Stealth-focused Computer Games
« on: September 25, 2012, 09:05 AM »
I played Deus Ex Human Revolution to completion last week. I don't play games often but I really enjoyed it (similar enjoyment to Mass Effect series).  I could have done without all the side puzzle game thing involving "hacking" and the micro-management upgrade/rpg stuff, and it was a bit overly talky, and i hated that the sniper rifle was useless, but I loved the stealth-focused gameplay.  Big thumbs up from me.

I really like the Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed series- even the latest installations.  The only downside is that its ubisoft, so I have to watch the DRM requirements, and in cases, use the 360 instead b/c of that.  But I'd recommend both if you like the stealth based gameplay.

I'd also recommend going back to the first ones in the Deus Ex series if you haven't.  They still hold up IMO, and the first one is a definite classic.

Splinter Cell Conviction was also quite a good stealth game, as were all of the Hitman games, as was Sniper Elite.

Ghost Warrior is another I'd forgotten about (remembered that when you said Sniper Elite)

Crysis 2 has a fair bit of sneaking around.

Watch for my new game coming soon, called Boardroom Coup.    ;)

How could I forget about that.  That's one series I hope they re-do.  And I hope that Forsaken is good.

Actually, the elder scrolls games can be played as pretty good stealth-focused games too.  It's just that they allow you to play in other ways.

Pick any decent submarine sim game. Stealth is the basis of all submarine warfare.

Jane's 688(i) and EA's Sub Command were the most realistic. Definitely not for the impatient since there was a huge amount of training you needed to do before you could hope to complete a mission with either.

More fun (in the gaming sense) was Ubi's Silent Hunter 2. It could be played alone or online. And you could also combine it with the companion game called Destroyer Command. Having one player as the destroyer's skipper and another as the U-boat captain made for some great non-repeating gameplay. Matches could go on for many hours if both players really knew their business. Just like in real life sub engagements.

The sequel Silent Hunter 3 was even better as a stand-alone game since it added campaign play. (It's still my favorite historic sub-sim.)

(Note: Silent Hunter II is available from GOG for $10.)

Dishonored!  I just go through playing it, and it's awesome!  I have a review on my site... if you want to buy, the affiliate links there would help... but just buy!  It was a good game, no matter where you get it from.

Seconded! :)

It's a great game, and has a lot of the things I like in Thief (it doesn't try to be thief, though, just has some of the good elements from it). Doing my second playthrough now - first was on Normal mode (which should really be called 'a bit too easy' :)), being goodie-twoshoes and überstealthy. The 2nd playthrough is on Hard, and it's semi-stealthy (this time I've even used the pistol!) and ruthless but not all-out psychopathic (I try to avoid civilian losses, but I kill "semi-innocents" such as guards if they cross my way). Definitely worth trying both playstyles.

Definitely worth trying both playstyles.

Actually, i've now tried a third, and it's really difficult if you put the game on hard.

Spoiler
Play the game murdering everything... make sure to get rid of the knock off elixir.  Then, Emily will greet you when you're back from a mission and ask you how many people you killed, and you'll find a letter from Callista about how disturbed Emily is.  I used this as a moment of catharsis for Corso.  But the city is already screwed, so it's hard to be a ghost from then on.  It's even hard to find a place to put unconscious bodies so they won't be eaten with all of the rats about.  The challenge is getting to Low Chaos before the end of the game.  I haven't been able to do it... it's supposed to be possible, but I don't see how, even though I was able to save her on this play-through.

Stealth Bastard also looks pretty good, it's kind of action-stealth. Not the patient-calculated stealth people have been peddling so far

Hey there, I had not paid much attention to this part of the forums until now ^^
Thiefw  :-* :-* :-*
How could I forget about that.  That's one series I hope they re-do. […]

By the way, do you guys know about the unofficial 1.19 patch for Thief 2 yet ? :}
It can also run on Thief 1 / Gold with just a little more 'work'.

You can run them with even less work by getting them on Steam or GOG :)

Yeah but they won't run as great as with the 1.19 patch :p
You should take some time to read what it does ;)

Also, as for Thief 1, only the Gold version is available on GOG and Steam — though I recently made a downgrade patch for those few people who may want one.

Far Cry 3 has a *lot* of stealth, lots of sniper action, is fantastically addictive, and is huge.

It's also another leap forward towards games that make you feel like you are in a living, breathing, autonomous world.  Highly recommended except if you value your time.

I kept looking at getting it... just still too expensive for me, especially when I likely won't play it for a while because of Skyrim.
