Color My Folder 2.0.1.0 (DC Special)
« on: May 24, 2012, 08:32 PM »
I released the version 2.0.1.0 of Color My Folder. If you have the older menu version, you can go to your start menu, Programs, Color My Folder and Check for update. If you have the latest "beta" with the new dialog interface, go to Help > Check For Update, or you can download the new setup from the website http://starpunch.net

It is now shareware. The only difference is that to use your own icons or icon resources (EXE, DLL, ICL) you need to register. Normal registration is $15, but for members of DonationCoder.com you can register for $10 by clicking this link (PayPal) https://www.paypal.c...ton_id=MUKFWW5JP77YU

Hope you guys like it.

I have tested it on Windows XP (virtual machine), though it should work, I was unable to get it to work.  :( I am still looking into why.

especially seeing as you're selling it, maybe you should mention that, in some way, on the app's page.

I added support for Windows XP now (v2.0.2.0). I figured it out. :D
Give it a try and let me know if it works for you. You can download from http://starpunch.net or Check For Update if you already have a version installed.

Hey the registered version looks awesome.  I like the ability to access DLLs.  I did notice that I occasionally got an error message.

It would be great if I could point CMF to a folder of ICO files as well.

Thanks.   And thanks again to Skwire  :D

Edit:  In the image, it's a huge DLL.   255 icons.  Not sure if that matters.

@tomos - That's ok. I needed to support XP anyway.   ;)

@kunkel321 - Great, glad you like it.  :) I'll look to see if I can list a folder of icons. Can you send me a copy of that DLL? My email address is in the help file or you can use the mail icon under my DC avatar. That may be the problem, I might have to set a limit of how many icons can be loaded. I didn't test with huge icon resources.

You asked for it!  :D  New update, now supports listing ICO files in a folder (registered version only). You can do a Check for Update or download from the website. Read the help.pdf file for more information.

@v2.1.0.0 - Sunday, May 27, 2012
[FEATURE] Added Folder support. You can now select a folder that contains icons (Only ICO files are listed).
[REMOVED] Removed the tooltip from icons as they do not follow the icons when scrolling.
[REMOVED] No longer need to use <BR> to sep lines for icon labels.

Hmmm...  No luck accessing folder of ICOs on Win 7

Goto http://starpunch.net
or email [email protected]

    Program name:     Color My Folder
    Version number:   1.0.0.0
Windows name:     What windows, XP? Vista? 7? 2k? 98?
    Windows version:   6.1|7601
    Error number:     16
    Line Number:      602

I then tried making a folder with only a few ICOs and put it right on the desktop...  Got same error code.

Other ideas....

1. Make the 'Display Icon Names' feature optional.  I usually don't name my icons.
2. Reduce margins between the icons (top, bottom, and sides) so more fit in the window.
3. Make it so that--if the window gets resized--the icons get redrawn to take up window (top of image, see empty space in right side of window).
5-27-2012 11-49-51 AM.jpg
4.  This one might be a bit complicated...  Have it so that the user can put folders (of icos) or DLLs in the C:/Program Files/Color My Folder/Custom folder, and CMF will look there and list those items in the Icons Menu (top of image).  Or even better, make the custom collections available via a toolbar (bottom of image).

Just thots  :D :-\

Ok, I think I fixed the bug. Please re-download or check for update. Let me know, thanks!

@kunkel321
1) I'll see what I can do about the icon labels.
2) I may be able to do that
3) It is a real pain to get the icons to position properly after the dialog is resized. I alreay tried adding that in the beginning with no luck. I may revisit that at a later time.
4) I may be able to add a custom icon menu that will do that. I'll add that to my list.

[FEATURE] Made it so any supported icon resources or folders of icon files (*.ico) that are stored in the Color My Folder in the users My Documents folder are listed in a Custom Icons menu (registered version only)
[FEATURE] You can now hide the icon labels.

See the help.pdf file for more information.

Download from the site or do a Check for Update.

icon resources or folder

Would you consider making this location a user-selectable option, please?

Very cool!  Seems to work well.
I agree about making the 'Color My Folder' folder location optional though.

I use CMF on my work laptop.  My 'My Documents' is on my employer's network, rather than on my local C Drive.
As a result, My Documents is only accessible when I'm plugged in to the network.   (Which is frustrating since I often type reports from home).

fyi: The link on your site still says v2.2.

Yes, I do. Sorry about that. Apparently the simple act of copying and pasting text is now beyond my capabilities… like so much else  :-[  :)

1) In the beginning, does that folder open on it's own after closing CMF?
2) In shell23.dll there are some blank icons, that is the way MS made it. Not sure why, but that has been that way for a while. It's even that way in Windows 7.
3) Sometimes the icon doesn't change right away, not much I can do about that. It will show that is has been changed on CMF though right away. If you log off and back on it (or reboot) should be changed.
4) I see that it is going a little slow on your system. I don't think I can do anything about that either, but I'll see if I can speed it up. Getting and loading the icons can be slow.

Did I miss anything?

The folder opening at the beginning was not caused by closing CMF.  I was just doing that to show what I had going on in my My Documents folder.
(note that the screen cast has audio, which explains a bit of what I was doing)
I guess you're right about shell32.dll having some blanks http://i.imgur.com/tBitx.png I never noticed before... :-[
The issue of icons not always refreshing right away is a bit annoying, but I am aware that this is a Windows flaw (I've seen it in other programs).

THe only other thing worth looking into is that strange bit of CMF only displaying the chosen icon (see ~3 minutes in on the cast).

Idea:  When CMF is loading the contents of a large folder or DLL, would it be possible for it to cancel loading when a double-click is detected??  That way, if I see the icon I want to choose, I can imediately access it, rather than having to wait for the entire thing to load...
