Request: Deepdream frontend.
« on: July 10, 2015, 12:31 PM »
A couple weeks ago, I posted about the new trippy artform from Google
https://www.donation....msg383771#msg383771

Now Google has opensourced the project.  All of the needed components are listed on the blogpost here:
http://googleresearc...for-visualizing.html
And it's all open stuff.

Unfortunately it's still pretty far beyond the technical abilities of most of us non-programmer types...

A couple people have tried to make web-based front-ends for the technology:
https://deepdream.in/
http://deepdreams.zainshah.net/
But as you might guess, the ques are impossibly long...

Is it possible for one of you gurus to make a desktop version on this?  Or maybe it's not even possible because of the need to be online with Google Images...  IDK.

Thots?   :-*

I tried out deepdream.in last night and it said I needed to wait 5.5 hours. It's been probably close to 20 hours and it still says "almost ready."

I think it's borked.

This , on a similar tack, might be worth a look
I had to install Ubuntu and a few other bits and pieces and I nearly (!) got it to work. Someone more tech-savvy than me probably could with probably good results.

Hi Jesse,
as I lurch towards my dotage I'm getting less and less social. Spend a lot of time camping in peaceful surrounds. But I still regularly lurk here :)
Thanks
Tony

**Thread Hi-Jack Alert!**

Got any nice recommendations?

I recently did trekking+camping on the West Highland Way in Scotland - that was pretty great :)

How to make your own "DeepStyle" neural images (on Linux):

Original photo + classical painting = DeepStyle image:

DeepStyle Example.jpgRequest:  Deepdream frontend.

DeepStyle Example 2.jpgRequest:  Deepdream frontend.

First off, if you aren’t in a big hurry or don’t have a Linux machine, you can still play with DeepStyle using the DeepForger Twitter bot (send it an image and a style, and it will eventually reply with the results you want). If you want to process more images quickly (and with more control over the results), read on for the tutorial.

http://www.makeuseof...gs-deepstyle-ubuntu/

EDIT: Looks like you can submit two photos to the Twitter bot and it will do the first one in the style of the second one. For example:

DeepStyle Forger Example.pngRequest:  Deepdream frontend.

SECOND EDIT: I just realized that this is the same thing that tsaint posted here:

This , on a similar tack, might be worth a look
I had to install Ubuntu and a few other bits and pieces and I nearly (!) got it to work. Someone more tech-savvy than me probably could with probably good results.

I think the DeepDream stuff is basically just repeating the process a bajillion times. This DeepStyle stuff just does the process once.

I just read through the DeepStyle paper -- its similar but different -- it's computing separate representations of an image's content features and "style" (a bit handwavey, but correlations in texture and color), and then generating (by optimizing a loss function) a novel of image that comes close to having the "content" of the one image and the "style" of another.

I haven't read the DeepDream papers, but essentially I believe they are using object recognition data to hallucinate/exaggerate features that are "perceived" (by algorithm but not by human cognition) in an image.

It's tempting.. this is close to my academic background (neural networks, before the "deep" adjective became the magic sauce that everyone throws into everything to get publicity).

I'm actually pretty astonished by these new "DeepStyle" images. Unlike "Deepdream" from Google, some of these actually have genuine artistic "merit", or at least aesthetic appeal beyond the "weird", "fascinating", "bizarre", etc. Why just look at that image of flowers transformed into O'Keeffe style!

P.S. If anyone gets the "DeepStyle" software running locally I'd love to send a few image pairs through it. I have some things I want to test. :D
