See www.mybrowserinfo.com/detail.asp for a quick list of what your browser tells about your PC.  Or Browserspy.de separates everything in nice pages for you.

In IE you could go to Internet Options, on the General tab, and click the Languages button to modify the settings.  Will this work for you?

Most sites do use Geo-location nowadays. No matter what your settings for your browser, region or indeed the language of the OS itself (in my case: Dutch OS, preferred language is set to English and I still get served in Spanish when visiting international pages, such as the one from HP and Oracle).

So I know of your problem, but cannot supply another answer than: put up with it.
Some of these international sites allow you to register yourself with them and most of these offer language settings. So when you log in at that site your language will be set to your wishes, but not before.

[off-topic]
Once upon a time, many many moons ago, I was tasked with the job of digitizing porn videos to be used on some Dutch porn sites, specifically tailored for different types of "connoisseurs"...one of those was German porn from the 80's. If it would be possible to erase those images by sandpapering my eyeballs, I would consider it. Seriously. Still feel entitled to hazard pay on that "deal".

It's a while since I ran XP and I'm not fully sure what your problems were with the US English that the Oz English fixed, but seems to me the "English (Ireland)" choice would be closer to home (sounds like you're on the European continent) - with the advantage of metric and euros (but again, I cant remember what exactly is changed with the language choice).

I've since moved onto Windows 7 & 8.
I bought 7 -in Germany- very cheaply as a multi-language Dell OEM; and in 8 the language can be changed easily, just download the language of your choice.

tomos, the Irish alternative was on my agenda if ever the Australian English didn't work, but it was fun to tweak all the number, date and hour settings back to Continental European standards, even in the Australian version. By the way, with the above settings, Win= German, then user AND language = English, even Google search isn't stable in English, but reverts to Dutch (!) once a day - (wrong) geolocalization over everything.

For 7, OEM or you, you need the more expensive versions ("prof" or something) in order to change languages, and 8 is finally "open" to your respective choice, then. But as said, geolocalization is the core term here, so any language setting isn't that helpful in the end, advertizing (and more such intrusive things) follow us.

Funny (but predictable): Most posts in the web re language settings, etc., aint about "how to change the settings" but "how to detect the settings; I want to present my web site, accordingly" - hence my having to live with Dutch ads making me laugh here and there (I read some Dutch, and it's kind of "wrong German", so often it's really funny).

On the other hand, it's the Dutch, and the Scandinavian, who in non-natively-speaking English Europa speak really almost perfect English, and was it to be decided by me, I'd wish French and German kids had also the chance to learn really good English early on, as Dutch and Scandinavian kids do: English as a lingua franca (= the ex-Esperanto, buried forever, and that's a good thing, but the idea behind was brilliant) is exactly what we all need, all of us - but reality is, three thirds of adult Germans or French ain't able to express themselves in English, and that's a real problem. Rant off. ;-)

I tend to use the search box in FF - that way I can make sure it's exactly the site I want, .de or .com, be it bing or google or duckduckgo.
Youtube I'm usually logged into so that's not a problem for me either.

For 7, OEM or you, you need the more expensive versions ("prof" or something) in order to change languages,

Last time I checked, I could get a multi-language OEM 7 Ultimate on ebay.de for under €50. And it's fully legal for anyone to install -in Germany at any rate.

There is a tool called Vistalizator, which enables you to change the OS language from Vista and Win7 even if the version is below Enterprise or Ultimate. It still requires you to download the official language packs from Microsoft though.

Exactly, "Ultimate" they call it, and the Enterprise versions. OEM for 49 euro or something? That's not that a good I think, but you're right, these OEM version, in Germany, bec./of their BGH (hightest court there) travel to another comp - in theory. Since they phone home, I don't know if MS Germany will give you the needed code when they know it's not the original pc anymore. So I wouldn't buy, but buy a regular version for under 50 euro as well, but that travels without problems. Especially Win7 could become highly valued in some years in case even Win9 isn't much better than the 8 flavor.

On the other hand, it's always one Win, one pc, whilst for other sw, those OEM version often don't install but on a single pc, when the ordinary version installs on three, recent example for me, was wondering if to buy Adobe Acrobat 9 OEM or, for the same price, 8 for up to 3 pc's... well, that's probably become a defunct prob for many people now, and at least old Acrobat ebay prices will go down, I suppose.

And then, my posts except the very first here prove that these language settings ain't as important as I once thought since then you can tweak any language a little bit. Ok, not thoroughly: German pops up in my system for dialog boxes and such, so I'd clearly prefer a genuine English Windows.

Btw, for English Windows, the simplest solution (for Continental Europa) is to order them from British vendors: Postage is from 2 to 5 pounds, prices are decent, delay is a week or so - I've bought lots of sw in GB during the last years, never had problems (but bying from the U.S. often means problems: customs (not for customs, but for vat, calculated on the price you pay - they even look at the corresponding ebay page in order to know what you really paid!), delay (up to 1 month is ok, but once, I waited 3 months, had been sure by then the seller was a crock, which he wasnt - after arrival, I verified he had sent the parcel 3 months ago!), transportation cost (often 30 bucks and even more, and some commercial sellers do not even send to Europe), and on my latest try, last year, I got student sw = an "educational" version, for having bought the ordinary version (and paid accordingly) - that's ebay, the trans-Atlantic variety... (After he got my red warning then, he even contacted me he did this (= stealing?) for a living, so I please would I take away the negative score in order to not further harm his business, oh yeah.)

So, buying in GB is always a good idea if the price is right (and it mostly is) - I would have bought there English Windows version, wasn't it for the need to then re-install all your stuff, so I live with German pop-up boxes...

Vistalizator? We all become acquainted with a lot of formerly unknown things here, that's good! But the bad news is, "It still requires you to download the official language packs from Microsoft though." means there's high probability it'll be illegal! (= the download and use of the language packs, I mean, outside of their legitimate use framework) But tell them to do the same for XP (and in a live system, please), and I'll install it, notwithstanding! (Just dreaming.) ;-)

No, the language packs are freely available...last time I checked (which was about a month ago). As far as I understood Vistalizator enables the changing of languages capability in all versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The possibility of changing the OS language doesn´t seem that illegal to me in the first place. Most modern OS come with this ability. With Linux this can be done easily for years already. Cannot say anything about Apple, my exposure to that OS has been extremely limited, fortunately.
