD value in it
At least you got my point here.

Not really, you're saying that it's over-priced. I'm saying that for me it's not worth the money - it's not my preferred manager so it wouldn't be worth $10 to me - let alone $75. Others who use it all the time are easily getting $75 worth of value from it.

Forgetting for a moment the brand of file manager, regardless which you prefer, software which is used constantly is easily worth the price of dinner and a movie. :)

35
Sure, but it is just a file manager (although a good one indeed). $74.95 (still a quite high value in real money) is too much IMHO.
He could ofc take the double of that, and someone could willingly pay that. But ... come on: $74.95 for a file manager?!

I spend a lot of my computer time using a file manager, it's easily the most used application on the pc. Compared to Office 2007 which I use infrequently I get good value from my $85AUD for Opus.

I installed XYPlorer some time ago for a brief look and personally I don't see $75USD value in it, but someone who uses it all the time may disagree. Realistically, it's 2009 here in Australia and $75USD doesn't get you much no matter what you try to buy. :)

36
Another reason to spend money for another file manager. Don't support DOpus-like capitalism.  :P

Yes. How dare software authors attempt to make money...

I just don't get the complaints - Opus costs about the same as a dinner for two at a reasonable restaurant here in Aus. I know which I get more value from.

DonL has the right to charge any price he likes and users have the right to decide whether they feel the product worthwhile. Personally I don't like the fact that there's no upgrade path from Home to Pro and I think that might be a mistake. Still, that's just my opinion and as I said, DonL can try whatever marketing methods he likes.

Living Room / Re: What books are you reading?

For recreational reading, I just finished Carlos Ruiz Zafon's The Shadow of the Wind.

Sounds interesting, added to my "to read" list.

I've recently been reading the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich - 15 books so far with several novellas too. No need to bring your brain for these, just sheer fun at the expense of Stephanie Plum and an amazing cast of characters, including her Grandmother who's described as "a soup chicken wearing a tracksuit". :)

They're all much too high brow. :)

Just got the latest Discworld novel - Unseen Academicals.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I just stumbled across it. I wrote a small clock program ages ago specifically to loiter on a second monitor whilst gaming. It might be of use to some here - nothing flash - in fact VERY basic...

General Software Discussion / Re: Who should judge Win7's success?
« on: October 15, 2009, 04:33 PM »
I think the main things were the new Windows Explorer was *less* usable and functional for the way I work (despite having some good ideas). The new search functionality also sucks in my opinion (I wrote a blog post partly about this and how to fix it in Win7). The new Taskbar and Start menu changes were not appealing to me (I always set XP to "Classic" mode and turn off taskbar grouping, and turn on Quicklaunch). UAC was also a major annoyance. As a savvy computer user I've seldom, if ever, had major security issues, so it was - for me - a solution in search of a problem, and really just turned into an annoyance. Fortunately I could turn it off, but Vista still bitched about that (Security Center warning).

The biggest thing, which I did find odd considering all the new tech and optimizations, was that despite running it on a very nice (for the time) quad core with a healthy amount of RAM and a nice graphics card, Vista still felt sluggish and "chunky".

I haven't used Windows Explorer since Directory Opus was released for the pc so that was a non-issue for me. Opus also goes a long way towards making UAC less annoying. No more multiple prompts for creating folders/moving files etc. I can understand you not liking Explorer in Vista but I don't understand how you could use Explorer with XP either. :)

Vista can be set to Classic mode, in fact that's what I am using now - a change is as good as a holiday, I couldn't stand the cartoonish blue Luna on XP either - Classic does fail miserably if you use the sidebar though - looks horrible.

As for your 'feeling' that it's sluggish, I've never had this impression (dual core, 2Gb ram and 640Mb GT8800 gfx here). That said, I always turn off window/menu animations (restore/minimize etc), they always seem to make things feel slower - I much prefer the snappier instant change.

Still, each to their own, and I still haven't read a reason to upgrade :)

I never understood the Vista hate. Certainly a number of hardware companies dropped the ball when it came to their drivers but other than that it's been fine and stable for me since release.

I'm yet to see a compelling reason to pay for an upgrade to 7.

