How to move forward with an idea?
« on: June 09, 2018, 05:07 PM »
Hello!

I have a revolutionary idea for a medical device. I have researched its components and how it would work, although it is in very early stages as an idea.

How can I get help to develop it further and maybe commercialise it?

I don't have any money to invest, but I am willing to give percentage of my rights to have it researched further.

Any idea?

Thanks!

This is probably not the place to get help with such.  You might want to look at patent and inventor type sites.  I know that there are people/companies that help people through the process, but I'm not sure of the requirements nor any recommendations.

In my opinion, a good healthy first step is to realize you are almost certainly not going to be able to successfully commercialize it or be able to do anything with it that makes you any money, fame, etc.
That's just the reality of the world -- especially our current age, where information and ideas are so easy to distribute and explain.
The reality is that even when one has a truly great idea, there are most likely dozens or hundreds of people who have also had it, long before you, and are in a better position (monetarily, connection wise, etc.) to bring it to fruition.

That's not to say I am suggesting you not pursue it.  Only that you do so eyes open to the reality of the situation, and placing less of a hope that your idea alone is going to be worth much if anything.  If it's important to you I think you will have to embrace the idea of taking a much bigger role in actually bringing your idea to life and taking it from idea to implementation and marketing and promotion.  The idea is almost certainly not worth anything, but a person who can recognize a good idea and follow through with the hard work to bring it to life is.

Well, Kickstarter may help you. But keep in mind Mouser's advise.

Kickstarter helps artists, musicians, filmmakers, designers, and other creators find the resources and support they need to make their ideas a reality. To date, tens of thousands of creative projects — big and small — have come to life with the support of the Kickstarter community.

^ this idea would need to be protected, so kickstarter is probably not the best idea.

As said your location is relevant.
I have a friend/acquaintance here in Germany who had a very simple idea that hugely increased the safety of working with ladders in certain situations. He wanted to patent the idea -- I did up drawings for the idea, which he used in his proposal. It turned out that in Germany there was no need to get a patent to protect his idea. Tbh I couldnt tell you what exactly he needed to get, and it's probably not relevant to you in your location anyways.
Because his idea involved something very helpful to e.g. the Fire Dept/Brigade, he got a lot of support from officials, and eventually got involved with a company who paid for developing prototypes etc. in return for a very large percentage of eventual profits.

It looks like it will be ten years between idea, and actually making any real money off of it -- from what he's been told it's often a lot longer (if ever). I know that getting a patent is more work too (and note he did put a *lot* of effort into the process).

Kickstarter is a bit more than a place to get funds.  He'd have to be able to articulate the product, create the campaign, and most importantly, deliver the product.  If he's asking on here how to get it done, then Kickstarter is a bad choice.
