General Software Discussion / Re: Irfanview4 released
« on: May 01, 2007, 03:24 AM »
Thanks, Curt. I actually use OpenExpert from BaxBex, but haven't even noticed that Irfanview extension. Will be very useful!

And just to add my 2 cents, Irfanview is by far my favourite image viewer. Faster than Xnview and Faststone, and all the necessary features.

You can also use the wonderful LaunchBar Commander by Mouser on a USB stick too. :) Thats what I use with the launchbar minimized as a menu.
Oh, yeah! That's a great idea. Why didn't I think of that sooner. I suppose all of mousers apps are portable :)

903
Tekzel, I'm with you there, non-U3 PortableApps is the way I want to go too. I wasn't too impressed with the PA Launcher, but PStart is exactly what I need from a portable launcher, and with the little tool PathSync, I can synchronize important files!

Let me be the first to suggest the excellent WinMerge! :P

mouser wrote 21/2: i think everyone is agreed now that there should be a feature freeze, which basically means my efforts now will be going into stability and bugfixing, so we should have a public release at the very very latest march 7.

What happened to the public release?  :o
It got postsponed :P

Speaking of a public release, though: what about some sort of a feature freeze soon, mouser? I know there are several excellent suggestions for new features, but maybe it's time to waive those for now, and just fix any remaining bugs for a full release? New features could always be added later.

Fine review, zridling!

For anyone with relatively minor sync needs, I recommend the tiny utility PathSync. The installer is only 101kb but PathSync is excellent for stuff like syncing files between portable drives and regular drives. It is not as feature packed and advanced as Super Flexible File Synchronizer, but does its job well.

You can get winrar 3.51 for free, just look here for how-to -> http://homemade-tuto...r-license-v-351.html

Well, I took the plunge and uninstalled U3, and unless there's some significant improvement with that system, I'll stick with regular portability :)

The autorun hasn't worked for me in quite a while (I suspect there's a conflict with the shell I'm running, Litestep, since autorun works when explorer is shell), but I use the excellent service USBDLM (USB Drive Letter Manager) to take care of the USB drives on my system (pen drives and external hard drives), and that also fixes autorun! I don't know yet if my university supports autorun.inf from pen drives, but if it doesn't it's still a small sacrifice.

But please continue with arguments or tips for portable apps in general :)

I use Movie Collector. It does have it's limitations (the major one for me, is no multi-disc support. I think this is because it's focused on Movies, not DVDs, but this is a much wanted feature, and I'm hopeful that it gets added eventually).

I used a free app (actually donation-ware) called DVD Collector, which had some fantastic features coming in the 2.0 betas, but development suddenly stopped :'( The latest full version is 1.0.2 and can be found here: http://crunchymedia.com/

If development was started again, I'd ditch Movie Collector in a second, even though I've paid for it. (Got Website Watcher covering crunchymedia.com, but I'm not holding my breath for updates...).

So I just bought a U3 smart pen drive (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U3 and http://www.u3.com/) thinking that I need a bit of a portable "office" for university and maybe using others' computers. Before buying it I only scratched the surface of that U3 stuff, and thought it sounded excellent. Now I'm not so sure... Not that it's bad or anything, but I'm not sure whether there's any real benefit to running my portable software U3 style or just "regular portable" (like http://portableapps.com/).

some Pros:
Autorun when inserted. Since U3 involves mounting two partitions, one of them is a virtual CD-rom drive with CD autoplay features, that'll start the U3 launcher on the other regular flash partition. (read above links for better explanation)
Compressed format. Not that important, but space on the flash drive is saved for other things. With 4 gigs of space, I don't know if a couple hundred kb's matter ;)
With an AHK script, most apps can be "U3ized"Take a look at U3Helper!

some Cons:
Needs two drive letters. While this is no problem on my home system, it can be a problem on a university or other "networked" areas, where the system might not allow more than one drive letter for inserted flash drives. I know the place I study gives me problems with this, thus making the drive pretty much unusable  :(
Needs to uncompress to run. While compression may save space on the drive, I think it makes all apps a wee bit slower since it needs to decompress them to fixed drive to run.

Since I've only recently started using this stuff, these lists are small, but I'd like other's input as well.

Both pros and cons with the U3 system and/or the "regular" portable solution are very welcome!

