Help me build the ultimate metal playlist
« on: May 04, 2009, 06:14 PM »
To all, I am hoping there are some metalheads here. I am very into metal of all sorts. Death, Speed, Thrash, Heavy, Black...etc. I am trying to create the ultimate cd in two forms. One of them is a standard audio cd, 80 mins, for playback in my wife's old car stereo. The other will be an MP3 CD. Now please note, when it comes to metal, I prefer music that is heavy on the guitars, has either some very fast guitar playing to it, and a very loud vocal line.

Here is a list of "Must-Have's" on my soundtrack CD.

Rob Halford - Hells Last Survivor
Judas Priest - Metal Meltdown
Lizy Borden - Lord of the Flies
Metallica - That was just your life
Metallica - The thing that should not be
Metallica - Dyers Eve
Megadeth - Hangar 18
Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists

Now, not all of those are on the cd currently, but those are what I consider essentials to my library.

Any ideas? Thoughts? Quandries? Idiosyncratic concerns?

I'm a bit on the old-school side, but these were my favorites from 'back then'...

  • Iron Maiden - The Trooper,Run to the Hills
  • Testament - Curse of the Legions of Death
  • Death Angel - Kill as One,Thrashers
  • Metallica - Metal Militia (who am I kidding, just hit 'Random' from the first 3 albums)
  • Anthrax - Indians,Time
  • Stormtroopers of Death - Kill Yourself
  • Manowar - Blood of the King
  • Corrosion of Conformity - Damned for All Time
  • Trouble - Black Shapes of Doom

I know there'll be more, but I'll stop for now

It looks like you're an old-timer like me: NWOBHM into the thrash era, and nu-metal isn't invited to the party :) Here are some of my favorites fitting that bill (scanning into my MP3 player now):

  • Overkill - Skullcrusher (playing with spiders), In Union We Stand
  • Slayer - South of Heaven, Raining Blood
  • Annihilator - Alison Hell
  • Pantera - Mouth for War (assuming the groove metal isn't too new for you)
  • Savatage - Gutter Ballet
  • Helloween - I Want Out
  • Testament - Practice What You Preach
  • Anthrax - Madhouse
  • Dream Theater - Pull Me Under
  • Fates Warning - Silent Cries
  • Flotsam and Jetsam - Hard on You
  • Accept - Balls to the Wall
  • Queensryche - Queen of the Reich, London, Screaming in Digital, The Needle Lies, Suite Sister Mary ... most anything from the first 4 albums
  • Metallica - anything from the first 3, especially Master of Puppets, Creeping Death
  • Megadeth - Wake Up Dead, The Conjuring, In My Darkest Hour
  • Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand (I'm not kidding, listen and you'll see that it's the prototype for later thrash)

Some of these (Helloween, Savatage, Queensryche, Dream Theater) are a bit more of a prog metal or power metal sound than what you listed, but I think would fit well.

I didn't list anything from newer genres (e.g., Opeth, Evergrey, Dragonforce) because it doesn't seem to fit in as well.

You sir, are correct.

You've reminded me to dig a little further in the roots...

  • Black Sabbath - Mob Rules
  • Raven - Break the Chain
  • Talas - High Speed on Ice
  • Tank - Run Like Hell

I hope that does it...

Kreator -  Under The Guillotine, Flag Of Hate, Command Of The Blade, Awakening Of The Gods...and so many more
OverKill - There's No Tomorrow, Feel The Fire, Shred, Overkill III...so many more too

Heavy metal side of things:

Saxon - Lionheart and Inner Sanctum albums are excellent in my opinion

Lovin it!

I have added some marilyn manson to my playlist.

His version of sweet dreams is AWESOME, especially the live version. You can sample it with the attached file. Listening to him, along with most bands, live is something of a spiritual experience. Most bands perform so much better live (minus teenie bopper and boy bands). Check it out. I am also getting into a few bands: saxon, exodus and lamb of god, courtesy of itunes LIMITED heavy metal shop.

I am looking for a few good PURE SPEED songs. I want a song that when it comes on, you have to crank your radio up and just speed in your car. I find these songs very hard to find. A very good example would be Metallica's Whiplash or Priests' Jawbreaker. Anyone have any good ideas for this?

I am looking for a few good PURE SPEED songs.

