N.A.N.Y. 2020: How can I be of service to you?
« on: November 07, 2019, 08:46 AM »
Hello there!

As I've been invited to join N.A.N.Y. 2020 by mouser (thank you!) I would like to use this opportunity to ask if you guys have a program bigger than a "snack" you would like me to code?

My aim is being of most service to the community so if you have an idea for a medium-sized program you'd like to have implemented, feel free to shoot it below :)

Windows/Linux is OK.

Cheers!

Weeell, I have been long searching for a really nice code-snippet keeper.  Right now I'm using an ancient one called CodeBank because I can't find anything quite like it that is newer.  I don't want any online connections - just local storage.  If you are interested, do download CodeBank and try it out a bit first.  The website doesn't work anymore, so here's a link to the installer which I've uploaded to my server.

I've tried CherryTree as a snippet keeper, and it seems suitable, but is quite clunky and unusual in it's handling.
Code Vault was another alternative I've tried and sort of liked, but it lacks features.

Here's what I like about CodeBank:
  • completely customizable tree
  • separate comments panel with auto-hyperlink detection - great for notes and links
  • autohotkey syntax  (it *doesn't have this; I suck it up and use the syntax colouring for javascript)
  • you can have multiple "codebanks" each dedicated to a particular topic and open them all simultaneously if you like.
  • choose different syntaxes for folders which are inherited by new pages, or choose specific syntax for a page

But CodeBank has a few issues and hasn't been developed for over 10 years.
Here is a screenshot

And add to "codebank" online sync to different computer.

I have just added my suggestion, rest is on you.
BTW I use www.resoph.com/ResophNotes/Welcome.html for simple codes storing with online sync., but it has its limitation too.

Anand

Have you tried Lintalist, whose author is a DC member? I think it is impressive.

Yeah, I know there are others out there, and I've tried over two dozen of them and haven't found anything quite like CodeBank.  If I could get the source code, I'd try to work on it myself, even if it is in Paschal (I'm pretty sure of it).

Well, glad to be of service.  Although you didn't really have many ideas to choose from...

There are two other ideas that I have, however.
One is a game - I have a DC thread about it here.
The other is a program for managing production of a magazine.

@BGM:
Just correcting what I wrote above:
@BGM: CodeBank v2.1.2.100 (June 9, 2011 is still available via:
https://files.downlo...=CodeBank2_Setup.exe
Refer Wayback: http://web.archive.o...5/http://zeraha.org/
Out of interest, I downloaded that file and ran the install.
Confuzzling result:
Which is the "Current/latest" version?:
  • Installer says: v2.0.1.74
  • "About" says: v2.1.2.95
  • Notes for June 9, 2011 (in Wayback) say: v2.1.2.100
So I downloaded the installer kindly provided by you (@BGM) at http://www.sspxusa.org/temp/CodeBank2Setup.exe
@BGM's CodeBank installer says: v2.1.2.100
"About" says: v2.1.2.100

So you seem to have the latest version, indicating that at least some (if not all) of the sites that CodeBank formerly used to distribute the software have only earlier versions of it - which I guess is what you had probably(?) already discovered.
Thanks for providing that latest version anyway. Interesting proggy.

lainB, yes, I am sure I have the latest version.  I got it from zehara.org when the site was up and kept checking back there over time to see if he had updated it or answered any of my comments (he never did, in fact).  If you begin to use, just watch out for when you create a new folder at the end of the tree and then try and move it, it will cause a memory allocation error and the app will crash and you'll lose anything not saved.

But I think I am unwittingly hijacking the thread here...  (this isn't my thread, you know)

One of the hardest things can be choosing WHAT to program.. These days there is so much out there it's hard to think of something that hasn't been done (well).
publicdomain: I encourage you to keep looking for ideas until you find one you can implement well, in the given timeframe, that might have some use (not be done better by other apps).  Not an easy task, I'll admit!

I'm looking for a hotstring/textpander software.
Texter from lifehacker is my favorite choice and still almost works great. But...
  • It doesn't support unicode
  • It lack of some features(which i will talk next)
  • Its in aged ahk codes and not under maintained since 2007

What I need/want.
I hope the UI(hotstring management) can be list mode but not tabs to much more convenient and make sense.

