Free eBooks
« on: August 16, 2014, 10:29 PM »
http://kebooks.com/2...-deals-sat-aug-16th/

There was a discussion in another thread about free ebooks but there's information here that may interest people outside the U.S.A..
I don't know if this is a change, a big change, or even of interest to anyone.

There's lots of info in the page but at the very bottom is some info regarding people outside U.S. signing up for free ebooks, depending on the country where you reside. Some countries are listed by name and there's also an International area.
I get an email every day listing free ebooks and you can also get the list by genre.
If you sign up, I would suggest you select the genre you're interested in, but get a list for each genre. Scrolling through a long list of book titles every day where you may find nothing of interest gets old fast. Sometimes if I'm busy I delete the whole list without a glance  :-[
To get the free books you need an ereader for your PC program. All free, take your choice  :)
You need an account at Amazon... also free.
And a warning........... the list is daily and the books may only be free TODAY. When you select a book it opens in your Amazon account where it also shows the current price. If it's not shown as Free don't select buy unless you're prepared to pay the listed price.
Clear as mud but if you have questions or need help reply and I'll try. I've been getting the How-To list for a long time and I've accumulated a sizeable library  :D

Another nice one is BookBub.com. They have both free and cheap ebooks, and you can select categories of interest and specific retailers, and they will only email you when they have something that matches your preferences.

So, you can configure it to only notify you when they have cheap/free sci-fi and cookbooks to recommend on Amazon, if you want.  ;)

Great  ;D , and while you're here maybe you can clear up a question ricocheting around in my mind  :tellme:
My post above was posted mainly because it contained information for users outside the U.S.
Duty, tariffs, taxes, all suddenly popped into my mind!
When people outside the country get an ebook from Amazon is there any payment involved? Some places have a value added tax; does that apply to ebooks
The whole thing is interesting and never crossed my mind before............
like, you know, "a penny for your thoughts"............ is that a VAT or a fine for thinking that thought   :D

I could use some help here  :-*

Thanks, but I'm not looking for more books and I live in California   :D
I am just curious about the legalities involved  :tellme:
How do you pay duty on a ebook transmitted over the internet.... is there any duty?
I've never even heard the subject mentioned and it never entered my mind until I saw those options for different countries mentioned in the Free Kindle eBooks newsletter  :D

I think the different countries mentioned as being supported may have more to do with licensing, than anything else. Even if a book is temporarily free, it doesn't mean the publisher wants it distributed globally, for free, and may exert some control over it, allowing it in some countries, but not others.

As far as taxes are concerned, it may all depend on why an item's final cost is $0, as to whether there are any taxes due on it.

I can only speak from the perspective of where I live, since I am not a global tax expert.

In my home state of New Jersey, there could be taxes due on a $0 purchase, depending on how it ended up that way. If, for example, Amazon marked down the price for clearance or just a sale, then it enters my shopping cart already priced at $0, and no taxes would be due on it, because 7% of $0 is $0.

But if it entered my cart at $2.99 and the use of a coupon or gift certificate reduced that price to $0, there would be taxes due on the original price at which it entered my cart, because 7% of $2.99 is $0.21, which is more than $0.

So, the online merchant, if they are required to collect the tax, would have to do so and then turn it over to my state's government.

Syncfusion releases abbreviated but thorough explanations of technologies in their appropriately named Succinctly series.

https://www.syncfusion.com/ebooks

They have an app to manage the books, but you can download each separately.  I've read the Git, Github, Docker, Statistics Fundamentals, Unity Game Development, Webhooks, and others.  They're in general around 100 pages, and get to the specifics instead of walking you into it, so might not be suitable for complete beginners, but have the fundamentals for those that have an aptitude for any similar subjects.

Looks cool, but they require you to sign up with a work email address to download them. Lame.

I was already signed up... and not with a work address, which I guess is the reason I'd not noticed that you have to sign up with a work e-mail address.  I've not gotten anything from them after doing so other than notifications of new e-books, not that this fact makes it any less of a problem.

UPDATE: Did you mean the company field?  I just fudged that looking at my account.

Is the email you attempted to use a free account?  I'm submitting a support request to get them to at least respond... and to find out if it is legal to redistribute them since it seems that some will not be able to get them directly if this isn't just an oversight.

I tried a couple Mailinator domains which they rejected. But was finally able to get them to accept one.

Yes, but it is a Russian site. So, be careful.