I am going to sleep now but I can recommend "Manowar › Black Wind, Fire & Steel":
http://www.jango.com/music/Manowar?l=0

Hm, I don't know is it the kind of speed you like but it was always giving me furious pogo dance on concerts. I know there is a lot of stuff with more power but I've always hated songs which I couldn't understand because of growling, so they are nonexistent for me :)

For speedier metal you could try some songs from 'System of a Down'

Marylin Manson's "Slut garden" is a song with a nice ring to it  :-[ ...but it is far from speedy.

Ah well, more of a gothic fan myself (After Forever, NightWish etc.).

Come to think of it, the song "Transitory" from 'After Forever' is kinda speedy.

EDIT:
added song title.

Something speedy?

Nine Inch Nails: Broken: Wish. When that track comes on, you'll generally (irrespectively of the situation) see me jumping around yelling THIS IS THE FIRST DAY OF MY LAST DAYS!, headbanging, etc. Can't help it. The whole broken album is anger, rage and desperation distilled into one ~40min outburst. :-* :-* :-*

See if you can find Vader's Reign Forever World EP - We evoke dominion! We bring this world to it's knees!.

this isn't really my style of music but:
Hawkwind's Motorhead is pretty great and might qualify: http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=p6OuyJKnIyU

Speedy? OK.

  • Slayer - Reign In Blood (hit random)
  • Forced Entry - Anaconda
  • Excel - Message in a bottle (trust me, this cover rules)
  • Fishbone - Sunless Saturday
  • Everything I've already mentioned, except for Raven, Iron Maiden and Trouble.

this isn't really my style of music but:
Hawkwind's Motorhead is pretty great and might qualify: http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=p6OuyJKnIyU

Aw man, Mouser you are going back...
For history's sake then, add these three:
  • Queen - Sheer Heart Attack (Metallica's cover was good, NIN's remix was mind-boggling, but the original is madness...)
  • Deep Purple - Highway Star
  • Uriah Heep - Easy Livin'

This is sort of off-topic but too cool not to post.
Here is Judas Priest doing an amazing cover of Joan Baez's folk song Diamonds and Rust (about Bob Dylan) from 1978:

If you're looking for speed...

+1 for Metallica's cover of Sheer Heart Attack. I recall learning to play this from tablature in Guitar magazine. Usually they specify the speed in terms of beats per minute; in this case it just said "as fast as possible".

Also, see:
  • Anthrax - Got the Time
  • Overkill - Fast Junkie, Elimination, Birth of Tension
(obviously I've got a thing for Overkill)

Well, System Of A Down is nu-metal, so it sorta qualifies... and if you put oldsk00l snobbery aside, they've actually made a couple of OK tracks. I wouldn't call anything Manson has made metal (portrait of an american family is more punkish than it's metal), but imho a lot of his tracks fit decently in a metal playlist (if you're not going for purist :)). As for NIN, well, Reznor has varied his style quite a bit across his albums. Broken fits perfectly in an aggressive metal playlist.

For some brutal stuff, check out DIE and Dawn Of Demise - those are guaranteed \m/etal, with a vengeance and all. Disclaimer: I know some of the guys from those two bands, so you could see this as a blatant ad :P

Oh, and while it doesn't really belong in an "ultimate metal playlist" (we've already drifted a bit OT), you might want to check out volbeat. It's in the softer end, more rock than metal really... although I suppose you could invent a genre called Elvis-metal for them :)

Correction: Metallica and NIN did covers of Stone Cold Crazy, not Sheer Heart Attack, what was I thinking?

You guys put System Of A Down, Marylin Manson and Nine Inch Nails in a metal play list? :P

Well, since we're on the topic...  :-[
CAUTION: Industrial Area Ahead
  • Ministry - Thieves, Burning Inside, Stigmata
  • 1000 Homo DJ's - Supernaut

As for speedy, How could I forget these two? They always made me want to go 90mph in a school zone:
  • Ministry - Jesus Built My Hotrod
  • Atari Teenage Riot - Speed

I am not a big fan of the genre, but one metal-head friend of mine just loves Twisted Sister.  Since I don't see it on the list, maybe they aren't around anymore, but something you might want to look into none-the-less.