As for judging the success of Windows 7, the commercial results will give an indication of it's adoption rate I suppose. As others have said though, if you like it and it improves your own computer time then it's a success for you. No doubt, people with ancient hardware will try to install it and then complain bitterly that it doesn't work as well as [insert OS designed more than 10 years ago]. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 9
« on: October 09, 2009, 03:05 PM »
The multifunc is only for Drive buttons. You can easily create your own three way buttons which perform LMB/RMB/MMB functions. There are a number of tutorials and example buttons on the resource centre which should get you started.

The GO command has an OPENINDUAL argument, as well as OPENINLEFT/OPENINRIGHT. The OPENINDUAL arg will perform pretty much as the multifunc in that the lister will be forced into DUAL mode by it.

You could set up the 3 button as follows:

LMB
Go "V:\Media"
RMB
Go "V:\Media" OPENINDUAL

or

LMB
Go "V:\Media" OPENINLEFT
RMB
Go "V:\Media" OPENINRIGHT

On the "Drives" toolbar:
- left click on a drive button opens in the left lister
- right click on a drive button opens in the right lister

Yes that's a correct interpretation. To do this, you need to add the 'multifunc' argument to the drives button.

Enter customize mode and you'll find the drives button shrinks down to a single item, edit that item so that the command is:

Go DRIVEBUTTONS=multifunc

The multifunc argument will force the lister into dual mode if it's not already in it when you right click to open a drive.

There are a number of other arguments which can be used here, seperate them with a comma. For example, my hdd button is:

Go DRIVEBUTTONS=hideempty,-ghmn,multifunc

Which does the following:

- Hides Empty Drives (usb etc)
- Filters out CD Drive  (they're shown on another toolbar for me)

Hope that gets you started.

Thanks for the suggestions re. slowdown Nick, I will try them and see if I can pinpoint anything causing it. Currently I only have about 8 feeds subscribed and this installation of windows has never had FeedDemon installed on it afaik.

Just for the record this machine, whilst not state of the art, is certainly no slouch. Core 2 Duo 2.3Ghz, 2G Ram, 640Mb GT8800 gfx and plenty of hdd space.

Update: I tried all the suggestions but nothing made a difference. However, I think I've worked out what the issue was - in previous versions I had increased the upper limit of posts displayed per page and it had never caused me an issue, doing the same with 3.x seems to be the direct cause of the slowdowns.

45
As the Op mentioned the advert discussion in forums (and also blogs as you say) does not constitute full disclosure to the end user. I too am a registered user of 2.# FeedDemon and thought I'd try the new release. I was disappointed on two fronts:

1) The ad support, surely we registered users could at least get a short window in which to evaluate without ads, then either pay an update fee or see the ads.

2) The entire program seems to be running through treacle. The interface seems unresponsive. Perhaps this is a reflection of the synchronisation but that appears to only occur when FD is shut down. It's not something tangible that I could give you examples of but it just seems very different to the feel of previous incarnations.

Whilst I understand that you sold FeedDemon to Newsgator for financial reasons and I certainly wouldn't deny you that right (and am in fact pleased that your work was rewarded in this way), the program has never been the same since. Such a shame.

Directory Opus is a great software and is worth the money paid for it. It has a shortcoming though, namely it doesn't have a language file in text format, so it is not freely translatable by anyone who wants to do it. I myself use UltraExplorer and FreeCommander, which are free and also freely translatable.

If you email GPSoftware directly and let them know you're willing to provide a translation for a language not yet covered then they will provide all the necessary requirements to you. In the past translators have been known to get a free license too.

47
Have you tried emailing GPSoftware directly and explaining your request to them? I wouldn't be surprised if they granted a further trial period.

48
You can install the trial of DOpus, if you use virtualization software.

Which is taking advantage of a loophole to gain free use of software past the provided trial period. Surely an effective 60 days of usage is enough to decide whether Opus is for you or not?

Living Room / Re: Brief rant Re:mIRC
« on: June 06, 2009, 02:02 AM »
There is no grey area with mIRC as far as I can see. It's always been shareware, you're just annoyed that you can't use it by ignoring the nag now.  :)

He relied on people's honesty for a long time, now he's changed his mind - so be it.

When I bought mIRC (years ago) it was one of the cheapest pieces of shareware I'd bought - only cost about $USD10...

I edited my post above with correct information - I hadn't noticed before that you were using version 8.
