Ran a 10k race today.. any other runners here?
« on: April 26, 2015, 02:41 AM »
Just finished my 2nd ever 10k run today, in the cold and rain.  Was super fun.

My time was 1:05:33 (thats a 10:33 minute mile pace).

I'm enjoying running lately.  Any other runners here?

I'd like to do more, but my ankles and knees don't like it much... but I think I need to work at it more before i hit 60 later this year. Still, I manage to do a good mud run every year with my 7-year-old. (He "accidentally" ran it with me the first time when he was 5... my wife was late for the handoff!  :D)

Yep, three times a week, usually in the 3-5 mile range. Never done a 10k race, but my best time for that distance is 53:13. Done several 5k races, though (my PR is 24:12). Those are fun to do with others; I raced with my pastor a couple times, another time I ran with my brother.

Started in February 2014 with Couch-to-5k, and could barely run for a minute; since then I've run 715 miles (and lost 85 pounds). Kept it up all this winter, running inside only when I had to (too cold AND too slippery kept me in—one or the other and I went out).

I should add that I love all the tech. If I run in the dark I have five batteries on my person
Garmin FR220 running watch
Garmin footpod (tracks cadence)
Scosche RHYTHM plus (optical heartrate monitor)

Black Diamond sprinter headlamp
Nathan strobe light

I don't do music, and I don't bring my phone unless I'm traveling (and thus more likely to get lost).

Oof! That's a big one ... I hit 50 in January. I've got much the same knees and ankles are crap issue. I'm trying to figure out what to do about it before it gets to far ... Seems I was a bit hard on them in my younger days. I need to get back into yoga me thinks.

A friend got me into running around the world - the idea is that any distance is "around the world," just probably not at the equator.

Since I first started walking 2.5 years ago, and including today's run, I've traveled 866.33 miles, which means I (finally!) made it to 88° latitude. 87° here I come!

The formula, I think, is
= degrees(acos([miles]/24875.1309986))

running really does seem like just about the worst exercise for your bones and joints.. but it's also uniquely "compelling" in terms of scratching a primal itch in the way other exercises don't seem to do.

I agree - it seems a lot more "pure" than a lot of other sports. I did track, diving, and cross country in school, really enjoyed the cross country and tolerated the others! It was always a good mechanism for me to just "go", kindof back to basics.

I think that may be because it's an all-weather sport. Part of the "fun" is going out, when it's 10 below or raining or icy or 100 degrees or so foggy you can't see. And proving you can talk yourself into putting your shoes on anyway.

Or like my run today (which was beautiful and sunny and 50 or so), in which I ran a square and somehow ran into the wind going all four directions. Someone is watching me and flipping a meteorological switch when I get to a corner.

For those of you with knee problems: maybe try what we call a 'Finnenbahn'. It's a running track on soft ground. Google Images for 'Finnenbahn' to see what they look like. They are quite common around where I live. I could imagine they exist in other places around the world as well.

A bit late, but here I am.

I started couch to 5K in march.

Now I'm running 3 days a week between 5 and 7K
I hope to consistently keep running 3 times a week and be able to run 10K by the end of the year.

Since I mostly run late in the evening, I bought 2 of these : http://www.amazon.co...p/product/B00N1SN7I0
A red one and a blue one. The red one goes on the back, the blue one diagonal on my chest.
They are great, very light (as in not heavy) and provide good enough light.

There are other that are cheaper, but mine have a great build.
And there is no price on security.

It should be able to run 36 hours with 1 charge.

Awesome, keep at it. And remember to play the "long game" with regards to injury and burnout. Better to take a day off now than a decade off later.

Those are great for running in well-lighted areas, but if you find yourself away from streetlights I can recommend this rechargable headlamp which has a taillight built in as well. Looks like there's a newer version now which is cheaper.

Huh? They are powered LED lights. Why would you need to be near streetlights for them to work well?

DeVamp's link is for colored LED belts which are good for "being seen." If you need also to "see," a headlamp like I linked, or a flashlight of some kind, is needed.

My "being seen" solution is a reflective vest with an amber light on the front. I'll run in the dark with that, so long as there's enough ambient light (perhaps from streetlights) to see road hazards. I figured out a 5k route through my little town that is fully lit. But out of the downtown, I can't rely on starlight, especially when occasionally facing blinding headlights.

Make sense? Or am I the confused one?

Yeah, that makes sense. I thought you were talking about using the headlamp for being seen.
