Launchy users please stand up
« on: October 23, 2006, 10:36 AM »
I installed this thingy several days ago, but it still didn't index my Start Menu in full (i.e. it can't find Excel when I type it's name). Any suggestions on what to do with it?

One option is to install our own program instead:  Find and Run Robot :P

ps.
don't take this as me saying you shouldn't use Launchy - use what you like best - i just mention Find and Run Robot since i'm not sure if you know about it yet.

Well, probably that's an option.

Tried this one. I'm really missing an ability to configure it to use a Win-key combination for activation.

I use Launchy.  I have no problems with it ... it works with Excel and I use Winkey+C to launch it.  I also use it to open folders in My Documents directory.  I love it because its fast and is very simple to configure and use.

Tim, are you running your Windows from under admin or limited-user? I just filed the bug report and am wondering if that matters.

Good god, I think Find and Run Robot is my favorite program in the history of the world.  It is a required install on both my PC at home and workstation at work.  I thought I wanted a win+key combo to run it when I first started using it, but I VERY quickly got used to using the break key.  When I found a program that let you remap Win+key combos (qliner on sourceforge) I tried mapping FARR to a win+key combo but I used it once.  Went right back to break.

FARR for president!

I like Find and Run Robot, but it's missing Folder search support, Winkey support, and it's cache is too slow for my taste.  I love the features of it, but Launchy is drop dead simple and has the main features I want.  It's far from as sophisticated as FARR, but I like it.  I was using SlickRun, but I don't like the fact that  it doesn't have an index feature, you have to manually setup the shortcuts.  I was using that for about 6 months, but got tired of having to deal with the huge bug in the beta version that deletes your Magic Words.

Well, like I mentioned I don't need winkey support, and I am glad FARR does not index.  FARR is so damn fast that indexing would only marginally increase speed and I like the instantaneous updating that realtime search allows.  If Mouser added indexing to FARR as an option, I personally would never turn it on.  I can't even think of a feature it needs for me, it pretty much does everything I need perfectly.

I think the main reason I love Launchy is that it's smart from the start.   I type in "pf" and it figures out that I want "program files."  I didn't setup an alias, it just figures it out.  I type in audiobooks and it knows that "audio books" is the directory where I want to go to.  It's not a perfect program, but it's working for me ... with minimal effort on my part.
