The Hunt For Gollum - 40 Min. Fan-Made Movie
« on: May 02, 2009, 05:25 PM »
The Hunt For Gollum, a 40 minute Lord of the Rings inspired, fan-made film will be publicly released online for free tomorrow (3rd May) for the enjoyment of fans. I have to say the trailers (see below) look utterly riveting, I hope it's out before I go to bed tonight!!

The story follows the Heir of Isildur; the "greatest huntsman and traveller in Middle Earth" as he sets out to find the creature Gollum. The creature must be found to discover the truth about the Ring, and to protect the future Ringbearer.

Huh?

It's a prequel to LOTR, following The Hobbit near as I can tell. It's not a spoof, which I think is what you're asking.

Interesting. When I click the URL it pops up Firefox's download window as if it were trying to download something.

Anybody got a working link to the video now that it's May 3rd?

EDIT: This one works for me:

Having only seen the video and not read anything else about it, I'd have to say it's pretty good, especially for what I am assuming is "fan-fiction" about Gollum.

Nicely done.

Oh well, I saw it. And I most say. It's a brilliant effort they have put into this movie. I really enjoyed viewing it

For those of you who aren't interested in watching it from your browser (it's a bit lame...), here are some direct download URLs:

80x60
320x240
512x384
848x480
1280x720

VLC is capable of playing each of these.

Sorry, fixed my post. It's just an alternate name for FLV apparently. Same codec and whatnot.

Those links don't seem to work here. Perhaps the "&key=blabla" part is bound to cookies, session, ip or something?

Looks like they've taken down the HD version, I can't get it from anywhere. LAME!!

It's available on torrent sites in FLV and AVI, guess you'll have to try it there.

Sorry E. Just me being crotchety. :)

Visuals were nice, and bits of it were good, but I just didn't care for it overall. I felt the screenplay was lacking, even if the CG work was impressive. Amazing length for a fan piece however! Most of these things only run about 3 minutes.

On a positive note, these folks didn't mangle any elements in the original story. Which is more than I can say for Walsh, Boyens, and Jackson. (I'm still irked by what they did to several key plot points and story elements in the New Line Cinema release - and I don't buy their reasons for why they believed such changes were necessary. >:( )

P.S. This link seems to work just fine: http://www.dailymotion.com/huntforgollum

This HD link works:

http://www.dailymoti...d-version_shortfilms

If you're using Firefox, Download Helper and FlashGot add-ons also seem to work with this link if you wanted to grab all 289MBs of it.

Don't know how you managed top get your hands on the 1280x720 version Hertz Man, but congrats. I got ahold of the 512x384 version here.

I also was very pleased with the story. I thought everything except the sound was excellent, for what it was. I didn't go into expecting it to be of LOTR proportions, but I'm certainly glad to have seen it. The sound really needs to be normalized, it hurt my ears in parts, and I wanted it to be louder than max in others.

Don't worry about being crotchety Hertz Man, we all have those days :)

Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way - people usually try to tell me off with "a movie adaptation can't follow the book by the letter", "you're just grumpy" et cetera. Well, sure, I didn't expect a by-the-letter adaptation (duh!), but some of the changes are just... reason enough to plant an axe somewhere fleshy.

I had that same problem, and didn't even realize it until my wife told me that she and the kids could hear it upstairs, and that it sounded like thunder at times...

I'll wait until they release a proper version via bittorrent. Flash usually gives me problems with synchronization of audio and video. I want to watch it with my most favorite, reliable media player and not with the my most disliked, proprietary browser plug-in...

The releases I found were re-encodes of the flash version.

Here's to hoping The Hunt for Gollum won't be treated like Damnatus...

That was the best fan film I've ever seen (not counting the professional fan films in Be Kind Rewind :P ). Awesome work by all the people involved!
