DC on Discord :O
« on: December 03, 2017, 11:26 PM »
So...after months of bugging him, I finally convinced mouser to get on Discord!!!  :o

If you want to come join us on the DC Discord server - the link is https://discord.gg/9J4mHfF

(Discord is a text and voice chat app, available for all platforms - it's kinda like IRC 2.0)

Lots of features - DC Forum RSS feed, and voice chats with yours truly (and whoever else wants to say hi!) are all part of this :D

Did I mention it's better than IRC? haha

The link again is: https://discord.gg/9J4mHfF

If you don't have discord, just quickly signup, download if for your system (or even use it in your browser), and then you should be on the server! (If not, after you register, just click the link again!)

Heh. I created a DC Discord server a long time ago. Probably a year or two by now. But no one ever joined it (and stayed for more than an hour or so).

Of course, that was mostly my own fault for not really "advertising" that it existed. But I did mention it in the IRC channel a few times. ;D

I'd want to write on IRC, but I can't, as by default the 'voice' flag is off, so I can't even ask there to turn it on... :-[

Seems like the best approach would be to create a discord<->irc bridge bot so conversations on either show up on both places. That way you avoid splitting the audience between both platforms (or you end up with even less people to talk to).

We had a Discord<>IRC Bridge (The remains of that are still on the Discord server in #donationcoder-on-irc) but it seemed completely pointless paying for it to stay online (VPS) on the basis that the only person who ever talks on the DC IRC recently, is the forum bot, lol.

Considering we have a fairly large community of people, it surprises me that not that many want to come and chat in real-time about various topics :(

Honestly, I'd prefer Discord to be the option over IRC (more modern features, always connected, etc etc), but in all honesty...if everybody chose IRC for DC...I would be happy anyway...I'd just like to see more interaction between members of the community XD

I changed my mind and added the bridge...now it doesn't matter if you're on IRC or Discord...We can see you from either end!  :D

Um, I'm no expert, but it seems to me that this technology may have been superseded somewhat by newer technology, several years ago (on August 14, 2013) - by what seems to be the stuff of nightmares for the NSA and other Five Eyes members - Telegram.
Includes: (some of this is from memory)
  • Requires no server, just client devices.
  • $FREE "forever".
  • Ability to support Channel providers by voluntary donations and/or subscriptions.
  • Security based on your unique phone number and passphrase (similar in that regard to the Japanese LINE social network system).
  • Works on various clients:
    • Android.
    • Windows and Windows Portable.
    • macOS
    • MacApp Store version
    • Linux 32-bit
    • Linux 64-bit
  • Absolutely secure + private end-to-end encryption. with distributed Cloud storage.
  • Text messaging with some RTF capability.
  • Voice (audio) telephony.
  • Voice (audio) messaging.
  • Concepts of Channels, Discussions, Groups, and social/business networking, secret chats.
  • Dynamic links to URLs, with content partially shown in posts containing those links.
  • Posts are left as editable, for a period, or can be replaced (with current date) by new posts.
  • Your own posts can be permanently removed by you, for yourself only (e.g., to remove clutter in a thread), or for all others also.
  • Files that you download from links or upload to links (documents, images, audio files, audio-video files, compressed files) don't seem to have a limit on size (though I could be wrong) and are stored encrypted in your Cloud Account and regarded as your permanent property. That means only you can delete them, or they will be expunged if you don't use your account for a preset period of your choice (up to 12 months).
  • You can "clean" these files from your client device's Telegram cache (to recover storage space), but they will remain yours in the Telegram Cloud and can be downloaded again (useful for backup and for video junkies).
  • The use of programmable "bots" (similar to Yahoo! PIPE, IFTTT).
  • etc.

I'm a big fan of Telegram, but Discord has a place and can be better for certain groups and desired features. There are things Discord is better at than Telegram. And there are things Telegram is better at than Discord.

Use the right tool for the right job.

Not sure how Telegram supersedes Discord for the majority of what people are using it for lol.

A: You don't host the Discord server...so it's really not an issue that it uses them
B: It's free...completely
C: It doesn't need any of your real details (just an email address you can access to verify your account)
D: Completely X-Platform (also available from the browser)
E: Posts are editable by the OP
F: Has Voice, Video and Screen-sharing
G: Channels with the ability to set permissions for each
H: Posts can be deleted by you (or a moderator) at any point you want.
I: Thousands (literally) of bots to choose from (or just make your own)
J: Content can be embedded (links, music, videos, GIFs, images, etc etc)

That's just the stuff I could be bothered typing.

If you're using Discord to chat, then having your stuff hidden from "the NSA" (why would you even care about that?) isn't really an issue...

So yeah, not entirely sure what point is being made  ;D

It's probably the temp mail thing - I know plenty of Germans on there haha - If you don't want to use your real email for whatever reason, then just quickly make a throwaway gmail account xD

Also, Welcome back!!!
