I am currently developing a small app as a tray clock replacement, mainly because I want one too. I keep my taskbar hidden and needed something that is easy to read.

You can download a beta of my freeware clock at my site. Keep in mind it's a beta and I am still working on it. Keep checking back from time to time to get the latest version of it.

features currently include:

always on top
customizeable size
customizable colors
option to remove tray clock
stopwatch
countdown timer
hourly chime
ToDo List
small utility to aid in making alphabetical lists
display system uptime

I don't think Alfaclock has a free version...it "expires" after a certain amount of time and you can't open it after that.

"Alfaclock Free" v1.90 is promoted at www.alfaclock.com as "freeware", and I have seen no indication since installing it that it is going to expire. I really like it. It is reminiscent of tclock, but is more polished, and is designed for XP. I have not tried the same author's "Betaclock", formerly "Alfaclock 2"; it may have different licensing terms.

It does claim to be free and unlimited.

I don't think Alfaclock has a free version...it "expires" after a certain amount of time and you can't open it after that.

Interesting, it seems like Alfaclock has gone through some changes recently. Just a few weeks ago, it was selling it's Alfaclock "Classic" for some nominal fee (it was version 1.82). Now it looks like it's version 1.90 and called Alfaclock "Free". And the newer Alfaclock 2, which they were selling for $30, is now called "Betaclock" and is once again a free beta version, that I assume will periodically expire like the previous beta alfaclock. How interesting...

While trying to see if that link worked for me, I tried alfaclock, and it looks good! It's uses very little resources, makes his work very well, and is very easy to use.
I just wish it had better alarm clock functionalities, creating an alarm clock is too much work.

be careful,
I have been told by the original owner of Alfaclock that the www.alfasoftweb.com site is a rip-off and the Alfaclock2 they are selling is an illegal copy that is based on old beta code. Only use www.alfaclock.com or www.betaclock.com. BetaClock is the latest incarnation but I am currently using Alfaclock Free v1.90 and find it completely stable.

Ah! Thanks! I knew there was something weird about the whole thing. That's just wrong, some guy makes a good piece of software for free, and the thief wants $30 for the same thing, which is totally overpriced for just a clock replacement.

For those interested in analog clocks:

I used ClocX for several months with the tray clock hidden. It sat Always-On-Top in the lower-right corner, but allowed transparency on hover and could be clicked through. It also came with a huge variety of skins (my favorite was Cappuccino).

I craved a calendar, though, and thus switched just this past weekend to Analog Clock. It replaces the system tray clock and has a very responsive calendar on hover. The linked website also has good screenshots, something ClocX is lacking.

Both are good utilities and I urge you to try them.

One that I really like is ZoneTick. Very flexible/customizable but still easy to use. It's not free, but $25 for two licenses is not bad, IMO (I agree that many of the others are just too much). So far I like it better than any other that I have tried, especially since I need more than one because I work from home for a company overseas. The developer is also responsive, which is important to me. He's already implemented a few of my requests, which is great
