phew there is an edge there :)

Screenshot - 2012-09-19 , 21_14_34.pngFor XKCD fans

could you imagine if it was round or something...
I saw it this morning, and managed to miss the click and drag instructions -
it actually works within the large pane in the comic, well worth going there
and checking it out. It's amazing how it's done, and it stays sharp at different
zoom levels (in the second link)

Anyone know how it's done?

I actually tried - to no avail - to get the large image from the source of the webpage. From what I understand, it's JavaScript.

What impresses me the most, though, is how the artist (Randall Munroe) managed to draw all that and include small gags everywhere. That's an impressive amount of work.

I saved an image via the context menu and it was blank .png file

It works kind of like Google maps with lots of images at varying sizes, so there isn't a single image that you're looking at.

But, it was very cool!

Yep, really is too long. I also haven't seen the whole thing. But if you didn't already, try zooming out to the max just to have an idea of how large it is :)

Don't be afraid to dive down the holes in the ground. Fun to be had down there, too.

Let's see, if I did that right, it actually loops back on itself.  After the LONG flat it bumps up again and starts over.  Very cool.

Does that make it a paper towel tube?

on the .de link, it works like google maps:

  • you can zoom in and out with just the mouse wheel (doesnt work with control) and
  • it will zoom into wherever the mouse pointer is

Makes it easier to find the interesting bits without killing your wrist with all that click and drag :)

That would definitely be a godsend -- as the clicking is killing me (arthritis) -- but is this a FF only thing?? The lower map frame doesn't show up for me in IE.

Darn.

Dragged around a bit on the xkcd site at work, then had to resume coding.

This... thing... is... huge!

weird - it's totally different in IE.
In FF, it just shows the whole image with a +/- button to zoom (and as said above works like google maps).

The actual comic link (http://xkcd.com/1110/) shows here in IE8 but click and drag keeps dragging, even when you let the mouse button up - which means it goes over and back, and over and back, and...

I got lost in the tunnels....... send a search team to find me or I'll never get back to work in time. This is awesome. He must have spent ages on it.