I have kind of moved on from anything that might be considered metal, with the exception of some progressive symphonic metal like Shadow Gallery or Enchant.

But some stuff in my collection that I used to listen to a lot, before my taste really started changing...

Ария - Воля и Разум (this may be very hard to find)

The band is also known as "Aria" or "Ariya", and the song could be called "Volya I Razum" or "Volia I Razum" or "Volja I Razum" (translates to "Will and Reason").

Translation of the lyrics can be found at the bottom of this page.

This is from one of the oldest and greatest Russian metal bands. They have been around since the 80's, and still recording & touring. Their style is classic metal, NWOBHM. This song is from their 2nd album, from 1986, called "С Кем Ты?" (Who are you with?).

Their stuff is getting easier to find, though, and now it is possible you can find their stuff for sale on sites that are actually in English and accept American currency (1 "best of" album left at amazon.com) This is not something that was possible 6-7 years ago, when I first discovered their music. Thanks to the internet, they are gaining a new worldwide fame. Unfortunately, that also means they aren't giving the full song mp3 away on their website any more.

Some other stuff worth considering:

Crossbreed - Release Me
Crossbreed - Pure Energy
Disturbed - Stupify
Disturbed - Down With the Sickness
Disturbed - Shout 2000
Drowning Pool - Bodies
Godsmack - I Stand Alone
Puddle of Mudd - Control
Snake River Conspiracy - Homicide (it's nothing like their other stuff)
Static X - Black and White
Static X - Push It

and just about anything by Yngwie Malmsteen (including his neo-classical metal stuff), although I don't think you can go flying down the highway to his stuff. More like slam on the breaks, and then just sit there all bug-eyed, jaw dropped, & shaking, with your heart racing. It's like being hit with a stun gun.   :o

You need more Disturbed songs :P Specifically I'd add

  • Criminal
  • Facade
  • Deify

to the tracks already mentioned.

APP!! Eastern Bloc metal FTW!!

If you're into that, you may like Acid Drinkers.
They're from Poland and have been around since 1986.
They're all at once heavy, amazing and funny. Heavy obviously. Amazing because they really are good musicians. Funny because they sing in English which produces some unintended hilarity, and they have the good sense not to take themselves too seriously.

I discovered them when a Polish lady I worked with unintentionally bought a bunch of their tapes from a shady street vendor on a trip back home. Needless to say, it was not what she expected   :o so she brought them to work to see if anybody wanted them. :D

Back around 2004, I had a chatroom on a network that contained an abundance of Japanese channels, that all appeared at the bottom of the channel list. My channel was located at the very bottom, after all of those. This was deliberate, so mine would be at the top if you flipped the list (made it easier to find). Unlike everyone else in the English speaking world on that network, I wasn't going to compete with them to be at the top of the channel list.

Being at the bottom of the list meant seeing a lot of Japanese channels on the list every day. One day, one of them caught my eye, mainly because its topic was in English: Japanese Progressive Rock and Metal (ENGLISH ONLY IN HERE)

Curious, I decided to check it out. It was hosted by a 16 year old Japanese girl with very good English skills, that was more than thrilled to have an articulate native English speaker to talk to (rather than someone that communicates in AOL kiddie-speak), and she was quite eager to spread and share what she felt was the best metal music her country had to offer.

She sent me 3 files:

The first one, I deleted it as soon as I heard the vocals, since I can't handle anything that sounds like growling in English, nevermind in Japanese.

The 2nd one, the vocals sounded like a whiny high pitched very feminine guy. Deleted that one too.

But the 3rd one was these guys. I kept that one.  ;)

Oh, how could I forget?

Saturnus - Christ Goodbye. Great stuff, although I prefer the Roskilde Festival live version from "For The Loveless Lonely Nights", it's a bit more uptempo.

I'm surprised Pantera only came up once. Cemetary Gates, or Cowboys from Hell maybe ... A must in my playlist :)

There's something about Mudvayne's - World So Cold also that I can't get enough of, or else maybe some of their earlier stuff like Dig if you wanted only the heavy stuff.

Just finished reading "The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists". Highly recommended.

I got some nostalgia from it, as well as some more depth on some music I was only partially familiar with, and some other stuff that was new to me (e.g. Ron Jarzombek in Blotted Science).