911
how can I get the Regcare license key I need it !!! plz!
Probably through Regcares website, which this isn't :tellme:

912
Seems this is Donationware, too :)

913
May be useful! I'm still considering whether there is any real point in the U3 smart drive stuff, and I'll make a topic on it soon.

Mouser,

Along with the clip itself, CHS saves the date and the program the data was clipped from.  Where the program is a browser, would it be possible to have CHS save the URL as well?

Thanks...
I support that idea! Maybe this is something that suits the Notes-feature I understand is planned for CHS?

a list of which apps you run on startup would be a good start to troubleshoot. Autoruns from sysinternals (google it) shows you everything that starts when your computer boots

yes, I suppose it would be a good idea to make both single/double click optional AND pop-up/main window optional.

Finished Programs / Re: DONE: sync single files HD <-> USB stick
« on: April 20, 2007, 04:21 AM »
I made it! :D

I'm not checking if drive letters changed (yet?), just checking if the destination path exists on the USB drive (using the letter it always gets on my PC so far).

It checks for the existence of that destination path every x minutes and updates the file I want to have updated there.

I'm looking for something similar. Care to post your AHK code, brotherS?

Another question is there any tool that works like autohotkey and is cross paltform.

now that is a good question!!

you might look into something like python.
this could possibly be a place to start looking. I know it's for windows, but it's in python: pywinauto -> https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=7971.0

Ability to configure the length of the pop-up menu preview.
i believe you can do this now -- see quick pop up options.
Hmmm... either I'm missing something, or you misunderstood. I know I can limit the length of the 'Title size' of clips, but normally I don't use titles or don't assign them to regular production clips, and so the preview become too long. See screenshot below:

I just recently got to play with CHS again, and it's great! A lot better than the last time I tried it, and it's now a candidate for my favourite clipboard manager. I currently use Arsclip, but lets see how CHS turns out... ;)

anyway, I've got a few requests. I apologize if these are already posted or in the todo-list (or I've missed them in the app :-[ ), but I thought I'd mention them:
* Handle images as well as text! Although this isn't the feature I use most in Arsclip, it's very handy from time to time. I suppose this one's already requested, but that's understandable ;)
* Handle files copied to clipboard There should be a configurable file size limit (applies to the previous request as well).
* Ability to configure the length of the pop-up menu preview. It's too wide currently. I think it should be configurable either by width or by characters. Don't know what makes most sense... Hovering an item should ideally show a tooltip with the full clip.
* Ability to configure tray icon clicking behaviour. (ouch, not a very good sentence, but I'm tired) I would prefer the main window appearing on a double click of the icon.

I did have a few other requests, but I'll post them when I've got a nights sleep and used CHS a bit more.

Windows Commander (as it was called back then)

I had that WAAAYYYY back in the day too (I'll guess 98...). I think at least. I used it to change the timestamps on my mp3 files.

P.S. does 9 years ago count as "WAAAYYYY back in the day"?
When we're speaking about computers, yes, that's WAAAYYYY back!

Meanwhile, I'm sitting here exceptionally happy with Total Commander and it's great price and great developer.

It's quotes like the following from TC-developer Christian Ghisler that makes me happy I discovered Windows Commander (as it was called back then) and was the very first software I paid for (yes, I downloaded cracks, keygens, etc. when I was younger.).

Ghisler's replies upon users' request for a donation option or alternative to re-registering:
Btw, it's really not neccessary to register again just to support me! You should better spend this money to support the victims of the Tsunami flood, or the hunger in Africa...

In fact there is no donation scheme. Believe me, we (my brother and I = C. Ghisler & Co.) earn enough with new registrations so we don't need to charge for updates.

What if you cannot afford the TC licence? We tolerate the use of the unregistered version by private users who cannot afford the program. However, we expect that companies who make real money buy the software when they use it, and also private users who can afford it (where the licence wouldn't take a big part of the salary, as in some countries of eastern Europe or Asia now). This isn't yet written in the licence in the program, but will be written there in the near future.

I'm not slagging off DOpus, which by the looks of it is a fantastic file manager, but I'm a bit surprised at the high price of upgrades. I would assume that there are many DOpus users, possibly even more than TC (I have no clue), and it's surprising that with the small team behind it they still need to charge for major upgrades.

But that'll be my last Total Commander promotion in this thread ;)
