LifeHacker vote, stage 2, final voting
« on: May 22, 2008, 12:21 PM »
(Sorry about spamming but I feel it is rather important and it would be more missed if merged to the first thread, not to mention it is a different vote)

Vote here:
http://lifehacker.co...pplication-launchers

FARR is kind of an underdog, but hey, we got to the finals :). On the windows front there is only Launchy, RocketDock and FARR.
So before anyone gets any kind of negative feeling about vote results, it is rather important to remember how many launchers there are for Windows - FARR is in the in the top 3.

The final article is up so this is probably irrelevant at this point.. All the people who did vote for FARR had an an impact and brought FARR to light for a lot of people.  I'll make a separate post on the lifehacker article.

Grrrrr... I really wonder why the heck all these other launchers get so many votes. It shouldn't be called "best application launchers", but "favorite application launchers"... this pole is not about being the best in class, but just about preference and appearance.

I've never seen a really objective and careful side by side comparison of any of these apps. No doubt, if one day a real comparison was done, things would appear differently.

I think the number of votes for FARR is pretty good, given its lower profile. And the profile should have been raised by being in it. I would have thought that LH readers would get more use out of FARR than Launchy - but what do I know since I use neither regularly?

It's hardly a sensible poll either - after all what do votes for Quicksilver (Mac) and Gnome Do (Linux) actually mean, application or OS?

I'm not voting, though I use RocketDock. I prefer to use a mouse rather than a keyboard and it's the only option I have on the list. AFAIK, the only real alternative is Stardock - so that would be the comparison for me.

As far as I can see, it is a methodology (LH's 5 choice polls) being used to proselitise launcher apps. And without consideration of all the possibilites of using OS features to achieve the same end.

all these "best ....." polls are inappropriate. Like I said in my "unposted" comment there (at LH), the polls should be renamed and called : "most popular ....", and the  question should be : "what is your favorite .....".  That 3% only shows that farr could reach more people than it does right now. How? I don't know...  Maybe with more eye candy. It's definitely got potential for reaching a wider audience. IMO, it's not that hard to use!!! My feeling is that the article will give farr more visibility.

I would bet $1 million that all the people voting for Gnome Do or Quicksilver haven't tried those programs at least once, and such they're voting for the fame they have, how cool they look or how nice everything sounds from the feature lists. Oh well, these popularity contests, it's like the high school again (in teenager movies, that is, not IRL).

Unfortunately, I don't even have $100 at the moment, so if you excuse me...

Given than 24.6% vote for Quicksilver and that lifehacker public stats show that only 14% of users use mac os... Either they are more motivated to vote, or some Windows user vote Quicksilver, which is silly :)

Voted. One thing that strikes me about FARR is that I in no way feel even remotely interested in what other launchers have to offer.

Agree on the "Top, Best, etc." stuff already said, btw.

Good point, so maybe a new name for FARR could be Sexylaunch, Toplauncher or Bestrunner?  :P

I always liked sexy: as it seemed to encapsulate Form, Function & Fruitfulness, which is just the best description for any type of productive pursuit.

Personally, I think the name is a bit off-putting for some people.  It sounds too geeky for the average user.

My view though, is the only reason FARR isn't annihilating the rest of them in that poll is most of those people have never even tried it.  Those other launchers are barely a pimple of FARR's butt.  Well, if FARR had a butt.  Its 10x the launcher the best of them are.  And, I posted as much in response.  Well, after voting that is. haha.

This is a good point by Armando:
That 3% only shows that farr could reach more people than it does right now.

But you know the bottom line is that the goal is not to make FARR the most popular launcher, so i don't think any of this really matters.  The important thing is to make it great.

:)

You know, one of the things I am really proud of about DonationCoder software, whether written by me or skrommel, or others, is that work on the programs has always been driven by a desire to make the programs better for the existing users, instead of focusing on adding stuff that would bring in more users.  And it's always been a two-way street -- the users are always thinking up new cool ideas that make the programs better.

Guys, you have to simplify: SexyBot. It's simple, catchy, and mouser can remove a letter and sold it as completely different thing, opening a new market ;D

Screenshot of the new interface :D

RocketDock may be a great program but it really is a totally different kind of program than the others and is out of place in this list in my opinion.
