Eggnog season is upon us!

One of my favorite things about this time of year is the singular fact that the stores start stocking that creamy, sweet, spicy artery-clogging, coma-inducing confection known 'round the world as Eggnog.

I realize that not everybody likes the stuff, but I love it.
Only for the season though, because it tends to make a whale of me :P

It's not even November yet.
* f0dder goes into xmas-depression mode.

Don't think I've ever seen anybody in .dk drink eggnog (and certainly haven't found ready-made bottled brands anywhere). The traditional Danish (perhaps even Scandinavian?) xmas-drink would be Glögg :)

I've seen that stuff sold in Ikea's kitchen & food section. Always wanted to try it, never got around to it.
What's it like?

Some like it, some love it, some absolutely hate it :)

Usually the Glögg you buy has a very low (if any at all? been a while) alcohol content, and isn't really suitable for drinking as-is. Not sure it's meant to be, anyway. So you heat it, mix with red wine, raisins and almonds. Works pretty well on a cold Scandinavian winter day. Spicy stuff.

I've also seen people making summer drinks from it, serving cold and mixed with white whine instead.

ahh, Glühwein - I haven't seen it with fruit & nut. Very popular here in the evenings at the outdoor christmas markets.
Apparently it used be made (in England at any rate) by sticking a hot poker from the fire into your glass of wine and throw in a couple of spices - but that could be a myth of course :)

They've had the christmas stuff in the shops here for weeks now .. got a right shock seeing all these Lebkuchen and Stollen in SEPTEMBER :huh:

Eggnog I've only had once or twice, with alcohol it was nice - ish :D

A few years ago my mother bought some Eggnog for the Christmas season. She liked it so much that she just kept buying it until it was out of season and no longer sold. So she started buying chocolate milk instead.

For about three years after that there was always eggnog or chocolate milk in the refrigerator, depending on the season.

Since I don't drink, I prefer it straight outta the fridge, poured into a glass.
I have heard that drinking it warm is better with the liquor.

Thanks! I've added my vote: Doesn't matter, drink up!

I don't really drink, either (I'll have, at most A beer or A glass of wine when socializing). Blame a misspent youth (as in, I got drinking out of my system a long time ago). I've not heard of drinking eggnog and rum warm - I'll give it a shot (no pun intended) this festive season  :Thmbsup:

f0dder: Do you have a good Glögg recipe you'd care to share with us. I notice you're from Denmark, so I'd guess you're better qualified to talk about Glögg then most.

Edvard: I'm with you 100% on the whole eggnog thing. I'll take it any way I get it, although someone did me up a mug of it last Christmas with a splash of Southern Comfort that I thought was quite good. It also made me happy somebody finally found something that Southern Comfort was actually good for. (I'm joking! sorta...  ;))

I'd also like to toss in a vote for apple cider as another good thing that comes with the autumn season. I'm in New England, so this time of year is noted for the arrival of gallons and gallons of superb (locally produced) cider. Good hot or cold - and with or without a splash of "Dutch courage."

Remember visiting people once who made mulled cider with cinnamon sticks & cloves and god knows what else - it was good
Funny, with all that (american) cider in New England, that they never got into producing the alcoholic variety.
Was just reading lately that the first Puritans who landed in New England brought thousands of gallons of beer so we cant blame the Puritans (mind you, in fairness, in those days water wasnt safe to drink unless taken directly from a spring or well so beer was a convenient solution :).

Snakebite?

Afaik that was banned in several places in the UK because people couldn't handle it.

Oh, when I ordered a snakebite at some pub here in �rhus some months ago, the Strongbow cider wasn't mixed with Guinness (which would've been nice, I bet) but with something blackcurrant-ish. Absolute awful :( - fortunately a girl friend of mine didn't like her Hobgoblin, so we traded and everybody ended up happy.

but maybe that was the name I was thinking of all the same
It is/was popular to add a dash of the ("Absolute awful") blackcurrant cordial to the mix but usually only on demand ...

I didnt actually like cider & guinness mixed myself but tastes a lot better than a Snakebite imo!

Probably because nobody felt like waiting for apple season when all they wanted a good stiff drink. Hardening cider isn't very difficult. If you let it sit a bit under the right conditions it happens. Problem is (at least in my house) that a gallon of cider doesn't get to live long enough to harden. It's usually gone by the end of the same day I bring it home. ;D

If you do want hard cider, I've found Hard Core Crisp Hard Cider to be very good - although I'd prefer the carbonation to be a little softer before I gave it 5-stars.

And Snakebite? Bah! An imposter!! Even its silly name gives it away!!!

If you're ever in New Hampshire, hie thee over to the Woodstock Inn Brewery on Main Street in North Woodstock and order yourself a round of their Autumn Ale Brew.

The brewery offers reasonable prices, excellent food, and a great crowd. And there really is an inn there! Very handy come some fine fall evening when you've had a little too much Autumn Ale, or not enough privacy to get 'better acquainted' with that 'certain someone' you met in the crowd...

Black satin.
Some used to refer to it as Black Velvet, which is really G & champagne.
Good luck finding champagne in some of my old haunts, or Guinness in others, depending on which part of town  :)

I like it's taste - just wish it didn't carry the import beer premium though, because it's not that special. Problem is that the major Danish beer brands are pretty boring (and I pity the fools paying import premium for Carlsberg og Tuborg :o ). One of my favourites that I don't mind paying a bit extra for would be draught Double Chocolate Stout (I think from Young?) - that's seriously tasty stuff. And I usually don't fancy stouts :)

tomos: yes I did look at the hob-gob link. It is a terrific label! Reflects my attitude towards lager quite nicely, to wit: Lager's fine for when you're mowing a lawn on a hot summer day and iced tea would be a little too strong.

I have been told there are those who would disagree... ;)

Personally, I just tend to head for another world voluntarily, no help from the friendly smiling steroid-pumping baldguys in the doorway 8)
