Google Play Store Android updates not new
« on: October 17, 2017, 01:48 PM »
I keep running into this where I go to Google Play Store and it shows Updates available under My Apps and Games.  But often I check the version and it is the same as the one already installed.  I have two Android tablets and a phone and the issue happens across all the devices.  Kind of weird.

Has anyone run into this?  It is kind of a time sink to check the version number before installs.  I do not use Auto Update because I like to pick what to update depending on the What Is New info.

Are you checking the version number both before and after "updating"? I ask because I have come across places that sometimes show your current version in the store until after you update.

Well, it still shows the current version after updating, but updating changes the current version. :P

But the real important detail is that all Android apps have a release/build version code that must be higher than the previous one for the Play Store to accept it as an update. This number can be different than the publicly displayed version number. Make sure you're comparing the correct number when checking for updates.

That is interesting.  It seems like something weird is happening because an App I updated yesterday will be in the update list today with the Last Updated date a week or more old.  I am waiting to see Rod Serling or Alfred Hitchcock make an appearance.  ;)

It hasn't happened to me; couple of phones, couple of tablets

Just think of it as Google wanting to make you feel special.

I'd clear out the cache on the phones/tablets and see if the problem persists.

Have you by any chance installed apps manually, as in downloaded the .apk? I've had this happen when I've updated apps by downloading the latest directly from the authors (mainly on xda forums).

Hmm, somehow I can hear "Church Lady" saying that on Saturday Night Live.   8)

Only those that are not available from the play store.

I regularly use All In One Cleaner, as in multiple times per day.  Somehow the store must be getting wrong info.  I wonder if it gets confused by multiple devices?  One would think not but who knows?  I have 2 Marshmallow and one Lollipop device.  Maybe this us an excuse to get a new 7" tablet with Marshmallow?  Anyone know if Marshmallow boots faster than the same device running Lollipop?  I like the 7" tablet with keyboard case but it is a real dog coming up on a cold boot.

I have two apps which update outside of the Play store or via the Play store, depends which way happens first.

I suppose if something similar is happening the Play store could be reporting an update available even though the app has already self-updated but the Google update date will be out of date.

Also it is likely the testing is done with auto update enabled.  Thanks for the replies.
