Suggest an Icon Editor
« on: March 16, 2006, 02:04 AM »
I will be doing a review in the coming months on Icon Editors and I would like to have some input on which you think should be in it.  I have the below icon editors so far on the possible list.

The below are confirmed so far and should be in the review when finished.
      AWicons Pro - Commercial
Axialis IconWorkshop Corporate Edition - Commercial
      IconCool Studio - Commercial
      IconLover - Commercial
      Microangelo Toolset - Commercial
      LiquidIcon XP Editor - Free

I am using IconLover (http://www.aha-soft.com/index.htm) which seems to have replaced ArtIcons Pro (I got it as a free upgrade).

Actually I am using it as part of their IconUtils pack.

Actually I say I am using but actually it is more a case of it is installed and occasionally I remember it is there when I want to do something with an icon (rare).

Actually .... that was really good English ... n'est pas?

I never do many icon projects, but i've tried using The Gimp, and it handles icon creation quite well.
I'm not sure how well it can be integrated in that list.

There is a free plugin for Adobe PhotoShop (full versions and Elements) and PaintShop Pro that allows you to Open and Save ICO files in those programmes. Ot's called ICOFormat and is available at http://www.telegraphics.com.au/ so if you have an app that can use PS plugins you don't need a separate editor.

Hmmm...Icon Empire and Aha-Soft seem to be one in the same...as they got the same design looks and the same postal address on the support page. By the way, I will look into Icon Cool Studio.

Definately include Microangelo. I have been a user & fan of that software since the old version 2x. It's not just for icon creation....does animated cursors as well. (And a whole bunch of other neat tricks that would be fun even for people that have no use for an icon creator)

I'm cut right down the middle between Realworld Icon Editor and Axialis IconWorkshop,
but Realworld Icon Editor's installer gets on my nerves, when i try to move it's shortcut to
another folder on the start menu and then click on it from it's new location,it reinstalls.

... funny problem. When you move the shortcuts, the installer detects that vital files are missing and repairs the installation.

But I see your point - it will be fixed in next version.

is this a microsoft installer based thing?
(this is one of the reasons i loathe microsoft installer)

yes, it's very important to disable this repair of shortcuts, it makes managing the start menu very difficult.

partially, each file has an attribute indicating whether it is vital for the app or not. It is enabled by default for those internet shortcuts.

I just use Paint Shop Pro to make a png file and then use png2ico to convert it to an icon. . .

;) if you run into any other problem or if you'd like to propose a new feature, I would love to hear it.
...and yes, the batch image to icon conversion using drag and drop is one of the new features in the latest version.

    Hi Hamradio,

Can you consider in your review if the application can extract/change icons from other applications? E.g., if I want to substitute the big red 'O' icon in opera with something else...

I have found one program that does it, but it's kind of shaky:

    http://www.icon-maker.com/

    Thanks a lot
