Free icons for developers
« on: May 13, 2006, 03:33 AM »
I came across a great site today that has an immense collection of free, quality icon images that developers can use in their projects. The Silk collection is really cool!

They are published with a Creative Commons license, so as long as you give the guy credit and include a link to his site in your about box, you are free to use them any way you wish in your projects, including making derivative works of them.

They are in .png format but they can be easily converted to .bmp or .ico.

How can you go wrong?

Crystal Clear Icons - Icons from the Crystal Clear icon set by Everaldo Coelho. The icons are licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).

Also, The Icon Factory's freeware section.

Frequent updates, and gorgeous pixels.

You can't use those in your applications...says right on the sidebar of the site "The Iconfactory makes this content available only for personal, desktop use."

Well, crap.  Sorry about that.

Good thing I haven't actually used them in my apps.

Wow! Those were some very good icons. Most of the free ones are just garbage and unusable in a real project. I'd use those ones in a heartbeat.

I've used both Creative Commons and FAMFAM.  They rock.  Reminds me I have to put a page together to give credit back

How can you release icons under the GPL/LGPL? :-s

Does that mean that if I use those icons in my app, my whole app would fall under the LGPL? Crazy.

But wasn't the LGPL made to avoid such kind of things?

Well...

with LGPL code, you need to either use the code in DLL form, or if you use a static library, provide your .obj files so people can re-link. I dunno how it applies in the case of icons. *GPL is a mess.

There are a lot of free ones available over at IconShock that you can use in your projects. They give you a lot of sizes and formats in each set. There is even vector sources available for most of the free ones. (those are free too)

I am not too sure what you would do with most of them, but some of them are quite usable. There are many that could be used for a media player application.

The way to get all of them is to swap them with others on their forum, so that way you get everything. This can take a bit of time. Downloading takes even longer since they will only allow you to download one set at a time and they don't support download managers.

If you want to see some of what they have without signing up, take a look at the right side of the page.

There is currently a total of 127 different sets. I have managed to download 92 of them over the last year (getting the rest today), and they are taking up over 6 gigs on my HD.  :-[

Since it's a bunch of pixels, and the icon "source" can be extracted (Icon Extractor anyone?) I think it's OK to use them.

I think it's safe to use them, Opera and other proprietary apps have skins based on those icons, and they are used without problems. After all, loading external icons is kind of using an external DLL :)

app, you're a packrat ;D

Niiiice! I love the Fugue set, and what an extraordinary number of great icons! I might even consider replacing the Silk set I'm using on the web with Fugue.. :-*

Nice! I think I can find one for BlitzType, the problem is....not sure how to add an overlay over the icon, when a function is turned off.
