Developer's Corner / Re: The Best Introductory Language

Great find, KenR!

Yes, I use it too! It's awesome! Would be even better with "grids" indicating time-zones, but I guess I *could* do that myself.

probably won't do that, though :-[

I use it for my external hdd (rarely though, as it's connected pretty much 24/7) and my iPod, but not for my thumbdrive. I'm planning on buying a better thumbdrive with more space (currently 128mb :o ) which I'll be running a few apps on, and I'll probably use the safely remove-option when I get that.

General Software Discussion / Re: KeyPass v2 previews are out
« on: April 12, 2007, 05:04 PM »
Looks like, for the time being, i'll just keep to my current version of keepass, though ;)
You better! The previous alpha was pretty buggy. There are several excellent new features and enhancements though! Looking forward to the final version!

KeePass is a must-have. I'd be lost without it!

Until there is a database/index feature in FARR, how about a plugin that'll search the index made and maintained by Locate32?

Locate32 -> http://locate32.webhop.org/

Total Commander has a plugin that can search the Locate index, for ultra fast searches in the file manager. Take a look at this thread for details: http://www.ghisler.c...iewtopic.php?t=14087

Living Room / Re: Why Linux is better
« on: April 12, 2007, 04:06 AM »
not that I'm a linux user or ever was one (except for a few days checking out Red Hat 6 some years ago), but I have to agree with iphigenie. Many of the pro-Linux things mentioned on that site can be achieved with little effort in Windows as well. Alternative shells or free utilities provide many win-enhancements.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 9
« on: April 12, 2007, 03:58 AM »
Total Commander has proper lifetime license, and it's a heckuva lot cheaper than DOpus. I don't doubt that DOpus is an extraordinary Filemanager, but the price is crazy and so is the upgrad scheme, IMO.

I'll definitely stick with TC and it's excellent plugin system 8)

Living Room / Re: What Programs Run In Your System Tray?
« on: April 12, 2007, 02:59 AM »
I have a bunch, although several are hidden in xTray (Litestep system tray module). Quite a few of these come recommended through the DC forums :)
In no particular order:

Hidden:
GBM Agent - Genie Backup Manager
SetPoint - Logitech Mouse software
Earthwatch - Wallpaper utility
KatMouse - Scroll wheel fixer. So I can scroll any window under the mouse pointer, not just the active. I feel severely crippled without this one.
Bluetooth something - for whenever I want to sync phone-computer

not hidden:
Website Watcher - Autowatch enabled so I don't spend all my time browsing sites that aren't updated anyway
FavMenu - AHK script with shortcuts to frequently used folders, integrated with Total Commander
Process Tamer - you know this one
FARR - this one, too
KeePass - Stores passwords so I don't need to remember them all
Locate - Searching database of files on my HDs
Opera - browser
ArsClip - Clipboard manager
RMClock - Watches CPU temp and manages the dual core cpu
Avast! - Antivirus software
custom AHK script with hotkeys etc

Sure thing, mouser:

missing subtitles at the end
HelpDesk(HD):Did you read the manual?
User(U): Manual?
HD:Yes, it's supposed to come with a manual.
U:Oh, yeah! But there you have it... the same problem again. Can't open it!
HD:No... I guess we should've thought of that.

General Software Discussion / Re: Drupal is f*cked

e107 is a lightweight CMS, with tons of plugins. The forum plugin may not be the most featureful, but this is still an excellent CMS.

Does anyone know of a similar tool to FinePrint and Clickbook that is FREE?

It doesn't need to have all the features in these apps, but have similar capabilities...

yes, it's a long-shot, but I'd much appreciate it :)

Yesterday, my readiness to be rid of the annoying startup nag screen exceeded my willingness to wait for them any longer. So after waiting a week for them to respond, I ended up just buying the software, making the time and effort I put into the URL submission a complete waste of time.

Ken
Maybe this is their strategy  :o

General Software Discussion / Re: Help needed to repair XP (Q: 01)
« on: April 07, 2007, 03:17 AM »
Haven't you got the original XP disc? I can't see why you couldn't just use that to boot and try to repair the XP install and if that doesn't work, reinstall the whole damn thing. If you've got an image of the disc, you'd probably be able to keep settings for your most important apps.

(Btw, you're not the only one with XP problems. I haven't got major probs like you, but there are small things every now and then which are pretty annoying to have to troubleshoot all the time. I used Win2k for 5-6 years before with only a couple of minor problems and now XP for 3 months with troubleshooting all the time. I'm considering a complete reinstall... *cue Linux-zealots*)

The sum of it is that you never know just how good or bad a product is until you've tried it yourself...

942
Oh, no... now I need to come up with an idea for a FARR plugin AND learn to code :'(

jk, I can't wait to see some cool plugins born :)

Twelve Monkeys
Excellent film!

I'm really fascinated by anything to do with time-traveling, and this is by far the best movie I've seen on the subject!!

Post New Requests Here / Re: Auto Correct like in MS Word
« on: April 04, 2007, 12:12 PM »
You could try skrommel's AutoClip: https://www.donation.../index.html#AutoClip

It doesn't involve the Word autocorrect list, but at least it's supposed to provide an easy way to add new words.

still one step to go to be as user friendly as Launchy ;) (but much more powerfull ;))
the ability to search without the consecutive letters

when i want to launch, say the power calculator (microsoft powertoys)
with launchy i can type : pw
or to launch my favorite game, warcraft 3 Frozen Throne, i just type : fz
and believe me it makes a huge difference

I have no idea if this is possible, easy/hard, ... i would just love it ! (of course i guess you would make it an option !)
couldn't you use aliases for this? I don't know how launchy does this, but it sounds like it might potentially result in an enormous amount of "false positives"... How exactly do you avoid this in Launchy?

946
I still have Locate installed - even more permanently since I discovered a plugin for Total Commander. Locate + TC is twice the speed :) http://www.ghisler.c...iewtopic.php?t=14087
It's an awesome combination!

Locate is super for its use, but not really the same category as GDS, WDS and copernic, as has been said a few times now ;)

948
Many of these things are already embedded in X1 or Copernic. So, *maybe* FARR could be made to send search terms and arguments in X1 and/or Copernic ? Or would it be better to have a more autonomous FARR ?

personally i think this is a very good idea, like plugin for farr that can ask x1/copernic/googledesktop/windowsdesktop to search for stuff and return results to farr window.
Oh, yes please!! Would be a fantastic plugin!!

Living Room / Re: Good Video Editing Software? Is there any?
« on: March 31, 2007, 04:27 AM »
Not to hijack the thread, but I would like to know some free alternatives, too. Currently I use Windows Movie Maker, which is fine for personal use, but I'd like to check out some more advanced apps.

I'm not a programmer, but I'm definitely a Tool fan! I also listen to NIN and A Perfect Circle to name a few.
