Lets get organized so we can get gaming!
« on: February 14, 2008, 07:01 PM »
OK, thanks to some help from wordzilla, I was able to locate many fellow gamers here at DC. Unfortunately, we have not setup a good system in order to cooperate and whatnot (Hamachi was good, don't get me wrong, but there is room for improvement).

In my spare time, if I am not coding, I play games. Lots of games. 50+ GB of games. But no one here has any of the games I have (and vice versa). What we need to do is make sure everyone has the same games so that we can all play.

Solution: Use Xfire to make a DC Gamer clan and utilize that to converse. "Xfire" is basically MSN/AIM (whatever you choose to think of) with voice chat, in-game instant messaging (no alt-tab :D), and one-click-game-join (if I am in a Halo game, and Deozaan wants in, he can just IM me and let me know, then click a button and be in my game in seconds).

Obviously, this is an improvement over the tedious setup and working of Hamachi. Hamachi is only good, IMO, for setting up virtual LAN games (that is good, but why not play a clan game vs other people around the world?).

You can catch a copy of Xfire here (freeware): http://www.xfire.com/ - Just download it, and it will help you sign up when it launches.

To get things going on making sure everyone has some games in common, here is my current list...

I'm on xfire under a couple of names:

I'm a member of three guilds on there...

I play a few games:
  • world of warcraft - khadgar server
  • everquest 2 - unrest and everfrost
  • lord of the rings - elendril
  • counterstrike: source
  • team fortress 2
  • call of duty 4
  • sins of a solar empire
  • enemy territory: quake wars
  • battlefield 2

I'm also on xbox live- gamertag hachibushu

Games for that include:
  • shadowrun
  • gears of war
  • carcassone
  • catan
  • speedball 2
  • guitar hero 3
  • virtua fighter 5
  • rock band

I'm usually on one platform or the other at night from about 10P - 1A EST (sometimes earlier, sometimes later, sometimes not at all)

Ah, yes - I have a LIVE gamertag as well (silver, I cant afford Gold :P)

I only use it for Halo 2, seeing as I don't own a 360 (but it's still useful for chat and whatnot)

hmm i am interested. let mew see if i can find my xfire info again.
When I have a mission, it consumes me; I will not be satisfied until the job is done. I have a strong sense of duty, and a strong sense of direction. Changes in the tide don't phase me - I always know which way the wind blows, and I know how to compensate for it. I get on poorly with people like myself.

I've been an xfire member for some time now, but i hate it. It just doesn't offer any advantages over steam (since i only play with friends that have steam), and i fing it very anoying. http://profile.xfire.com/jgpaiva

I find that it does offer advantages over steam, in that it keeps track of what I'm playing.  It also supports more games, especially non Steam-Powered ones.  There's relatively few games on Steam, which is the reason that I prefer a solution that isn't tied to a distribution network.

Why such hate for xfire... it does one thing, and it seems to do it well?

The thing is: i only play steam games :)

Also, i play very rarelly, having xfire's process always running doesn't make sense (and iirc it isn't that light).

Well, that makes sense... but *hate* usually implies something inherently wrong with the software which is why I was wondering...

jgpaiva, I have to ask - how does Xfire not have any advantages over Steam?

Xfire now has support for in-game Video recording (BETA, but still, no more needing Fraps :)), along with the usual screenshot uploading and built in voice chat options. And I don't see the problem with it using 10,312kb of RAM (I just checked) and 0% CPU. :tellme:

I never tried Steam, but I have multiple friends that use it as their primary gaming "headquarters" (if you will) and they refuse to switch to (or try) Xfire for some odd reason. I don't see why- the constant updates add more stuff all the time, and it is good as long as you aren't on dialup (my friend Walt no longer uses Xfire because of the 3+MB updates every month or so annoyed him, but 28.8k isn't exactly mainstream anymore). ;D

And thanks for posting the various profiles Deozann, helps to get a network going

wreckedcarzz: It's not a matter of being better or not. (to be fair, it's basically the same) The thing is that i have no need for xfire, i'd just be repeating steam's functions. Also, to be honest, i don't quite like xfire's looks, find it a bit confusing.

Okay, so I have to admit, back in 2006 when I installed Xfire the first time, I wasn't very pleased with it. It seemed big, obtrusive, and redundant, since the only reason I installed it was at the behest of my friend, who I already IMed with using other IM programs.

But now that I actually know a few people who play games, I'm not too bothered by Xfire anymore. It's nice to see what your friends are doing, the voice chat is fairly straightforward and works well, and chatting within the game works nicely too. I'm not too pleased with the shortcut (scroll lock + x) because I don't like it turning on my keyboard lights, but it's not so bad.

Anyway, it's not so bad as I initially deemed it to be.

Alas, 95% of my gaming is console gaming . . .

I love Test Drive Unlimited, but play it on my Xbox 360 not PC -- I'm pretty sure the online functions of the two are completely separate.

Feel free to add my gamertag (My virtually empty friends list could use some improving upon!)

Yeah, it's still rare to see the merging of PC/console online. The only game I can think of that does it is Final Fantasy XI, though I'm sure there are some others.

I added your Xbox Live Gamertag thingy to the list. :-D

Yea, they are seperate. There are several games coming out for Xbox live now that are said to be PC-Xbox compatable (Halo 2 was supposed to be, but it was canceled at the last minute). But I don't know how well that will go over...

<offtopic> Test Drive Unlimited can get quite addicting, can't it? ;D </offtopic>

Alright, for anyone that uses Xfire (I have this list of people - Xfire USERNAMES, not nicknames: hachibushu, Deozaan, wraith808, p3lb0x, jgpaiva), you are being sent invites for a DC team on Xfire (keeps everyone in the team in a seperate group, and makes communication easier).

The Team page is here: http://www.xfire.com...clans/donationcoder/ if you want to check it out.

Invite people and spread the word! :)

Maybe I should revise my Game Maker Pro license (re-install) and attempt to get that online multiplayer working in Maze Craze? :)
