Newsletter for August 28th, 2008
Codename "Dizzying Discounts"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read our BLOG"
(new rss feed with images)

1. Newsletter Editorial

Darwin here, warming the captain's chair for mouser.  August has been a busy month on every level - personal, local, national, and international (heck, it was even a busy month cosmologically - the Perseids were active from July 17 to August 24).  But thankfully this newsletter is coming out on time finally so we only have to look back at the last two weeks.  As August grinds to a close, let's all take a look back at what's new on the Donationcoder boards since the last newsletter.

2. Official Announcements

As August ends, so does the huge 40% discount on the newly released Beyond Compare version 3!  This program is a favorite of many forum members including mouser -- who even wrote a giant review of version 2 and its competition way back in 2005.  Also ending is the discount on JungleDisk, a very cool program reviewed by DC Member Justice in June 2008.

The discounts only run for another 2 days so if you haven't taken advantage of the discounts you have to act fast.  As always, we make no commissions from the sales but you do have to be a supporting or honorary member of the site (remember that you can become a supporting member with a donation of any amount).

Copies of both applications were also featured in this month's giveaway. See the link below to read about the winners and thanks to DC Member Carl Thorpe for arranging the discounts and giveaway.

3. Your Participation Requested:

We'd like to welcome everyone who's joined over the past couple of weeks. If you're new here and haven't yet joined in any of the conversations, don't be shy! Below are a couple of conversations that we'd love to have your participation in.

4. Help and Advice Wanted:

If you're trying to make a decision about anything software or hardware related, the DC forum is a great place to turn. A quick search of the forum might provide you with an answer - if it doesn't post, your question - there's always someone who will drop by to give you a hand!

5. Fun And Games

There's more to DC than coding and the serious discussion of hardware and software. Check out the links below for some lighter fare - everything from games to funny video clips.

6. The Weird Wide Web

Donationcoders are a generous lot, always ready to share their latest discoveries from the far flung corners of the web. Here are some highlights (in case you missed them!):

7. General Software Discussion

Of course, software is a big part of DC and discussions about various applications and classes of software dominate the boards. Here are some recent postings of interest:

8. Mini-Reviews by Members

We LOVE to see reviews on DC. Take some inspiration from these reviews posted since the last newsletter. First up is Tom, who treats us to a mini-review of a vertical mouse - a beastie I had no idea existed until I read the review! New member Shook jumps right in with a mini-review of AudioSurf, a game that adjusts its speed and the play to whatever music you play through it. Thus it will appeal to everyone from "headbangers to Mozart fans", to quote Shook!

9. Coding Snacks and DC Software

This section of the newsletter highlights posts pulled from a number of boards that focus on software created by DC members. If you're new to DC, these boards are a great place to go if you're looking for something to enhance your workflow and you just can't find it. Post a clear and polite request and a DC member might just code it for you. Check out garbanzo's request for a customizable unicode character paster for an example.

10. Developer's Corner

The developer's Corner is more than you might think! Drop by and you'll find everything from in-depth discussions of programming languages to threads dealing with entrepreneurial issues. Despite what you might think, there probably IS something here for you.

Thanks for taking the time to do this, Darwin!

It makes a good springboard from which to launch an exploration of DC.

Thanks Darwin.  I use the newsletter as a 'what's new' to skim over topics.

Having tried to learn VB once, I am in awe of some of you guys who seem to write code like I write posts.
Yeah, trees don't grow on money either.
