« on: November 07, 2009, 08:26 AM »
say IF I wanted to rename a bunch of pictures in a folder that my digital camera has named 0001.jpg etc to something more memorable like Frenchholiday.jpg   Is there a way to to that in farr, with or without plugin?

This is something a little bit outside the scope of what FARR does, and there is no plugin to do it.  You can use FARR to find the files you want to rename and then drag and drop them from within FARR to a proper free renaming tool (see thread here).  Personally i think this makes more sense than trying to build yet another renamer tool.

if you're trying to rename images taken with a digital camera then this thread might be of help as it emphasizes more on organizing the images.

Why is it so hard to find a decent image organizer?

Thanks for the reply and links to read. Yeah I suppose you can expect too much from a great program. I just thought someone might have found a way to work with a plugin.  I suppose though it would be better to find a good renaming tool and just use far to start it up.

Thanks but I am not replacing FARR!!!   I tried loads and like FARR the best. Blaze also requires you have NET Framework 3.5 installed, I dont like that.

@delwoode: You can get some good mass file renaming utilities as freeware or shareware.
For years now, I have used a mass file renaming facility built in to xplorer² file manager (zabkat.com). It is a major timesaver when renaming multiple files. There is a facility to insert variable names ("tokens") into the file name - e.g., sequenced numbering starting at "n".
Mass rename screenshot xplorer².jpg

The above screenshot is from my desktop, in the process of renaming a group of digital photo files named "SDCnnnnn" to "Antarctica $01.jpg" which gives them a sequential numbering starting at "01". I've clicked the "Preview" button, so that I can see what the filenames will look like before actually committing to those names. This is just one example of what you can do with this mass file renaming facility in xplorer². There's lots more clever stuff in there.

@delwoode: Came across this today - which could be useful: Rename Master

There's also quite a good clipboard utility there called ArsClip that I might mention in a Clipboard Help & Spell discussion.

Thanks for mentioning this!

(I did a search of the DC forums and noticed that it had been pointed out before -- but this was before my time here :) )

I've been using ReNamer happily, but Rename Master looks worth trying.
