Docoto Defense - DonationCoder.com Game in Development
« on: June 14, 2007, 06:59 PM »
Some of you may have heard of the $10,000 Game Contest put on by the good folks at MyDreamRPG. For those that haven't, or that forgot about it, let me summarize a few of the details:

I'm here to announce that I officially entered a game tentatively titled Docoto Defense into the contest on May 21st. Docoto Defense is an amalgamation of the words DonationCoder Tower Defense. So what does this all mean? It means that the DonationCoder.com Games Division is working on a Tower Defense style game that, to be a valid entrant in the game contest, will be finished and ready for release by May 2008 at the latest!

This game is going to be unique from other TD games because it will feature single player quest modes, multiplayer (cooperative and competitive modes), have both defensive and offensive elements, and will focus on user created content. People will be able to create their own levels, maps, units, etc., customizing many features of the game.

Mouser is very involved in helping to design the game and Nudone has agreed to help out with some artwork, but I'd like to make a request to the DonationCoder community for more support. I could especially use the help of those with artistic abilities, musical/sound effect abilities, and website design. Even if you don't have those abilities or don't have the time to help out you can still contribute with one of the fundamental ideas behind this entire community: Donations.

The game is still in the early design stages, so I'm sorry to say I don't have more cool screen captures to show off, but you can follow the game's progress at the Development Blog.

I wish I was creative - the best I can do is cheer a bit, and perhaps drink a beer for moral support :)

So this was the extramegasuper secret DonationCoder game... or you have another one under wraps.

I could especially use the help of those with artistic abilities, musical/sound effect abilities, and website design.

Artistic abilities? Nah. Musical/sound effects abilities? Nah (unless you're talking about constructive criticism). Website design? Nah, but I know how to use Composer. Donations? Probably... I could be a tester if you need one, though.

I could be a tester if you need one, though.

Testers are not yet needed, but I will be sure to let everyone here know when they are. In that regard, I'll let you folks know about some of the specific needs as they arise. If you'd like to be a little proactive, please read the Points List to see how the contest judges the game and maybe you'll find an area or two that you can help out with.

Right now the blog could be improved with a better theme. If you have skill customizing WordPress themes or just know of some good ones that are already out there, I'd be happy to hear from you.

From what I was reading, one way anyone can help would be to post blogs that would add awareness of the contest.  Also, assisting in writing the weekly blogs here and the monthly ones in GarageGames site would free you up to do more programming...

I may be able to assist with Web Design, though my full schedule would probably prevent me from creating it myself.  My skills are in XHTML and CSS.  None of that fancy ASP/JSP/PHP/etc. stuff, at least not yet.  Never the less, it could be a start.  A friend of mine asked me to assist with his pages and I built him the one here if you want a look at some of my work.  It is somewhat basic and was influenced heavily by his previous design (he didn't want to deviate from the original design, just lighten it from a black background and bring it up to date with XHTML and CSS instead of HTML 3 codework).  However, it does show some of what I am capable of.

Ideally, if my help were to be used, I would work with someone who knows PHP so we can finish faster, with better result, and I can learn a bit in the process.  Any takers?

It is true that the blogs are time consuming, but I find the weekly blogs to be very helpful in letting me review what I've done and where I'm going. I wouldn't mind having others be more involved behind the scenes so they can contribute to the blog, however, I feel that it is a good experience for me to participate in the weekly blog. The monthly update at GarageGames is more like a monthly summary, and indeed someone could help in taking the main points from my weekly blogs and summarizing them into an entry, then I could take that text and add anything else I felt was worth mentioning and post it. That would certainly help.

My skills are in XHTML and CSS.

I could certainly use the help in having a site designed for the game. XHTML and CSS sound perfect. I think that WordPress could actually be all the architecture I need to have multiple pages and to be able to easily manage content, but it would need a good customized theme.

This is just an update to let everyone know that I posted a new entry on the Docoto Defense Blog. It's short and sweet this time. Or at least just short.  ;D

And steeladept, I'm writing a response to your PM right now.

I just wrote up the monthly GarageGames blog entry. It basically sums up the relevant parts of my June blog entries. Read it here:

You might find a concept image or two in there.

a t-shirt sounds good - i think it would look better with the blue binary background removed though.

I don't know, I like it. What background would you have instead?  Either way, it will certainly be a predominate part of the web page if I have a say in it. :D

i really only meant i'd take the background out if it was printed on a t-shirt - i just think a solid rectangle would look a bit odd, i.e. it wouldn't look like it had been designed for a t-shirt - which it wasn't.

i don't mind revising it so it's more t-shirt friendly. of course, if no one agrees then i'll just go with the flow.

maybe just changing the background from a rectangle to a circle would be enough.

yeah i think it would be nice to see what it looks like on the shirt without the background and that just being transparent region.  you are right it would look more professional that way.

Personally, I'd love the blue binary background on a t-shirt!

maybe a combination...

fade out the edges of the blue background so it gradually moves to transparent.

binary on top fades out at a slower rate and maybe has a random edge to it so it doesn't look like a rectangle.

kind of like as if the edges of the rectangle had been washed away.

i suppose i better do a few mockups.

Well, I actually like the rectangle part - but a version without the background and some "mushy fady" versions gives people ChoiceTM - often a good thing :)
