sharepoint question
« on: April 30, 2015, 08:45 AM »
hello!

I have a list of files and folders in a sharepoint website

In another sharepoint website, I want to create shortcuts to these files

is there an easy way? to grab the links (or maybe straightaway shortcuts) convert/create shortcuts and upload them altogether in the sharepoint website?

I don't know how to grab the shortcuts from multiple sharepoint files/folders at once, or how to grab the urls of multiple files/folders at once and convert them into shortcuts.
Then, I don't know how to upload shortcut files into a sharepoint website, trying to select one desktop shortcut to upload it, it just opened the file and it didn't allow me to upload the actual shortcut. Do I need different type of shortcut?

any idea?

thanks!

What's wrong with a Wiki page in Sharepoint? You can create a list of links there, easy as pie.
You do need Create and Modify permissions of course.

what you mean wiki page in sharepoint?

In my sharepoint, it lists files and folders (directories basically), it doesn't create html webpages afaik

how can I list url shortcuts instead of actual files and folders?

it's not about sharepoint, it's basically about how to upload in a website a file that goes to a linked file basically!

Not sure if this will be of any use, but I recall from implementing a Sharepoint site for a client several years back that, if the Sharepoint site is within an Intranet, then it is possible to view the files as being on a mapped drive in the network attaching to that Intranet - assuming you have the access rights.
This was handy for fast loading of files up into the Sharepoint system. I think it also worked the other way too - for downloading files from the Sharepoint to a local PC on the network.
Not sure whether this would work the same across the Internet to a Cloud-based Sharepoint site, though I would presume that, if it was all part of a virtual Intranet, then it should work the same.

yeah that's true IainB

but the problem is this:
I need a file that will be shortcut to a web file
I create shortcuts on desktop, but I cannot edit them to make them point to a web file
this is what I need

Okay, so outside of having installed one once to experiment on/with - which I ended up never having time to do, I know nothing about SharePoint. But I've been watching the agony which is this thread for a week and thought what the hell I'll see what I can find..

To that end I can across the following link which may or may not be helpful in-and-of-itself ... But might at least help shed some - more specific - light on which part isn't working:

http://www.sharepoin...ocument-library.html

The article seems to imply (to me...) that this should just work in a normal HTML link fashion, so it's possible some key part is either currently offline or misconfigured.

thank's that is a good article, BUT
I think there is a simpler way

I right clicked on a sharepoint file/folder and clicked 'copy shortcut'
then I pasted on my desktop and it created a shortcut!
these shortcut files is what I need!
I can then upload them to my sharepoint site!

is there a way to create these files at once, in batch, and not one by one?

I asked a colleague of mine who works a lot with Sharepoint and this is what he has to say:

I have reviewed the post and I might recommend the workaround: creating a HTML page with the links, as you can see below:

Workaround: Create a simple HTML page with META REFRESH Tag and upload the HTML file to the document library

Read more: http://www.sharepoin...y.html#ixzz3ZofXkm7B
Both solutions, creating a content type link and creating the links and the HTML page implies manual work.

thanks but the problem is I cannot have the administrator of the sharepoint website to add the 'add link to document'  :-\

that's why I just need to convert a list of urls into desktop shortcuts to those urls in batch!

there must be a solution!

but my google capabilities didn't work much!

So... This is actually less about SharePoint (and its configuration), and more about finding an automated link harvester that you can turn lose on a SharePoint site ... Yes?

yes, I already said that in my previous posts, even my first one

it's not strictly about sharepoint

it's about grabing urls and make them files

I figured out that it's fairly easy

you just drag a link to your desktop

but it doesn't work for many links, because you cannot select many links at once

but not only a link harvester, (I think there are addons that do this), but a converter, to convert the urls into shortcut files

so I saved manually all the shortcuts of the files in desktop, by dragging them, they appear not to have an extension but I figured out they have the extension .url

unfortunately, my sharepoint admin has blocked uploading of .url files, but I can upload .htm files

I figured out that opening the .url file with notepad, and saving the exact text as .htm file, it works! ie. it goes to the target url, plus it is allowed to be uploaded at my sharepoint

my problem is now to do this in batch: to convert the .url files into .htm files
unfortunately, a simple rename wont work: it produces a .htm.url file

is there a solution to this?

maybe in batch, copy the text of .url files and save it as .htm file?

Either go to folder view settings and disable 'Hide file extensions for known file types' (so it stops doing the double extension), or do the rename at the command line with ren *.url *.htm

And does your admin also stop you from running programs not installed on the computer?

There are plenty of rename utilities available, eg. Bulk Rename (no install) <- download link

Powershell?

Code: PowerShell [Select]
  1. Get-ChildItem -Filter "*.url" | Rename-Item -NewName {$_.name -replace '.url','.htm' }

Tell your admin to do it?

If the admin(s) closed off access to the command-line, he/she/they should definitely have closed down PowerShell. The latter is much more powerful.

With no access, do you mean: you are not allowed to start the command-line box or are you not allowed to run batch scripts? If only the first is true, then use a (portable) text editor, create the batch file in there and execute it after you saved it in the folder where you need to rename your files (your user account proved to have read/write rights there).

4wd is right about asking your admin(s) to do this. That or do what it takes to get promoted to admin status in your place of employment...which would be handier, if the renaming job is a recurring job.  :P

he hasn't! lol!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  :P :P :P

but renaming .url to .htm doesn't go to the website unfortunately (I thought it did because I didn't realize it actually renamed to .htm.url)
so what should an htm file contain in order to visit an url?

Put the line above in a html file and open that html file in a browser.
