DC Demographics
« on: January 09, 2011, 12:44 PM »
Has there ever been a general survey of the DC population to find out not only where we're all based, but a bunch of other stuff that would, to me at least, be quite interesting?

I'm thinking about such things as:

age: min, average, max
sex: male, female, other
occupation in some broad sense
do you have a site or blog?
hobbies and interests in some broad sense
Have pets?
What is your greatest achievement?

The list could go on...

It could be quite entertaining: "0.0004% of DC-ers are left-handed Taurean cornflake collectors, over the age of 95 with a wooden leg and a parrot called 'Rolando'"

Yarr!

we have done dc surveys in the past that were fun..

actually i think we need to do a new fundraiser in the next couple of months, perhaps we can accompany that with another survey, and start brainstorming about questions we should ask now.  and then we need to get a volunteer who is willing to "analyze" the survey results and come up with some usless, wild, and unscientific conclusions about them.

I'd like to help with the useless stuff if someone gets me the numbers at the end of the survey...  :P

To avoid all the work you could use what we used to call Rigger's Method.

ie. Just make up the numbers and base your conclusions on them.

The MPAA/RIAA use the same formula when calculating how many billions lost to pirating....so it must be valid.

Don't forget to employ Murdoch's Constant.

It's one of the most potent formulas in an MBA's toolkit. Especially useful when generating figures for stock prospectuses, annual reports, and financial documents that are distributed to non-financial senior management.

Murdoch's Constant (mC) = the number that when:

  • added to
  • subtracted from
  • multiplied by
  • divided into

the number you scientifically calculated will give you the number you were looking for.

Note: by default, starting value for mC =  the page number.  8)

Well, I've not really had the time quite yet to do my Aussie telco rant yet, but it's coming~! :P (There are quite a few things in there, so I've held off until I have time to roll in a few aspects.)

For now, you can find my regular rants here (I'm getting them up about 1x per day or so):

http://cynic.me/

The closest rant I have so far is "Police Send Negative Messages About Australians". Not telcos, but about billboards in Australia. :) I'm sure you'll be able to relate. (Short version: Public service ads are blatantly insulting.)

FYI: the U.S. Government has just classified Murdoch's Constant as Top Secret.

(Apparently there's a new round of homeland security spending budgets going before Congress very soon and they don't want to let the cat out of the bag about how they came up with the numbers...)  ;)

All kidding aside, one question I would very much like to see is: Do you sing or play a musical instrument?  :)

Good one. It would not surprise me if quite a few folks on here do. I play the guitar myself, but only as a hobby.

I am desperately hoping that cranioscopical is reading this thread, so we can discover if it's the kazoo or the zither that he plays. It simply has to be one or the other...  :D

I wouldn't be surprised if it were somewhere around 85% or better. There's a high correlation between musical talent and programming/system skills.

I'm betting on the Keilwerth Straight Alto Sax myself...

With graceful curve bananas grow,
Beelines always wander.
Directly rarely flies the crow,
And rural paths meander.

The goat's horn makes a graceful curve,
All hilltops undulate.
Appealing things in nature swerve,
- Should saxophones be straight?

That, or that percussion...er...thing Spike Jones used to play:

That would be a good poll.

And no... The blue vein piccolo doesn't count...

For me, guitar. I also play 1-handed keyboard. Badly.
