How to stop junk [snail] mail?
« on: December 21, 2009, 02:08 PM »
My mailbox is just filled with junk mail.  I'm sick of it.  How can I stop this?  I know some of you know the answer!

Here in Norway you can go to the post office and get some stickers for your mailbox with text like "junk mail not wanted" "No advertisements please" etc.

Check your local post office!

Interesting, I'll give that a shot.  Go Norwegians!

Same here in .dk - you fill out a form where you can tick off "I don't want advertisements" and "I don't want the free newspapers", which post.dk registers in it's Big Evil DatabaseTM, and then you get the stickers. The advantage of not just getting the stickers is you can save the poor postal workers from dragging shitloads of commercials to your postbox only to see the sticker...

Did you try Google first? ;) http://www.wikihow.c...Get-Rid-of-Junk-Mail

There was actually a great article on this a year or two back, but for the life of me I can't remember where it was from...

We would have put a notice on the letter box, but local kids get paid for delivery...

so we put the recycling bin next to the letter box and it's easy to deal with  :D

Wish we had a sticker system like that in the US. Unfortunately, our postal service is legally required to deliver all the mail it accepts to the addressee if humanly possible.

You could try using the Direct Marketing Association opt-out service (dmachoice.org).

I used it, and it did reduce much (but not all) of the junk I was getting.

Worth a try anyway.

You should be able to charge them fees for storage of the material until they come and collect it if you didn't request it.

You've got nothing to lose by sending off an invoice to one of the companies sending the sh!t to you - just make sure you've kept it all if they want it back :)

I usually just send company A's junk-mail to company B, in company C's self-addressed/stamped envelope.

This way I get to waste their time too ;)

Well it's been over a year now.  I thought I noticed a decrease in my junk mail from the suggestions here, but it's still a lot.  So is there a way to further reduce the amount of junk?  I just hate it so much.  What a tremendous waste of money and resources.  I wonder how much time and how many billions of dollars are wasted with this process:
Creation of junk mail
postage for junk mail
delivery of junk mail
disposal of junk mail

The whole thing is one huge waste.  It's environmentally bad, to boot.
