Universal Extractor, though i love it to pieces, is not an archive manager. It uses 7zip for most of the standard archive formats, and various other unpackers/decompressors for installers and non-standard formats. Universal Extractor is merely a front-end for these tools (and a bloody good one at that).

I just downloaded the newest version of alzip, and i have 2 suggestions regarding speed extractor:
1 - the one i mentioned in this post, which i think i didn't express correctly.
2 - have an option for "don't open explorer after decompress", because i don't use explorer and find that a bit anoying

Regarding #2 - That preference is set in the regular extraction window. Just uncheck it there. (I need to double check on that though...)

I'll have a look at #1 again on Monday - sorry - a bit busy at the moment. Hell season is here.

...as WinRAR has the same ability. When you're going to compress something, go to the "Files" tab and check "Put each file to separate archive". Pretty useful feature for those long ROM zipping sessions . Although I don't know if it's capable of doing what sri was asking for in that thread

Lashiec, i'm also a big fan of WinRAR but the feature you mentioned is for creating separate archives based on filename while sri was looking for solution to create separate archives based on filesize, hence the uniqueness of SpinZip..

There´s another one that could get very important in the future missing in the list: Nanozip
It has the best compression power and its goal is envolving to create new and higher compression algorithms compared to others. Some testfiles have become the half of 7zip in ultra - depending on the data.

Curt: where's that from? I don't see the Danish distributors, nor RarLabs own shop listing such addons? WinRAR has been free lifetime upgrades up to now, and that's a lot of years. Not saying they might not move away from it eventually, I personally don't believe in "lifetime upgrades", but... well

I went digging through the way back machine because I was sure it used to say lifetime updates for free -- quite interesting.

If you look at rarlabs.com, you can see that back in Nov 2009 we have

which was changed in Dec 2009 to

Better compression, easier use, lower price. All extras included.

and from the list of rar benefits from Jun 2009

- You also receive the benefit of a life-time use of the WinRAR archiver. No upgrade fee to pay. When a new release is made, simply download and install, your license is valid for life.

this line is gone in Jan 2010.

On win-rar.com (the official distributor for rar software) we have in Feb 2009

* WinRAR gives you all future UPDATES for FREE! Not like the competition that will make you pay again every one or two years.

But in Mar 2009 that line is gone.

If we look at the knowledge base articles on win-rar.com, we can see that the one about updates from Nov 2006 saying

Q: Do I need to pay again to use an upgrade?

A: You can UPGRADE for FREE!

It has always been our policy not to charge
our customers purchased RAR once, you will be able
to enjoy all further versions completely free.

was removed. The same is the case with the knowledge base article about their license model

If you are not a registered user, please register to encourage the author to further develop and improve RAR, making possible new RAR releases!
You gain the right to use all future RAR releases in the registered mode.

So what does all this mean?

I have no idea, but it could be an indication that all the annoying links to dubious looking "pc performance optimizers" they put on their pages are not generating enough income, so they are silently trying to remove the free updates

At any rate, like Josh said at least the 4.0 version works fine with my old key.

Yep, does seem like they might want to pull the plug on lifetime licenses; can't say I blame them, but it's a bit sad nonetheless. If they pull the free upgrades, I'm moving to 7-zip, it's mature enough by now imho. It doesn't have as many nice commandline options as rar.exe, but I'll live; haven't needed NTFS permissions or alternative data streams in archives, either.

As long as I can extract .rar files, subsequent packaging can be done in another tool, and having a truly open format is a definite bonus.

Yeah, I might have to do that too. 7-Zip does seem like the best bet at the moment, even though I dislike the GUI (been a while since I used that last though, could have changed).

The 7z GUI is still very limited, but frankly I almost only use WinRAR's "extract here" and "extract to" context menu folders (when not using a more specialized RAR extractor like SCuN), and "add files to archive..." - and once in a blue moon I browse through an archive looking for a particular file.

Haven't seen any mention of this anywhere, except for Jibz' investigations - definitely no emails or anything. Can't remember when I purchased WinRAR, but it's the first app I bought when I finally got a VISA card and could shop online.

I still like ALZip. I was disappointed though when it changed to shareware after I left.

I think there are better options to make money to pay the people that work on the software and help keep software free for people, but oh well. Not my call anymore.

One feature of WinZip that I really liked was the Checkout feature - small writeup here.
I don't recall seeing another (free) zip handling tool with that feature.

Still, I came across Nirsoft's ZipInstaller utility recently. Still need to see how practical it is.