It has normal/text(text, %c--clipboard, %ds--date, %t--time, %|--cursor position....etc) and script(^v--ctrl+v, something included by{}, eg. {enter}--enter...etc) modes
I hope you can maybe add more build in parameters like those above to extend its features.
For me the most wanted features is to add multi clipboard contend support. For example
somecmdprog -i %c -o %c1 -p %c2
Thus i can copy three content then execute this hotsting one time to run the cmd. this is extreme helpful in some conditions.
Or maybe you can add some build-in/user-defined parameter to choose from the menu directly.

That's my opinion, I still have some other ideas to add-in.

;added time:  2019/11/13 21:58
Texter don't have description section(Which is also useful to what I'm gonna mention next. SHARED hotstrings). It's useful when you have too much hotstring(eg. ffmpeg, youtube-dl...) and don't figure out what it really does.

Maybe you can add some community or online shared resource service support. So people can share their USEFUL hotstrings to others. like JACK's magick hotstring packs, TOM's nircmd packs... This should be fun and make the usage of cmd programs much easier.

Sorry for my English.

Hello chashnniel, do feel free to add a new thread on the new requests section! (It sounds interesting to take )

As I begin doing this N.A.N.Y. program, the name has been altered a bit to pdCodeVault.

I'm so glad you have interest in this
For now, we can keep on this thread here. Or maybe the site admin can add this to a new thread.
Or simply you can start a new thread yourself, you can describe the concept/idea of pdCodeVault as you like, there is no any rights need to worry about.
Take your time.

I'm finally home & ready to engage on my "coding spree" :)

This is my first N.A.N.Y. but certainly not the last, as my dream is devoting full-time to developing for the public domain.

(Ye olde brain lights-up when I do public domain development and I pretty much think it is a reflection that comes straight from the soul, given it directly helps the fellows who appreciate it the most)

It's all connected!

For me the most difficult thing is focus the mind in a target.

So if someone else have the same problem will understand me when trying to acomplish a task step by step.

I need a step by step guiding program. configurable.
We all know project management software or wonderful software like tasklists. Or Freemind. I use it !!!!!

In spanish we usually say : "los árboles no te dejan ver el bosque". --- The trees don't let you see the forest . ....

That's my case, so in the execution mode I will like to manage the project with the main phase. Even more phases if as usual you  can begin from several places.....

But in the execution mode you only can see the makeable targets from the point or situation you are. So in that cases where I am confused, or my mind goes freely I will have a strong support to go straight to the target.

Do you know an app to do this in windows ?

The best I have used (for years) is MS Project.
It enables you to use two types of view:
  • Gantt charts (conventional) - useful for most small-to-medium and large projects.
  • "Network" charts (similar to PERT) - useful for getting the bigger picture in really big projects.
It also enables costing and fairly sophisticated resource planning/utilisation.

Takes a bit of learning to be able to fully utilise the software, but, if you've ever studied Critical Path Analysis or PERT methods, then you're likely already half-way there (able to put approx 50% of the product to good use at the outset).

I always thought the old MacProject was superb (ahead of its time), but I think MS Project has probably long since eclipsed it.

Thanks IanB. I am investigating what I want :

Task Dependencies - the missing piece
Dependent tasks should block completion
Completing a task when dependent task is not complete
Milestone can be marked complete despite incomplete dependencies

Sub-tasks: The task is broken down into smaller steps. When those smaller steps (sub-tasks) are completed, the task is completed. For example, preparing a meal may involve preparing several courses, and each of these courses may have multiple elements that need to be cooked or prepared. Once all sub-tasks are complete, the main task is complete too.
Pre-requisites: A task requires some other task(s) to be completed before it can start. For example, we can't start baking a pie until it has been assembled. Once all pre-requisites are complete, the task can start.

So I want to filter to see only the pre-requisites tasks.

Hide dependent tasks until dependency is completed is another way to express or say it....

Microsoft Project is not free. I have seen that libre office don't have a project section software....
