Listary 4 released - tons of new features
« on: March 07, 2013, 02:44 PM »
Listary

Files at your fingertips

Listary is a unique search utility for Windows. Not only does it make file browsing truly flexible -- thanks to its multi-file managers support -- but the ultra-compact UI also redefines minimalism. The lightweight design doesn't stop it from providing various advanced features however, that may fit the needs of both casual and power users alike. All you have to do is just type the file name that you’re looking for, and Listary will display the search results at breakneck speed.

Unfortunately, it doesnt seem to work with Dopus...

Just upgraded from version 3, and it seems it still does not support selecting multiple files :(.

Also, it apparently needs admin privileges to run, so it doesn't start with Windows automatically anymore.

It's checked, and it runs fine if I log into the admin account, but on my normal account it does not start.

If I run it manually, I get a dialog asking for admin privileges.

I have the same problem as Jibz. It does autostart, but asks for admin privileges. Probably need to contact the developer about it.

I wish it just had its old clean interface back. (The one thing I like about the new Fuzzy Search feature is that I can disable it...)

Hello everyone, developer of Listary here.

Unfortunately, it doesnt seem to work with Dopus...

Listary won't show up automatically in DOpus, please press the hotkey Win + S (or Win + W if you upgraded from version 3) to activate it manually.

Also, it apparently needs admin privileges to run, so it doesn't start with Windows automatically anymore.

Listary 4 needs to be run as administrator. If you're using a standard user account you created yourself, you may be out of luck. I'm working on a solution to let Listary run at startup under non-admin accounts now.

The old UI is too small to display full paths which are necessary for the new features in v4. We have to move on :)

Thanks rjbull for the post, and thanks Curt for the replies

So if we turn off the new (and annoying) "new features", we don't need an oversized GUI. An option to have a smaller font would be appreciated.

I welcome the new version!  Thanks.

Just fyi for folks, I use Listary along with Direct Folders.  Listary is the main tool, for all the features it supports.  The overlapping features in DF I turn off.  The ones I leave on are:
--the info panel (useful for navigation and floats above the window)
--resizing the window, and default sort (detail mode) (Listary doesn't do this)

one thing neither program does is allow the user to set the column widths in detail mode.  I always find the default column width of the first column (the filename) to be too narrow.  I always want it to be wider.  Can't find a way to do this.  A feature request, if I may!

A screenshot of both in action:

Have been running v4 throughout the beta testing period, and gotta say I love it  :-*

Instant system wide searches is fantastic.

Good job Channing

The new Listary search capability is going to change my life!
It is lightning fast, so smart (fuzzy) and so much keyboard friendly.
Man ... I am going to Ctl+O then Win+S a lot.

The only complain I have is: It does too much when I hit ESC key on the "Action" menu. The "Action" menu is closed, so as the "Path" menu from where I hit "Right" key is also closed and there is more, it also clear whatever I have typed into the "Search" field.

In all seriousness; No, $20 is more than a fair deal.  And kudos to the developer for allowing full functionality in the free version too.   :D

Grrr  Gotta find a new hotkey again! The Listary default is the key already taken by OneNote.

I hate trying out new hotkeys, mainly because there is no way to know what is taking up my existing hotkeys! I do use Marek's hotkey tool but that only tells me if a particular hotkey is in use; not what it is for. And about every other time I am trying to find a new hotkey - if the program doesn’t tell me a hotkey is already in use - I just type in the new one and cross my fingers to see what happens, and I often end up trying Win+L and locking my user out!

I guess no one knows of a utility out there yet that can tell me what hotkeys are being used by which programs? It would make things so much easier!

BTW, the new Listary Pro looks great, and I'll try it out as soon as I find a decent hotkey for it!  ;)

Thanks!

Jim
