General Software Discussion / Re: Stay Away From Microsoft VISTA
« on: September 01, 2007, 03:40 AM »
Get mouserOS going!

Seriously though, I'm pretty content with my XP, although I was far more satisfied with 2k, to be honest. But there just came a point where some cool software and features would not work in good old 2k. Vista will not get anywhere near this laptop as long as every piece of software I need and use works with XP (which I'm sure mouser's app will for any foreseeable future 8) ).

Maybe, just maybe ReactOS will someday be a good alternative. That would be awesome, although I won't hold my breath waiting...

General Software Discussion / Re: best Windows Explorer replacement
« on: August 31, 2007, 02:10 AM »
I think kalos is talking about a Windows Shell replacement, not just a file manager, although the 2 go hand in hand right..

bb4win, windowblinds, etc.

and if you are meaning file managers, then DOpus, TC, XY and x2 are some good ones to take a look at - every ones definition of best is very different ;)
Yes, and I did talk about shells :). Btw, Windowblinds is not a shell, it just skins the windows. My personal favourite shell is LiteStep, while bblean (i.e. bb4win) is also an excellent shell. I suggest kalos take a look at these and a good file manager along with it.

hello

can you tell me please whats the best Windows Explorer replacement?
the fastest (very important) and most customizable

PS:
I want to fully integrate it (replace explorer.exe, replace keyboard shortcuts etc) can I do it with a Windows Explorer replacement or I need a shell?

thanks
First of all, I don't think there is one "best" Explorer replacement. Everyone has different needs, and while some prefer Directory Opus, others prefer Total Commander or any other file manager.

As for "full integration" you need a shell. It is possible to use a file manager, AFAIK, but it requires some extra tools and utilities (systray and hotkeys, for instance), while a decent shell does all the important shell-work.

I think the topic has been discussed before, so try a search and you'll probably find some good explanations :)

Blueprint is now in version 0.5.

While there is some room for improvement (mainly to do with forms and typography, IMO) I think this is an excellent CSS framework! CSS has frustrated me a lot, but Blueprint has brought a lot of sense to it for me.

Highly recommended

From the looks of it, I think mouser's tool Drag+Drop Robot along with a commandline ftp tool could do the job for you. I haven't tried it myself, though :-[

Do anyone else use Drag+Drop Robot for something like this?

There are some nice AHK scripts for that. Check these links out:

That would be sooo excellent!!

Ouch - bad luck. At least you have a good excuse to sit with your feet up ;)
Heh, yeah, I suppose I should enjoy this period of not having to clean the bathroom, take out garbage, go grocerishopping, etc... ;)

Not that I recommend this though,

[OT]as I told you on IRC earlier, I broke my leg while playing with some kids at work. I work in a kindergarten and was playing football/soccer with a few kids when I slipped on some gravel on the asphalt where we were playing. 'CRACK'. I could actually hear the bone break, then thinking "you've got to be kidding..." :(

Feels kinda stupid when I've been playing football for 21 years without breaking anything then breaking my leg playing with 5-year olds  :-\

But luckily it wasn't a "bad break", so I didn't need any surgery or anything. Should be ok in 5 weeks, although my leg will probably look a little weird ;)[/OT]

Congratulations, lanux128!!

Babies are so cool :-*

Any of these exercises targeted towards computer users who's suffered a broken leg, by any chance  :-\

Paging Martin Aignesberger?  Martin?

yep, I'm here since I monitor DC regularly :)
What tool do you use to monitor DC?

 :P

All kidding aside. I use WsW too, and find it save me a lot of time! While I do like RSS, I certainly wouldn't use it over WsW, which I think is far more powerful.

Living Room / Re: How do you organise your 'My Documents' folder

as soon as I get a new hard drive, I will come up with some sort of organization method that works for me. ;D
Yeah, right! :P

Looks to me like the zooming is an in-game feature, which the user then has taken a regular screenshot of.

I'm listening in on this one...

I've started using tag2find a bit, but not extensively yet, but it might be a reasonable solution. Tagging, I mean. Then you could leave the docs in a mess, but still easily locate them. Personally I place docs in any related folder, i.e. work, studies -> subject -> year, hobby... etc. I think tagging could be ideal for me.

General Software Discussion / Re: Top 3 programs you use
« on: August 12, 2007, 01:28 AM »
looking at these programs it seems to me you need to change the question a bit.  I find it unlikely that anyone, except perhaps mouser, actually uses FARR for more than a few seconds at a time, yeah sure its a convenient way to launch a program but wouldn't what's launched be of more interest?  Maybe if you had a few categories, Favourite launcher, file/directory explorer, browser, other utilities, and most used program apart from those categories.  Just a thought.
I read the initial question more or less as "The 3 applications you like most", i.e. Top 3 as in 3 favourites. FARR is one of them, so...

I probably should have LiteStep in there, btw, although it's a bit different from all the other software.

Top three...

1. Total Commander
2. Find And Run Robot
3. WebSite-Watcher

Probably in that order, too.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I was wondering whether anyone use a AutoHotkey Script to manage their startup items? Either just a simple one or a more advanced with a GUI...?

Last, but not least, there's a program called Litestep that functions similar to Window Blinds. I haven't used it but its very popular and there a lot of themes out there for it.

Nice Litestep theme sample here:

As a longtime LiteStep user I feel I should reply here. Actually LiteStep does pretty much everything BUT the WindowBlinds functions. LiteStep is a shell replacement, i.e. it replaces the default explorer look (taskbar, start button, desktop icons, etc...) and adds a bazillion extra features through a modular system, but it won't skin your windows like windowblinds will.

845
I've checked it out for a little while now. Very nice, but I won't be buying it. There doesn't seem to be anything in there that I really need and that my other apps don't already cover. With FARR2 and FileBoxExtender I've got a better solution for my needs.

But again, does what it says just fine, from what I could see in the short time I ran it.

846
Anyone here use this app? Opinions?

847
yes, jgpaiva, I know, but that requires a browser window to be opened and google to do its magic. I'd like instant results within FARR.

848
Excellent choice! there are some truly brilliant utilities to be found! Well deserved

849
I'd like to see a plugin that converts various measurement units, such as Celsius -> Fahrenheit, gallon -> liter, for instance.

example: alias 'conv'
conv 100 fahrenheit celsius
would convert 100 fahrenheit to celsius.

Or the crazy Fahrenheit/gallon/inch/etc. people out there could just use proper units :P

Actually yes (not with Opera). It was when I had protected a folder using the XP cacls command. It took me a while figuring out that I needed to give system access to the folder I was running the installer from. I can't remember which installer this was, but it was a .msi

So, question is: Have you made any changes to permissions? Tried running the installer from another location, such as c:\ ?
