Anyone Getting a Spamalanche Lately?
« on: January 27, 2008, 10:00 PM »
I've been getting a LOT more spam in the last few days... Anyone else?

I think this may be related to that new remote Windows exploit... but that's just a guess...

I have noticed that - my spam folder in fastmail has just gone from 100 or so a day to 700 a day.

Yes - I too have noticed a real spike in the amount of spam that I've been receiving lately  >:( I had put it down to letting a teenager "check her e-mail" and finding that she'd been on some Korean social networking site as well. Looks like it's part of an overall pattern, though...

Ok -- the timing for this is just too much...

There has to be a million new zombies out there thanks to that TCP/IP stack problem. :(

My spam amounts seem to be about the same.

I use Gmail.

My spam hasn't got any worse (probably about 400 a day) - but to be honest I hardly notice it now as I am beginning to take the view I that if I lose the odd email in the spam folder they will contact me some other way if it was important and so I just block delete everything POPfile thinks is spam (and having checked it for weeks it seems to be pretty near to 100% accurate).

Well, I received a message from PayPal telling me to reactivate my account. I provided my details, including the password, and credit card information, and now everything works as before.

As always, the occasional spam message for Viagra and enlargements, but on the rest of my accounts, everything was clean, including Hotmail, which always gets something once in a while (all my fault, providing e-mail addresses in the wild :()

what TCP/IP stack problem?

I heard about an exploit for the Windows 2000/XP TCP/IP stack (Security Now). Vista is supposed to be vulnerable as well as it shares the same code.

Pretty much every time I hear about a serious exploit, I find that I get a lot more spam very shortly thereafter:

Reference (Jan. 10, 2008):

STEVE:  Okay.  Now, okay.  The takeaway message is absolutely everyone needs to run Windows Update.  Last Tuesday was the second Tuesday of the year.  Since the first Tuesday, of course, was January 1st, it was January 8 was the so-called "Patch Tuesday," when Microsoft releases their security updates.  This week we had a doozy.  It turns out that private parties informed Microsoft of a very low-level buffer overflow which permits remote code execution in the Windows TCP/IP stack itself.  So, and this is...

LEO:  Oh, is it the new stack that they wrote, or is this the old stack?

STEVE:  Well, this is XP's stack.  And it's believed that there is a problem in Windows 2000 as well.  So this has been around for a long time.  What makes this specifically bad is this is down - it's in what's called the IGMP, the Internet Group Management Protocol.  That's a multicast protocol.  And but the point is, this is not like a service running with an open port where the service has the problem.  This is the core of the stack itself.
