i'll start off.. i tend to fill my tray up these days..

Thebat - email client always left running.
Find&run robot - donationcoder.com software (launching apps by name)
Browsertrayswitch - donationcoder.com software (lets me keep default browser blocked when not needed)
Screenshot Captor - donationcoder.com software (taking screenshots)
Process Tamer - donationcoder.com software (tweaks process priorities)
UltraMon - for simulating multimon taskbars
Clipmate - clipboard history tool (overkill for me but haven't found one that works better)
WeatherWatcher/WeatherPulse - reports temperature (havent decided which to keep)
CallSoftPro - computer answer machine i've been evaluating
Agnitum Outpost - firewall
Nod32 - antivirus
NetTransport - records some daily radio shows for me
LogMonitor - auto timestamps and moves the radio show files
PGP Tools - encryption (don't use very much but reassuring to have)
Motherboard Monitor - tells me temperature of my cpu
Onboard Sound Tool - embaressingly i am using motherboard sound functions
VirtuaWin - virtual desktop
Filebox Extender - open/save dialog enhancer
Macro Express - macro tool
Remote Admin - remote desktop control app (for when im out of the house and need to control my computer)

TClockEx - freeware system tray clock replacement (has day, date calendar)

I use WinXP's feature to automatically hide systay icons that I never want to see (like Thunderbird's new mail notification icon) and to keep others always present. Here's what sits in my systray most often these days:

PureText: Convert any text in your clipboard to plain ASCII text with a keystroke
KeyText: Key macro and automation software
Pageant: SSH key agent for PuTTY
goScreen: Virtual desktops
TrayDay: Displays the current date, and displays a floating calendar
Bitvise Tunnelier (when running): SSH client for WinSSHD
BestCrypt: Disk encryption software
Stunnel: SSL tunneling program and log console
InCD: Nero program to use rewriteable CDs or DVDs as drives.
Apache Monitor (usually hidden): Control Apache httpd servers
HotSync: Palm synchronization software
NetTransport: Download manager
Trillian Pro: Instant Messaging
KeePass: Password manager
Workrave: RSI avoidance
PGP: Email and file encryption, etc.

And then of course there's other software the sometimes minimizes to my systray, like FeedDemon, and Windows specific things, like the Power Manager and network connection status icons.

msn messenger - chat with the locals
clipcache plus - clipboard monitor (prefer it to 'Clipmate')
ultravnc - just in case i need to access this machine from elsewhere
mbprobe - just in case my cpu decides to burn out
atnotes - makes my wallpaper look pretty with transparent notes placed on top
outpost - firewall
find and run robot - definitely beats clicking through all those menus
avg free - antivirus
samurize - displays calendar, drive space, msn messenger contacts online
file ex - good bye DlgXRSizer
hoekey - quick key shortcuts
ms activsync - pocket pc connection
taskswitchxp - looks pretty when alt+tabbing
ultramon (sometimes) - when dual display is on
directory opus - messing around with files

other programs that i seem to run about every ten minutes so they may as well be in the tray:

maxthon - browser
outlook - email
empty temp folders - clear trash and temp folders
another ultravnc - checking up on the machine in the other room

Old topic but figured I would post anyways...
I usually only have Gaim (now Pidgin) and LaunchBar Commander running in the taskbar notification bay. I use TrayIt! and have FF and Thunderbird in there when they are open, but thats about it (I gave up on startup applications a while ago). I don't run much because playing games that require more CPU speed then you have doesn't mix with running lots of programs too.

I have a bunch, although several are hidden in xTray (Litestep system tray module). Quite a few of these come recommended through the DC forums

In no particular order:

Hidden:
GBM Agent - Genie Backup Manager
SetPoint - Logitech Mouse software
Earthwatch - Wallpaper utility
KatMouse - Scroll wheel fixer. So I can scroll any window under the mouse pointer, not just the active. I feel severely crippled without this one.
Bluetooth something - for whenever I want to sync phone-computer

not hidden:
Website Watcher - Autowatch enabled so I don't spend all my time browsing sites that aren't updated anyway
FavMenu - AHK script with shortcuts to frequently used folders, integrated with Total Commander
Process Tamer - you know this one
FARR - this one, too
KeePass - Stores passwords so I don't need to remember them all
Locate - Searching database of files on my HDs
Opera - browser
ArsClip - Clipboard manager
RMClock - Watches CPU temp and manages the dual core cpu
Avast! - Antivirus software
custom AHK script with hotkeys etc

Been there, done that, called it PesterMe, and it was my N.A.N.Y. project. (to pester me to finish my real N.A.N.Y. project)

Any way, I have quite a bit in my tray, and I actually keep a text file with a list of everything, which I check every time I reboot to make sure it's all there in the tray and nothing missing. Sometimes some of the programs load, but their icons fail to appear in the tray.

From Left to Right, Top to Bottom:

WhatPulse (submits my keystroke and mouse click counts for the DonationCoder WhatPulse team)
A reminder alarm for a Post-It software note (reminding me to check GiveAwayOfTheDay)
AIM (mostly for talking to my daughter at other end of house...better than yelling)
????? (a new application I am working on)
Callwave (to receive my voicemail on my pc)
Lyrc plugin for Winamp (click to display lyrics of song currently playing)
Winamp (gotta have tunes)
Task Manager
RoboMX with Metis plugin (PeaceKeeper chatbot for my WPNP chatroom)
XChat (irc chat client)
ProtoRelay (command line utility bot to link my WPNP chatroom to an IRC channel)

amaroK - bestestest audio player ever
KOrganizer Reminder Daemon - Tasks & Schedules need to be taken care of
XChat2 - serious chatroom addiction
Skype - *curses skype to only have a stone-age-old version for linux*

usually hidden:
KMix - volume control
Beryl Manager - OSX/Vista style eye-candy for your linux desktop long before vista had it ;-)
KDE Keyboard Tool - for the rare moments in live where i need german keyboard layout
KGpg - mmmmmmm crypto
Klipper - clipboard manager, never used it :x

I keep it simple... My 512MB of mem don't allow me for much extravagance, so i have to keep everything trimmed down to the minimum.

There's:
Opera, my browser of choice,
One AutoHotkey script i made that allows me to control winamp, have global shortcuts, have the cd drive open when i turn of the computer with a CD inside, etc etc etc.
GridMove, my all-time companion

The windows wireless connection thingie.
The windows wired connection thingie.
The sound volume thingie.
The oh-so-damn-useful unplug-stuff thingie (which i never use).
FARR!!! (this one doesn't need any explanation)
msnmessenger, on which i'm "online" 24/7.
Clipboard Help+Spell, which has already saved me from losing important data a few times.
AllSnap, an app that is very lightweigth and provides for the snap windows funcionality that Windows itself should already have.

I also keep Winamp running all day, although i've gone tired of that minimize to tray thing, and now just keep it on the taskbar.

Your referring to the Safely Remove Hardware icon. Unless you have a "permanent" thing like an external drive or DVD drive that you never turn off or unplug, you actually should be using this lol...
