How do I rotate a movie 90 degrees?
« on: October 07, 2009, 07:27 AM »
I have a digital camera that takes videos as well. I turned the camera from landscape to portrait to take a movie and now I want to rotate the movie so it replays right-side up instead of sideways. I've never paid attention enough to the various programs I have seen to know if any of them do this. Does anybody know of such a feature?

depending on the length of the clips, ZS4 Video Editor will come in handy. used them previously when i had the same problems with the digicam.

here is a blog post about the same topic, which uses the tool I would have recommended: http://www.hanselman...TakenInPortrait.aspx

You can do it using the free VirtualDub.

Barring rotating the monitor - which is lossless :)

Avidemux - Transform->Rotate filter

That triggers a memory.  One of those ideas I had but was in no position to implement.  Back in the day when large CRT monitors were very expensive, and some people used full page sized monitors to do desktop publishing or whatever, I thought, since a normal monitor is wider than it is tall, instead of having a humongous monitor, why not just have hw that rotated the output 90 degrees and have a stand with a hinge to tilt the monitor, the "width" becoming the "height."  Years later I saw one with that stand and hinge so I assume they also did the rotation in hardware.

Funny I totally forgot about that. :)

if you just want to view the movie without changing it - vlc player has a rotate setting
